And, the Mondial del'Auto, held in Paris’s Porte de Versailles exhibitioncentre, certainly didn't disappoint - despite theabsence of a few mainstream manufacturers. That didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of thoseattending though as there were a significant numberof new launches, including the new BMW 3 Series, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, the Skoda Kodiaq vRSand new contenders such as Vietnam's Vinfastsedans and SUV models – which are underpinnedand powered by BMW - as well as Asian carmakersKia and Hyundai, and China’s GuangzhouAutomobile Group (GAC) showing their prowess.Amongst the highlights were a new, seventh-generation BMW 3 Series, and the latest EVofferings from manufacturers including MercedesHyundai i30 Fastback NAudi e-tron76 ÁRange Rover SV Coupe74-77.qxp_Layout 1 15/10/2018 14:14 Page 276 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCOUNTY MOTORINGand Audi, as well as Jaguar, and Land Rover andunusual as it might seem, Tesla who we don’t seemto see that often at such shows. There was, of course, no shortage of concept carsand one of the most striking of which for many wasthe Mercedes Benz EQ Silver Arrow. A streamlined, futuristic interpretation of a grand prix racing vehiclesporting a powerful combination of 550kW outputand a thin 80kWh battery in the underbody which, according to the manufacturer delivers in excess of400km. But futuristic developments don’t stop there.Renault were also keen to prove their talents with theirEz-Ultimo, an autonomous, self-driving, car whichprovides a glimpse of what is around the next corner. Other, more down to earth concepts such asInfiniti’s new Project Black S Prototype alsocreated quite a stir. Said to be powered by theQ60's 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 producing 400hp, italso has an unique dual-hybrid arrangement thatthe manufacturer says can increase the output toover 560 hp, the manufacturer was tight lippedon whether this one will make it into production.Across the hall, was BMW’s new Z4 which WILLbe in production, and available with a choice of2.0-litre four-cylinder engine offering 255hp or a3.0-litre inline-six offering 382hp. There was alsothe 2019 facelifted version of the Lexus RC, and ahost of new models from various manufacturers, which we feature in these pages. Then you have the gearshift paddles, which are a quick snatchaway from your fingertips.Light up the V8 twin-turbo, and there is a howl from the exhaust. Rev the lump past 3,000rpm – and someadditional noise is added to the barking note. Yet, while the turbo assisted powerplant has an 8,000rpm redline, some might lament the raw, naturally aspirated, tone of Ferrari’s 458.In the driver’s seat, you sit reasonably far forward, and you’re conscious that there is an awful lot of Ferraribehind you. However, the 488 doesn’t feel ungainly on the move. As you may anticipate, the throttle bringsinstantaneous acceleration, and the ultra-quick steering delivers near-extrasensory responses. On a bouncy B-road, the Ferrari 488 darts around a bit as the wheels seek the road surface, but the superbride and unflappable suspension mean it never feels like you’re fighting with the wheel. Instead, youcan simply focus on driving, as the GTB delivers a massively enchanting experience. On British roads, you’re scarcely tapping into the 488’s ability, but you can melt milesexceptionally quickly and get a feel for how alert this Ferrari is. Foot-to-the-floor throttlegearchanges in manual mode dispense a punch in the back, while in auto setting, electronicengineering makes sure you’re in the correct gear whatever the situation.Ferrari 488 GTB ReviewExtreme Performanceand Driving Thrills78-79.qxp_Layout 1 15/10/2018 14:16 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY79COUNTY MOTORINGFast FactsFerrari 488 GTB - as testedMax speed: 205 mph0-62 mph: 3.0 secsCombined mpg: 24.8Engine layout: 3902cc twinturbocharged V8Max. power (PS): 670CO2: 260 g/km Price: £197,48878-79.qxp_Layout 1 15/10/2018 14:16 Page 2Next >
