Set well back from theroad in a private elevated position, and approachedby a gently sloping driveway, the Old Rectory is astunning family home that has undergone anextensive restoration. Entering from the rear, via a stone portico andthrough central and inner halls, we are greeted by alight and airy open plan kitchen and dining room.Contemporary in design we just love the feeling ofspace which is enhanced by two sets of Frenchdoors opening to the south facing terrace. Rather cleverly, a separate dining roomwhich also overlooks the terrace links thekitchen through to the sitting room, which again has French doors to theoutdoors. The sitting room, which includes afireplace with an impressive woodburning stove is designed as acomfortable and liveable space for theoccupants to enjoy and undoubtedly agreat place to cozy up in the coldermonths, enjoying the views outside fromthe warmth of the sitting room. Clearly, no expense has been spared onthis restoration as can be seen from theample sized study, which also enjoys twinaspects. Natural elements such aswooden flooring are fitted throughoutthe ground floor, which also benefit fromunderfloor heating.Venturing upstairs, there are five goodsized bedrooms, three of which areensuite. A good sized, family bathroomfinished in neutral colours with half tiledwalls and a fully tiled floors, serves thosebedrooms that aren’t fitted with ensuiteand has all the necessary amenities, including an over the bath shower andneat vanity unit to keep the room clutterfree. The view and gardens outside thoughis the piece de resistance, although I amsomewhat biased, being a garden lovermyself. Mature trees and a moodlit terracewould satisfy most of us, but venturefurther and you’ll come across a sunkengarden which offers a private retreat, unseen from the house. Gravelled stepslead down to this area where a largecentral koi pond reveals itself. And, asthough inspired by George Clarke’s‘amazing spaces’, a substantiallyconstructed timber summerhouse withveranda extends over decking to thewater’s edge, making it look and feel asthough the building is floating on water. It’s a perfect vantage point to enjoy thesurrounding vistas. It doesn’t stop there though, pathwaysleading all around the circumferencedraw the visitor through its well stockedborders and a profusion of plants andshrubs offer year round interest. Theseborders are again mood lit to enhancethe views once the sun sets.Such is the quality and uniqueness ofthis home, it is difficult to imagineanyone being able to part with it butsomehow the owners have decided thatthis time has come and the Old Rectoryhas just been placed on the market at theremarkable price of £650,000 with Fineand Country of Grantham, meaningsomeone’s dream of living in an idyllicproperty is about to come true. 16-18_Layout 1 12/10/2015 16:04 Page 3John’s long term previous involvement in the furnitureindustry meant he knew that the trend elsewhere was to offerlower quality, imported products. Many of the larger furnitureretailers were supplying products at high prices, which becameunfit for use in just a few years sometimes in only a matter ofmonths! This was the inspiration behind “Chesterfields inLincoln” and a new business was born.Offering only hand craftedChesterfield furniture was uniquein Lincolnshire and thisnew niche business quicklyestablished a reputation forsupplying top quality bespokeitems at very competitive prices. In fact, followingrecommendations from hiscustomers, John soon found himself supplying furniture tocustomer’s right across the UK. However, it became all he coulddo to keep up with the business workload. Ultimately, the decision had to be taken to grow what hadbegun, only a few years earlier as a hobby, into a full timebusiness and happily this meant that John’s son, RichardAppleton could join him once more, making Chesterfields inLincoln a true family business. Now enjoying it’s fifth successful year, the business has growninto one of those amazing Lincolnshire stories that trades bothlocally and nationally. Orders are regularly received and fulfilledfrom the South Coast of the country, right up into Scotland andtheir pledge to continue to provide a quality and service whichis “above and beyond” is as true to-day asit was at the outset of the hobby. John & Richard enjoy working togetheronce again - “entrepreneur” and“olderpreneur” enjoying the perfectpartnership; with perfect products. Growing afamily businessfrom a hobby A couple of years after retiring from his large furniturebusiness, in 2007, John Appleton found himself wonderingwhat to do with all of his spare time and although he did notmiss the long hours and stress, what he did miss was thesatisfaction that running your own business brings. He soondecided, with his wife Colleen, to start a new part timebusiness supplying the finest quality traditional leatherfurniture; each piece entirely hand made by British Craftsmen.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY19HOMESChesterfields in Lincoln is located at 2 Ryland Bridge, Dunholme Road, Welton by Lincoln, LN2 3RP.
