The garden has a lovely structure withmature trees, meandering pathways andstreamlets complete with bridges to spanthem and borders offering interest andcolour all year round. And, set insecluded grounds of about half an acre itis truly unique, spanning both banks ofthe West Glen River, which drops in levelto a mill pond, complete with its ownsluice gate and original water wheeldating back to 1868. It has taken the couple some 22 yearsto create what we see today and theresults are nothing short of startling –when Frances and Derek first moved inthere was much to be done in both thehouse and the garden, but having fallenin love with the property and its locationthey could see, in their mind’s eye, justwhat potential the property had. AsFrances explains, “It was really a case oftaking things step by step, as bringing upsmall children took precedence. Weredecorated slowly, room by room as andwhen we could, with the aim of creatinga house that would give us acontemporary modern home in atraditional setting. Hopefully, we’vemanaged to find that balance.” Outside, the story was the same witharound thirty self-seeded sycamores and14 Á12-17_Layout 1 17/10/2016 14:06 Page 214 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYash trees to remove before they could even beginto see the charm of the garden that lay beneath.“We needed to bring in light and air and oncewe’d managed this we could see the basics of agarden once again.” The design structure, given the watersidelocation and the setting which overlooks the villagechurch gave them inspiration and the confidenceto move forwards, but it was a daunting task.“Fortunately, both Derek and I were enthusiasticfrom the start and we enjoyed working together tocreate the garden and house, as it is today.” And, what a great job they’ve done. Oncethrough the wrought iron gates and the six-panelled door that sits below an attractive stonecarved portico, the imposing reception hall, flooded with natural light from dual aspectwindows, it has a high ceiling with features such asthe cornicing now restored to its former glory. The real centrepiece ofthe hall though is the magnificent centralstaircase, but we explore the ground floorrooms first. Leading off the hall are the drawing room, dining room and study, all of which are wellappointed and benefit from copious amountsof natural light through the expansivewindows. To the rear of the house is thekitchen and orangery which has to be seen tobe believed. Ask Frances and Derek what drew themto the house all those years ago and theyboth agree it’s a combination of factors:“The standard of schools was a big factor, but so too was the lovely villages andtowns all around, then there’s theproximity to London.” Then she adds, with a smile, “I suppose you could say allthree would be a case of ‘Location,Location, Location’.“ It’s plain to tell, from chatting with thecouple, that Greatford Mill has proven awonderful home and has been enjoyed bythe whole family and their friends. However, with the children now studyingaway at university, this property with itshistoric character and charm and the verybest of modern fixtures and fittings is aboutto go on sale with Stamford’s estate agents,Fine & Country. Each will sport somesort of reclaimed or reused furniture piece in amongst its interior, whether it’s an antique or upcycled. We all have our assumptions, but when it comes to interior design, it’s best to leave allpreconceptions at the door. It isn’t just a matter of sticking a fewbits of weather-beaten furniture about the house. More and more homeowners are steering clear of sticking to onestyle, and forging their own paths by drawing from a wide pool ofinspirations. It’s all about breaking conventions; just becausesomeone has said you can’t do it doesn’t mean they’re right. There are plenty of benefits that come with modern design,we’ve often sung the praises of clean and contemporaryfurnishings, but it can sometimes come across as sterile. Withupcycling and reclaimed furniture, each piece comes packed withcharacter, standing apart on its own merits, but working with therest of the décor. A Persian rug still emanates great taste, sophisticated style andworks with a variety of other furnishings, and if it’s a littlethreadbare, than all the better to achieve that effortless, lived inlook. Urbanites are opting for the Persian rug in droves, and mixingthings up with shabby chic furniture pieces. The contrast is striking, easy to achieve and will soon make your home the envy of all yourfriends. There’s nothing quite like being a trendsetter. Repurpose, reuse, relax Chic is often shorthand for the reclamation of aforgotten style, or the bringing an otherwise innocuouslook upmarket. 118-19_Layout 1 17/10/2016 14:09 Page 1AIR POWER ARTAviation and WarbirdThemed Art PiecesAvailable In A Wide Variety of Prints, Canvases And Wall Artwww.airpowerart.co.ukLINCOLNSHIRETODAY19HOMESPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/PHOTOGRAPHEE.EU231) Salon Buffet Mindi In addition to its functionality, this solid wood lounge furniture fromWanda Collection provides your living room with stylish, on trenddesign. 2) Roadie Chic Reclaimed Wood Tall TableThis ‘Roadie Chic’ table from Baumhaus is the very definition ofupcycling as well as boasting environmentally-friendly credentials. 3) Urban Chic One Drawer Lamp TableThis stunning table from Harley & Lola works as either a desk or adressing table.
