Displayed behindglass for protection you can see why theymight command such respect and prices.Made by turning wood on a special latheand then ‘pierced’ with tools originallyintended for jewellers and dentists, Joeycreates a style that many will not havecome across before. Ornate and intricate, each piece seems a unique diorama oforganic form and interest. Having started the craft when her sonwas born, Joey turned a hobby into avocation over time. She has a slew ofhonours and titles, including some withlofty origins. In 2002 she was acceptedonto the Register of Professional Turners, which is supported by the WorshipfulCompany of Turners of London, and in2005 was awarded the company bursary. The bursary allowed her to study inAmerica, where turned wood is prized ascollectable art. Inspiration grew as shespent time with Binh Pho with whom shelearned to refine her traditional methodsand to add new, innovative techniques:piercing, colour and texture. In 2008, Joey was chosen to show herwork in the exhibition Wizards in Woodalongside Stuart Mortimer, presented bythe Worshipful Company of Turners inassociation with the Crafts Council’sCollectexhibition, at LINLEY Mayfair. Itwas the first major exhibition of turnedwood art in the UK.She has gone on to exhibit and sell herJoey Richardson produces some of the most eye-catching artwe’ve seen in a while. But why is wood-turning such a rare artform in the country? We pay her a visit to find out more. It’s your turn022-023:Layout 1 11/10/13 13:02 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY23ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIREwork at major exhibitions, schools, symposia and galleries in both the UK andthe USA, including the prestigious SOFAexpo in New York and Chicago where sheis represented by the prestigious RileyGalleries. She has won many medals andprizes for woodturning, including awardsin the Worshipful Company of Turners’competitions.Woodturning is one of our oldest andmost traditional crafts, which Joey feelspassionate to keep alive. She teaches andgives demonstrations of turning, piercing, painting and texturing in the UK and theUSA, inspiring others. She feels skill with the lathe is asfundamental to the creation of wood artas it is to functional turning - salad bowls, spindles and architectural work. Usingtraditional turning methods with hand-held tools, she believes that turned woodart and utility items can raise each other’sprofile in a symbiotic relationship, encouraging more people - young and old- to become either hobby turners orprofessionals.Joey, a Liveryman of the WorshipfulCompany of Turners of London, is one ofthe leaders of the artistic woodturningmovement which is developing in the UK.She is passionate about raising the profileof wood to an art form to encourage UKcollectors and to see wood in high-profilegalleries, exhibitions and museums in theUK. She also encourages the young, giving demonstrations to groupsincluding the scouts.Joey says, “I’d love to bring in a badgefor the scouts for this, it’s such atraditional skill. I’m also keen to getequipment like lathes into disabledschools and the like to encourage theskills to be passed on.”It’s not just the act of turning we learnabout on the visit - the act of piercing, giving the pieces that spindly look, isfascinating. Joey has a separate workshopfor this, with a dentist’s drill modified toinclude small bits in order to make thetiny holes you see in a majority of herwork. The pleasant smell of burning woodfills your nostrils as she works away andgetting this close to the wood istherapeutic too. She finishes thetechnique with an airbrush, tiny amountsof paint are pressurised and sprayed invarying degrees to create light and shadeas well as illustrating the wildlife thatflows throughout her work.To find out more about Joey’s work, log on to www.joeyrichardson.com022-023:Layout 1 11/10/13 13:02 Page 224 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYREADERS’ GARDENSTaking up a spot between one ofMarket Rasen’s busiest roads, the gardenis a retreat of calm and contemplation. On our visit, owner Mary shows us roundand all you can hear is birdsong and theodd buzz from a passing bee.
