Jon:Talent shows are a hugeopportunity for performers to showcasethemselves to a huge audience. We wereso fortunate to have the exposure we didback in 2004 and although the varioustalent shows have certainly evolved andbecome more contrived, the ability to shineis still there and we would all recommendpeople putting themselves up for it.As well as performing vocal staplessuch as Nessun Dorma alongsidecontemporary pop pieces, howchallenging is it to present a broadsection of genres and styles? Mike:It’s always a challenge, especiallyon tour when we’re singing 2 hours of livevocals every night. But that’s where ourclassical training enables us to do this (westudied singing at the Guildhall School ofMusic and Drama in London, hence the “G”in our name) and we absolutely lovesinging Nessun Dorma, then a snippet ofJustin Bieber straight afterwards, and whatwe do on stage is totally unique.Given your continued appeal, andstorming the charts with your renditionof Bohemian Rhapsody, would you saythere’s still an appetite for vocal groups? Ben: Most definitely. And particularlywhen you look at some of the other greatvocal groups to come out of the X Factor(JLS, Little Mix, One Direction etc.) there’sroom for us all, and the fantastic supportwe get from live audiences makes it allmake sense. You’ve incorporated local choirs intoyour live shows, making each venuedifferent and fun, whose idea was this, and how has it worked out with thosedifferent choirs?Nick:It was something we were all keenon doing, for various reasons really!Selfishly it’s great for us to have a newchoir every night, as they always bringfresh energy and excitement to the stage, but also we love working with local choirs, providing them with the opportunity toshare in the fun we have in the shows. There are certainly some staple G4 songsthat we couldn’t imagine performingwithout a choir! They’re often integral tothe power of the music and to the show.A variety of songs have been given theG4 treatment, how difficult is it to take asong and strip away the instrumentationand turn it into a four piece. Mike:For us it’s all about trying newthings with songs - why cover a song ifyou’re going to do a karaoke copy version? But it’s great fun for us to experiment, andsome songs just don’t work for us, but wehave to try things first and never rule out asong until we’ve tried to do somethingnew. Having said that, we don’t try to dorap! We’re about to record our new albumG4 Love Songs and it’s been great fun totake some huge love anthems andrearrange them for our 4 vocals and tomake the arrangements for a full orchestraand band to create an overwhelmingsound.Last year you released your firstChristmas album, full of traditional hymns, are there any plans to release another?Ben:Not another Christmas-specificalbum, but G4 Love Songs, in associationwith Pledge Music, comes out in February,so it’s not long for people to wait! Ourtraditional Christmas cathedral tour, however, should satisfy the appetites ofthose hoping for more of that stuff.2017 looks set to be a big year for G4with a brand new studio album and a 20date UK tour, what else does the futurehold? Nick:Well I can’t tell all as there aresome closely guarded secrets! But I thinkit’s fair to say that 2017 will be our busiestyear yet. We’re all definitely excited aboutrevisiting venues from the last few yearsand travelling to new ones as well, meetingfans, old and new, along the way. Also, younever know what Christmas might bring.Like your Christmas album, yourforthcoming fifth album is also crowd-funded. Is this an approach you wouldtake again in the future and what are thebenefits of doing so? Jon:It is amazing that artists can nowtake the lead in their music creation withthe support of a fabulous fan base andcrowdfunding. We have been blown awayby the support that we have receivedthrough our Pledge Music album projects. We love the interaction in the process thatenables the fans to feel closer to the finalalbum as they are involved in the entireprocess. People can get involved by justpre ordering the new ‘G4 Love Songs’album, get signed albums or othermemorabilia but can also do something alittle more exciting. We have many fans thisyear pledging for higher value and once ina lifetime exclusives such as Tea at the Ritz,Bowling with G4 and Dinner in The Dark!We will certainly look at doing a projectlike this again in the future. You’ve recorded yourselves going outand interacting with the audience, howimportant is this aspect to your live showsand do you expect to use technology inmore depth for your 2017 tour?Mike:We’re always looking for new andinteresting ways to develop what we do ontour. We love brainstorming ideas (and wecome up with very random stuff that nevermakes the cut!) but that enables us toexplore new things and create the bestshow we can. We have been streamingparts of our tour shows to Facebook livevideo, and social media is forever growingand expanding its capabilities. We’relooking forward to coming up with somenew concepts for our tour next year, whenwe take our new album on the road. For your crowdfunding campaign, youalso set aside 5% of the goal for charity.Do you think performers and artists havea reasonability to give back?Jon:It is so lovely to give somethingback through what we love to do.Supporting charities is a huge part of all ofour lives and we all have affiliationsindividually and as a group with someincredible charities. Our support for BreastCancer Care with this album is very specialas I have been an ambassador for them forover 10 years ever since we lost my AuntieBrenda to this disease in August 2003.They provide such valued support for somany every year and helping in this smallway is our honour. 82-83_Layout 1 17/10/2016 14:38 Page 284 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYSUDOKUcompetitionClosing date for entries is: 20th NOVEMBER2016To enter just email the numbers thatappear in the yellow squares to:competitions@blmgroup.co.ukWin a £20 voucher tospend with any of ouradvertisers in this issue.Last month’s solutionA1P3RD2E7C356194278248375619197268345763541982485629731912837564871953426524716893639482157Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20Some things are hard to face. It’s struggling up Steep Hill with Dad when I was about 11 (50 yearsago!) with our bikes to see Grandma in Rasen Lane & not realising howlucky I was to be walking past the Castle & Cathedral & through theBailgate.Growing up with Hartsholme Park as our back garden & the gravelpits (now transformed beautifully into Swanholme Lakes) as our inland‘beach’.Lincolnshire is ‘proper rural’, the small villages with thatched roofs &off-the-beaten-track hamlets surrounding my present home in Bardney,& the coastal delights of Mablethorpe, Skegness & Cleethorpes. To say that I appreciate all this far more since coming back 16 yearsago would be an understatement, but that’s sometimes the only way wereally look differently at familiar surroundings.
