Chances are it’s probably a fir tree bejewelled in baubles, tinsel and twinkling lights. Whether artificial or real, there’s no denying these trees are indispensable when it comes to the festive season. A tradition in many a household is to decorate the tree as a family. It’s a great way to ease into the seasonal spirit and spend some quality time together. We can’t make promises that this won’t lead to any arguments, though, as some people can get quite defensive about how the tinsel should be positioned. As with much of our Christmas traditions, the tree predates Christianity and has its roots in paganism. However, the tree tradition as we recognise it today dates back to 16th century Germany. Here devout Christians would bring decorated trees into the house. Most sources agree that Protestant reformer Martin Luther was the first to put lighted candles on these trees. Thanks to the royal family in the Victorian age, Britain fell in love with the idea of Christmas trees, while German settlers brought the tradition over with them to United States. Whatever their origins, it’s obvious that Christmas trees – like the rest of the season itself – represent togetherness. Sadly, not everyone can be with their loved ones. Most of us have lost people we’re close to and Christmas offers an ideal time to remember and honour them. Lincolnshire Co-op will again be running its memorial Christmas trees at their funeral homes this year. But it’s one of the best parts! The issue is that most people leave it until the last possible moment and then have the gall to complain about the crowds, the traffic and the lack of choice on shelves. It’s really no wonder that stores and shopping centres begin their festivities early. Not only is it a great way to ease you into the spirit, but means you can also beat the latecomers, get some great gifts and snap up a bargain in the process. One of the best parts about Christmas shopping is seeing the displays in shop windows, decorated stores and, of course, the Christmas lights. It’s the time of year when towns across the county are inviting in celebrities to switch on their displays. These are wonderful events that draw in big crowds in celebration, watching in anticipation as all those little lights erupt into colour. It’s worth keeping an eye on what your favourite shops and department stores are up to this time of year, as many have special events, discounts and celebrations on. Family-run and independent shops, boutiques and department stores like Oldrids & Downtown excel in this regard, offering that special touch that you can only really get from these kinds of establishments. If Christmas is all about family, then these stores and sellers understand the ins and outs of the season. Much as we love all that the high street has to offer, there’s no beating a specially organised Christmas shopping market or event. Many of you will, no doubt, be attending Lincoln Christmas Market again this year, but there’s many more opportunities in the county to pick up some truly unique gifts for loved ones. There are heritage sites, county manors, parks, venues and grounds all over Lincolnshire that offer festive shopping experiences throughout November and December. Not only do they bring the community together, but they’re also a cornucopia of local artisans, crafters and producers selling amazing items you won’t find anywhere else. If you’ve never been before, now’s the time to change that. Why not try Belvoir Castle? Present inspiration Even with brilliant shops, department stores, markets and artisans at our disposal, finding the right gift for a friend or family member – not to mention that awkward colleague you got for secret Santa – can be tough. Rather than being spoilt for choice, the issue is more down to inspiration. Of course, it’s easy when someone has an obvious hobby. For the sake of argument, let’s say your aunt collects porcelain animals. When it comes to Christmas, it’s easy to know that a ceramic cat will please her. But not everyone is a collector and, indeed, not all hobbies are easy to buy for. You can always just straight-out ask someone what they want for Christmas, though that will depend on how much you want to preserve the surprise. Better that they’re expecting something they’ll love, then be surprised with something they’ll put away after the decorations come down or worse, re-gift later. The important thing to bear in mind is to never use the phrase “that’ll do” when it comes to buying or making someone a present. This is an opportunity to show how much someone means to you, so put the effort in. Buy for others as you would want to be bought for. There’s a reason that some presents are safe bets and that’s because they’re brilliant. One of the very best is bikes. Most of us will remember the joy of receiving a bike for Christmas as a kid, but they’re an ideal present whatever your age. As we’re also harping on about in our health and fitness features, cycling is one of the very best exercises, it works out the whole body and is as gentle or vigorous as you want. It’s a great time of year to buy a bike regardless or whether you’re going to gift it. Lucky for you, Rusty’s Cycles has got a Christmas sale on bikes. © Shutterstock/Africa Studio 60-67.qxp_Layout 1 14/10/2019 11:50 Page 8CHRISTMAS GIFTS The gift f giving Christmas is truly the season of giving, a chance to treat friends and family to something special. Yet too often it’s easy just to pick up something at the supermarket and have done with it. Sure, that’s a lot better that the last-minute panic buy at the petrol station, but we’re all at risk of not putting enough effort in. By starting well ahead of time and putting in some thought, you can really delight your loved ones this December with gifts they’ll cherish forever. Starting can still be difficult, so Lincolnshire Today has put together its annual gift guide to inspire. Happy present hunting!
