Fulbeck’schurch was playing host to a party ofcampanologists and to hear the peal of bellsemphasised both the original role of the homeand its position at the centre of Fulbeck’scommunity. The Old Rectory, as its name suggests, wasbuilt in 1893 for the rector of Fulbeck’s church, which is more or less next door, after he decidedto downsize and move from Fulbeck Manor. Aswith much of the village, including the church, itwas built with Ancaster Limestone and as Nigeltells us, it was constructed in an extremelyefficient fashion which means, despite its size, itremains surprisingly easy and inexpensive to heat.Nigel says, “Unbelievably the home has cavitywalls and a damp-proof course. Apart fromAhallowedhomeFulbeck is one of the most delightful villages in the county –and Lincolnshire Today readers Nigel and Gilly Brown haveenjoyed some glorious times at The Old RectoryI12-17:Layout 1 13/10/14 12:10 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY13HOMESchanging two small rooms it’s exactly as itwas when we arrived.” It is, however, alittle different to how it was when therector occupied it and only a few roomshad any heating at all.The decisions made back in thenineteenth century have certainly paid off.The home’s mature elevated positionensures spectacular views across the TrentValley. Nigel was born in Lincolnshire andpromised Gilly that when they moved upfrom London forty years ago they wouldlive in a home with a view – something theOld Rectory delivers in spades. Nigel says,“We were looking at another home inLeadenham but we looked at this in Juneand the evening sun totally sold this house14 The Old Rectory was built in 1893 for therector of Fulbeck’s church12-17:Layout 1 13/10/14 12:10 Page 214 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOMESto us, flooding in to all the main rooms.”It’s clearly something to enjoy from theconservatory, which is the major changesince Nigel and Gilly moved in. Theconservatory fits in perfectly with itssurroundings, and it opens out to a fineterrace which, Nigel tells us, is made fromstone previously used for a long abandonedrailway station. One of the most interestingaspects of the conservatory is the waterfeature – originally a window looking downinto the cellar and now filled in and hometo a number of fish. The original architects did seem to makeone small mistake, however – the stainedglass around the front door includes thelegend “salve”, Latin for “welcome”.However, it says this on the inside of thedoor, meaning you only see it when youleave the house! It’s an error nobody’s in arush to correct, however, and there areother aspects which hark back to thehome’s original purpose. It’sconnected to the conservatory so there’splenty of potential for entertaining. Much ofthe furniture, including the grand dining roomtable, has been part of the house since Nigeland Gilly moved in 32 years ago. There’splenty of colour throughout the home, though, with delightful, bright colour schemesmaking it seem vibrant.Throughout the home there are manyreminders of Nigel and Gilly’s careers. Nigelhas served as High Sheriff of Lincolnshire andthe portrait commissioned during his spell inthe role had pride of place on the grandstaircase. Nigel has also served as HonoraryColonel of the Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force,Chairman of the Cathedral Music Appeal and12-17:Layout 1 13/10/14 12:10 Page 5LINCOLNSHIRETODAY17HOMESas President of the Lincolnshire AgriculturalSociety. Of course, Fulbeck’s position means it’sa great place for exploring the county.Nigel and Gilly moved in with two youngsons, with their daughter being born a fewyears later. They’ve found it a fantastic familyhome but the children have now all fled thenest and live with their own families. That’s whyNigel and Gilly have decided after many happyyears to move on – but they won’t be movingvery far. They enjoy Fulbeck so much thatthey’re staying in the village and moving into anew home opposite they’ve built themselves.Nigel says, “We had the chance around fifteenyears ago to but a really quite old barn, and weused it for many years – we had a swimmingpool and various other things for the children –and it came with planning permission. Thatlapsed and we then obtained another planningpermission, with the object that we’d put anultra-modern extension on it. That’s what we’vedone and it’s just been handed over.”This means The Old Rectory is now on themarket with Strutt & Parker – and it wouldmake a fantastic family home. One notable aspect ofThe Old Rectory that you don’t sometimesget from old houses is a sense of open space – therooms benefit from lots of natural light and thedining room in particular offersspectacular views12-17:Layout 1 13/10/14 12:10 Page 6HOMES1 – These gorgeous trays from Jangneus (£29.95) are the perfectpieces to serve drinks on now the nights are drawing in. Pam Bader OBE of domestic cleaningexperts MOLLY MAID has some top tips.* Apply the MOLLY MAID system of cleaning. Clean from the topof the house to the bottom, top to bottom in each room starting onthe left and moving right. This is the quickest and most efficientway to clean.* Dust first, vacuum second. That way, any bits of dust or dirt willfall to the floor and be collected by the vacuum cleaner.* The best dust cloth is a damp, clean, cotton cloth. To dampen, hold the cloth by a corner and lightly mist with clean water from aspray bottle. The cloth should just be damp enough to pick up dustwithout leaving moisture streaks on the furniture.* To soften splatters inside the microwave, fill a cup with waterand microwave on high for a few minutes. The steam will loosenany baked on food so you can easily wipe it clean.* When cleaning windows, wipe one side of the glass horizontallyand the other side vertically. This way, when polishing out streaks, itwill be easy to determine which side they are.If the task seems too unwieldy, you can always call upon MOLLYMAID – Britain’s largest professional main service company.Trust the domestic cleaningexperts atMOLLY MAID0844 414 5322 gayle-sparrow@mollymaid.co.ukwww.mollymaid.co.uk/lincoln• Uniformed and professionally trained staff• 100% guaranteed and insured• Free in-home estimate• No contracts• All materials supplied• Regular or occasional cleans• More affordable than you think18-19:Layout 1 13/10/14 12:15 Page 2Next >
