But like jumpingheadlong into freezing water, sacrificing the carefully cultivatedcomfort of the homestead can be amonumental challenge. Rather thangive into apathy and thedestruction of diet, why not focusinstead on indoor exercises. Indoor workouts might differ in a great many ways from working up asweat in the great outdoors, but the principle remains the same. It’s bestto warm up, stretch and get the blood flowing, otherwise you’re onlyinviting cramp, dizziness and a dozen other workout related injuries thatcould result in a trip to A&E rather than a toned body. Warming up is an example of wider preparation which must include aplan of action. Without outlining one’s fitness goals, any regime can betantamount to poking around in the dark. After identifying what it is youhope to gain from working out – i.e. keeping fit, getting in shape, looking good naked – you then have to find appropriate exercises toreach that goal.If mental wellbeing and a gentle workout are your endeavours thantry pilates or yoga. Both help tone and exercise the body whilst alsohaving a positive effect on mental health. Most towns will have yogaclasses that regularly meet, and many of the county’s spas and fitnessestablishments will also have yoga classes, but for those that have a tightschedule, or might be self-conscious about exercising in front of people, there’s no shortage of online videos that guide you through themovements. Yoga mats are inexpensive, so this is a great way to keepyour mind and body in great shape through the winter and on thecheap. For those lucky enough to have a home gym, then now is the time ofyear to break out the dumbbells and treadmill. Again, planning iscritical, as it’s easy to lose sight of fitness goals and just lift weightsabsentmindedly. Pumping iron usually comes with the assumption ofbuilding body mass, and so increasing the number of lifts and theweight lifted is key to piling on the muscle. Exercise bikes, treadmills andcross trainers are all great ways of strengthening the body’s core andproviding an excellent cardiovascular workout. The benefit of an exercisebike or treadmill is that you can pare it with catching up on Netflix, correspondence or, better yet, reading a book. Don’t let the mind lagbehind, strengthen it in tandem with the body. It can be a difficult time of year for kids, what with the shorter daysand the constant drizzle and the overcast skies. Inside play is critical tokeeping them from piling the pounds on and gawping at the idiot boxin their spare time. Space permitting, hula hoops and skipping ropes areall great ways to combine exercising and play that can also be used byparents. It’s always best to lead by example and so if you want the littleones to get up and exercise, it’s best to get moving yourself.52-53_Layout 1 18/10/2017 10:01 Page 1HEALTH & FITNESS52-53_Layout 1 18/10/2017 10:01 Page 2THE ST JAMES GRIMSBYDECEMBER AT THE ST JAMES HOTELHSANTA’S SUNDAY LUNCH17th December – Sunday Lunch with a visit from SantaClaus Adults £15.00 | Children (over 3 years) £7.75H FESTIVE LUNCHESA delicious 3-course meal in our stylish ChantryRestaurant Adults £12.50H FESTIVE AFTERNOON TEAAn irresistible festive twist on our traditional afternoon tea £12 per person | £20 for two peopleH BOXING DAY LUNCHSpend quality time together over a delicious Boxing—Dayfeast Adults £14.50 | Children £7.75H NEW YEAR’S EVEWelcome 2018 in style with dinner, dancing & live entertainmentFrom £53.00 per person01472 359 771 | stjames@corushotels.comCHRISTMAS PARTY NIGHTS SELLING OUT FAST!54-60_Layout 1 18/10/2017 09:58 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY55FOOD & DININGThis delightful tipple conjures the heady spirit of Christmas with its sweet andfloral rose accents.Pour 2 measures gin, 175ml cranberry guide, 1tsp honey and 1/4tsp rosewater into a highball glass.Stir with a bar soon until the honey has dissolved.Add ice cubes, 1tsp pomegranate seeds and 1/4tsp dried rose petals, then stir again.Decorate with more rose petals and serve immediately with a straw.TURKISH DELIGHTGIN COCKTAILChristmas cocktailsIt might not be the most wonderful time of year just yet, but party season willsoon be upon us and that means it’s time to break out the cocktails.
