Butnestled on the wind is the chilly reality ofwinter living. It’s the time of the seasonwhere fending off dry itchy skin andchapped lips is a day to day struggle. Fearnot, preparing now will keep the effectsto a minimal and leave skin with a healthyglow throughout the pitfall of winter. Everybody has a different complexionand skin tone, which will react differentlywhen met with cold air and, of course, requires varying levels of treatment andattention. Lifestyle and habits are allcontributing factors. Someone with anactive lifestyle will need much morevigorous protection than those who preferthe cosiness of the home when it’s coldoutside. If the whipping chill is responsible forsapping the skin’s moisture then it shouldreally go without saying that moisturisingis paramount. Moisturising will most likelybe a part of most people’s beauty regime, but there’s often a need to regularly apply. The best time to apply moisturiser isstraight after bathing, when the skin in stilldamp as this locks in all the essential oilsbefore having a chance to dry out. Often,a moisturiser that works through springand summer won’t have nearly the sameeffect when the temperature plummets.Try switching to an oil-based moisturiserinstead, as this will provide a protectivelayer, allowing the skin to retain moremoisture than any cream or lotion. Sunlotion will also add another layer ofprotection, as well as fending off thewinter sun, which is more damaging toskin than in summer. When it’s particularly frosty outside, it’seven advised to keep bathing time downto a minimum, coupled with a moisture-rich soap and cooler water. Hot waterbreaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, and this leads to a devastating loss ofmoisture. It might be tempting to use ahot soak to while away the nip, but it’lldo more damage than good in the longrun. One of the most problematic areas ishands. As the skin here is thinner than themajority of the body, and has far fewer oilglands, it’s often the first area to real feelthe sting. A good pair of gloves will helpThe gift ofglowing skin As the chilly winds settle in for the long haul, and the sights of Lincolnshire beckon, we provide youwith an in-depth guide to beating that winter itch and keeping skin looking its natural best. PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/JPC-PRODPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/OLGA MILTSOVAPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/PHOENIXNSto keep the worst at bay, as well asregularly moisturising. It doesn’t take much for the cold tomake lips chap, and, left to their owndevices, will only worsen. For starters, licking your lips is a strictly forbidden, never mind biting. Using a lip scrub willhelp to scrub away the worst of thedryness; even using a toothbrush beforebed can have a dramatic effect. Using aliberal smear of lip balm or moisturiserwill ensure a plump and smooth kiss. Homeowners might be used todehumidifying the household, but addingmoisture to the air will allow hair andskin to keep itself in tip top shape.Portable humidifiers are an inexpensiveaddition to a heating system and aneffortless way to fend off dryness. Pairing the right beauty regime alongwith the usual suspects of good diet andplenty of exercise is the tried and testedformula to enjoy glowing, soft skin thisfestive season. One such CrossFitter tells us his story.I had tried “doingweights” before butnever lasted morethan a fortnight dueto boredomIstill remember the moment well. Itwas around my 51st birthday and Iwas doing a rowing session with mysons, Duncan and Andy. At the end ofit, Andrew turned to me and said,“Dad, you can keep going all day, butyou lack power.” Ouch.He was right. Although I had keptmyself fit over the years as a longdistance runner and rower, I had slowlybecome weaker and despite logginganything up to 100 miles per week, more than a little flabby on my upperbody. I had tried “doing weights”before but never lasted more than afortnight due to boredom (ironic fromsomebody who would happily run forhours). Andy had recently started thisCrossFit thing to supplement his rugbytraining and I decided to try as well.On 2 January 2013, I went into mylocal gym and tried the workout of theday published on the main CrossFitwebsite. It was 3 rounds of overheadpressing of a modest weight and pullups. Neither of which I could manage.I ended up reducing the weight by halfand jumping into each pull up. And itstill took me 3 times longer than theaverage time. But that is one of thebeauties of CrossFit, we can scale theseparate elements in each workout tosuit our individual ability. Although itwas a humbling experience, I got aperverse enjoyment from it and waseager to discover what the next day’schallenge was.I soon became hooked, and tacklingthe “WOD” became the focus of myday. This would often result in strangelooks from the other gym goers as Iwould tackle movements that weredefinitely not normal for a conventionalcommercial gym - one legged squats, handstand press ups, snatching, boxjumps just to name a few. This was nothelped by the fact that there were oftentimes, I couldn’t actually do themovement - it took me over a year oftrying to manage just one handstandpress up. Progress was slow, but slowprogress beats no progress. When CrossFit Witham opened lastyear I didn’t join immediately as I wasn’tsure they would be interested insomebody of my age and lack of ability.I needn’t have worried. Nobody seemsthe slightest bit interested in how old Iam and there are plenty at my level.Training with a group has brought meon further than I ever dreamed possible.Stuff which I thought I was way too oldfor has become doable. Yes, it takes memuch longer than the twenty-something year olds to master a newskill, but I eventually get there. 44-45_Layout 1 12/10/2015 15:44 Page 1HEALTH & FITNESSThanks to the coaches and thegeneral support at Witham, I’ve feltconfident enough to have a go at somecompetitions, and it was a specialmoment for me to team up with my sonAndy for a pairs competition thissummer. We more than held our ownand this time he didn’t call me out forbeing weak! You’re never too old!And a word from one of thecoaches, AdamAt CrossFit Witham we pride ourselveson the fact that our workouts aresuitable for all ages, abilities and fitnesslevels.
