Thejokes work ondifferent levels, so itwill appeal indifferent ways toparents. In my daysas a dame, therewere things thatwould fly over the kids’ heads. I once had an experiencewhere some parents came to the dressing room after I’d takenmy make-up off and they said their little girl would like tomeet me. So I went out and the little girl was crying, saying,‘No, no, I want to see the lady not the man!’ and I had to goback and put my make-up back on. She loved it and themagic was definitely there. What you must never destroy isthat magic, like buying into the fairy tale and carrying on theillusion for the adults too. Next time you head to a panto, look how many people are joining in with the ‘he’s behindyou’ shouts, it’s everyone! It transports people back and it’swonderful to see that.Catch Aladdin at the Plowright Theatre from 8thDecember to 6th January. Visitwww.scunthorpetheatres.co.uk for more information orwww.tonypeers.co.uk.38 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCHRISTMAS - PANTOMIMESHi Tony, what can we expect this year? You can expect all the mirth and mayhem that pantomimesusually produce, but we’ve got a guy called Darren Johnsonwho is probably as good a dame as I’ve ever seen! Apantomime and Christmas goes together, doesn’t it? Theexample I always give is Christmas and turkey - nobody ordersturkey in a restaurant, but come Christmas, everyone wants aturkey, it’s the same with a pantomime. You have your mincepies and you go to a pantomime, it’s traditional. What do you think keeps people coming back year afteryear to the pantomime?Darren is a true traditional pantomime dame, some peopleare dismissive of panto, people like The X Factor sneer at it,but I would argue that it is an important piece of culture andart in this country. It has all the elements of any show, it hassinging, dancing, comedy, costumes and scenery and theimportant thing it has is we get to go across the fourth walland touch the audience. To watch a great panto performer likeDarren is quite a thing to see. It’s probably the last bastion ofshows where the whole family from tiny tots to grandmas canparticipate. It’s where the whole family can get together. Do you think the traditional panto will ever change? You can change what is essentially a repeat every time. Youcan make the gags and references up to date. The basic storyis always: boy meets girl, girl and boy fall in love and an evilperson tries to stop it, but it’s how you get there. We dothings with technical elements like lighting that we neverused to be able to do. We used to have microphone leadstrailing all over the place but not now, it’s very technical. There’snothinglike adameTony Peers has done it all. He’s been an actor, comedianand radio star, but interestingly has also been a leadingpantomime dame. We asked him what makes the pantosuch an enduring British phenomenon. This year’s pantomime at the Plowright Theatre,Scunthorpe is Aladdin and Tony is producing it, the fifthyear he has produced the theatre’s show.Tony PeersNext time you head toa panto, look howmany people arejoining in with the‘he’s behind you’shouts, it’s everyone!“038-039:Layout 1 8/10/12 11:59 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY39CHRISTMAS - PANTOMIMESKim set torimsby Auditorium’s pantomime is set to sparkle thisyear with a spick and span star as the WickedStepmother!Kim Woodburn, the ‘Queen of Clean’, is ready tosparkle as the Wicked Stepmother in this year’s pantomimeCinderella at the Grimsby Auditorium from Friday 7th toWednesday 26th December.
