Everyone disagrees on when it is “acceptable” to start talking about Christmas. Some say October, but I personally think November is the best month. It’s cold, the last of the leaves have usually fallen from the trees, and the nights are darker on the way back from work, which all contributes to that wintry feeling of Christmas. This year, the cold is likely to be a lot more concerning than it has been in previous years however thanks to the rising cost of living and energy bills. While energy giants post improved earnings and profits, everyone suffers, and apparently it is “anti- growth” and “anti-aspiration” of us to criticise that – according to Liz Truss, anyway. As the days and nights grow colder, a lot of families are going to be tempted to turn down the heating and weather the brunt of it as best they can with warm clothing and many layers. I personally think it’s poor form to tell people what to do, especially if you’re not aware of their circumstances, but the only advice I will give is to take care of yourselves and your families and, if you are well enough off to not be in any danger, then to spare a thought for those who will be forced to choose between heating and food this Christmas, especially our elderly population. Spare a thought and, if possible, some food and donations for them, to ensure that we all have an enjoyable and safe Christmas. I don’t want this to all be doom and gloom, however. We’ve had enough of that in recent months. That’s why this issue is all about getting out and about and enjoying ourselves in Lincolnshire. The season of celebration approaches, and there’s never been a better time to get out there and enjoy yourselves. In a dramatic makeover, tree works and scrub clearing have created areas for wildflowers to flourish at Axholme Line Nature Reserve in Haxey. Access to the seven-hectare site has also been enhanced, making it easier for people to enjoy the abundance of wildlife that flocks to the site. The regeneration, made possible thanks to a £9,750 grant from the FCC Communities Foundation, comes as North Lincolnshire Council drives forward its Green Future commitment – slashing carbon emissions, planting trees and achieving net zero by 2030. Suntime Caravan Hire owner, Clive Denton, has been found guilty of eight counts of fraud. The case against Denton was brought by Lincolnshire Trading Standards after receiving an influx of complaints about his company. Between August 2018 and November 2018, Mr Denton took bookings and payments to supply caravans to customers attending the ‘New Wine’ festival in 2019. Lincolnshire Trading Standards began receiving complaints in July 2019 as Suntime’s customers were unable to get in touch with them prior to the event. When the festival came, six customers who had booked and paid for caravans with Suntime never received them, and were left out of pocket when they had to make alternative arrangements at the last minute. One customer did receive their caravan, but it was in an unfit condition. The stabilisers were not put down, and the caravan subsequently tipped, and the door fell off. Denton tried to claim a friend was running the business for him during this time, and that that friend had been a fraudster who ran off with his money. This contradicted with the customers’ witness accounts, as they had spoken with Denton directly. Lincolnshire green space protected for families to enjoy A wildlife haven between Bottesford and Ashby is to be protected to create a three-mile corridor of green space for nearby families and visitors. The two-and-a-half-acre site, to the south of Lakeside Parkway and east of Wisteria Way, will now be cared for and protected to secure and enhance its natural features after being formally designated as a village green. Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We have a comprehensive plan to protect, enhance and enrich the whole of North Lincolnshire – creating green spaces for people to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. “This area is home to a growing community, and that they are certain it will be secured for future generations is really important. This will ensure it can continue to be used by those communities.” © stock.adobe.com/ Oleksandr © stock.adobe.com/labelled4 latest news Customers to get money back after Lincoln caravan hire company found guilty of fraud 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 17/10/2022 14:47 Page 1Bid to be submitted to officially recognise Isle of Axholme for its outstanding natural beauty A move to have the Isle of Axholme recognised for its outstanding natural beauty will be made by North Lincolnshire Council. The council will work with Natural England to protect areas from across Crowle, through Belton and Epworth and surrounding towns and villages through an official designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The area is home to many rare and valuable ecological and cultural landscapes, including England’s largest areas of lowland raised mire, some of the most extensive surviving medieval strip field systems in the country, and the first landscapes in Britain to be drained by Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden in the 1620s. Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “The unique landscape across the Isle of Axholme should be protected now and into the future – it is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and we will now press ahead to ensure it is properly recognised as such.” The International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC), Lincoln has unveiled a new installation paying tribute to those who lost their lives during the 1982 war on The Falkland Islands with Argentina. On display at the IBCC until January 2023, the remembrance installation has been created by Standing with Giants, a voluntary community project set up by founder Dan Barton, and is identical to another currently in The Falkland Islands. The poignant display represents 255 silhouetted life-size figures of Seafarers, Royal Marines, Army, and Airmen and three civilians who lost their lives during the 1982 war on The Falkland Islands with Argentina. It commemorates the 40th anniversary of liberation on June 14th, 2022. The silhouettes are framed by poppy wreaths marking the installation’s purpose – recognition and remembrance. On 8 November the memorial will be open until 7pm, with the display illuminated. IBCC’s CEO, Nicky van der Drift, says: “It is a huge honour for us to be able to pay tribute to the fallen of the Falkland’s War with this powerful and emotive installation.” International Bomber Command Centre unveils Falkland Islands tribute Social housing provider plans move to new premises in Grimsby Next spring social landlord Lincolnshire Housing Partnership will move its Grimsby base to Cartergate House, on Chantry Lane in the town. The ground floor office suite, extending to just under 5,000 square feet has been empty since the building was built by North East Lincolnshire Council and occupied mainly by Wilkin Chapman Solicitors. Murray Macdonald, Chief Executive of Lincolnshire Housing Partnership, said: “As an organisation we are embracing modern ways of working and providing our colleagues with both flexibility and the most appropriate facilities for them to undertake their role. We have also seen our customers’ habits change, as well as moving away from the traditional habits of attending a local office, there has been a call for more ways to contact LHP through digital channels. “Having a large office with rows of desks is not particularly efficient and so we have taken the view that a smaller office base and increased technology and flexibility will enable us to invest further into the business.” 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 17/10/2022 14:47 Page 2New Coastal Country Park trail lets more people enjoy Lincolnshire’s coast Lincolnshire County Council has invested £10,000 on an ‘all ability’ path at Chapel Six Marshes Nature Reserve. Located just north of Chapel Point, sandwiched between Roman Bank and the beach, Chapel Six Marshes Nature Reserve is a popular destination for locals and tourists wanting to experience Lincolnshire’s unspoilt coast. The refurbished path has been specifically designed to be accessible for all, especially the less mobile. Without any steep climbs or cambers, the path weaves its way around an area of ponds and marshland allowing people to get close to nature. During the summer months, this area is alive with birds, including many warblers, some of which travel all the way from Africa just to nest here. The path refurbishment cost £10,000 and has been partially funded by the car parking charges at the county council’s coastal car parks at Chapel Six Marshes, Wolla Bank, Anderby Creek, Marsh Yard and Huttoft Car Terrace. Phase one in progress at job-creating Sleaford Moor Enterprise Park Works are well underway on the first phase of a business park which will unlock new jobs for North Kesteven. Phase one of the 37-acre Sleaford Moor Enterprise Park is expected to complete by August next year, ready for the first businesses to move in and call it home. Local contractor Smith Construction is carrying out the initial enabling groundworks for plots one and three to be built, which make up this phase along with the civils and spine road. Harlaxton Engineering, based in Grantham, meanwhile are delivering the site-wide utilities connections for the park. Within plot one will be nine business units ranging from 1,313 sq ft to 2,066 sq ft, benefitting from solar panels, energy efficient insulation and electric vehicle charging points. Plot three contains six slightly larger grow-on business units ranging from 3,369 sq ft to 5,123 sq ft, benefitting from solar panels, an electric vehicle charging shelter and extra efficient insulation. Plans submitted for £67m mixed-use scheme in Boston Residential land specialist Terra has submitted a hybrid planning application for a mixed- use scheme of up to 320 new homes and a care home in Boston, Lincolnshire. Located on land off Toot Lane, less than two miles from Boston town centre, the £67m hybrid scheme is for a detailed first phase of 153 one, two, three and four-bedroom homes, with the proposed care home and balance of 320 homes submitted in outline form. Jordan Langdon-Bates, land and development director of Terra, said: “With so many employment opportunities close by, Boston is an attractive and affordable place to live, and this highly sustainable scheme will add to the vibrancy of the local area. “The scale of this well-located site will enable the creation of a high-quality new community of eco-efficient modern homes, within easy reach of town centre amenities and local schooling. Subject to planning approval, this immediately available site could help to meet South East Lincolnshire’s annual housing targets at a time when there is a considerable shortfall in the number of new homes being built across the UK.” latest news © stock.adobe.com/ torsakarin 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 17/10/2022 14:47 Page 3Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance doctor shortlisted for national award A Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) doctor who is blazing a trail for young surgeons through his work at the charity, has been shortlisted in the Air Ambulances UK (AAUK) Awards of Excellence. Dr Mike Hughes is different to other air ambulance doctors in that he comes from a surgical background, something that isn’t often seen in the helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) – a world which is largely populated with doctors from anaesthesia and emergency medicine. But it’s his set of skills that has brought a different perspective to the work of the crews on board the helicopter. Mike joined LNAA in February 2022 and has been called out to 176 incidents in that time, including 36 road traffic incidents, 23 cardiac arrests and 19 incidents of self-harm. Mike also recently passed the Fellowship of the College of Royal Surgeons examination in Major Trauma Surgery – he is the first person to ever sit the exam and so the first to pass it! An amazing achievement after his first busy six months at LNAA and the recent birth of his third child. 6cZkhfV^ažaaZYk^h]V[hZf"YVf`[Zgh^jZ[ic The magical, after-dark, illuminated trail CHRISTMAS AT BELTON in partnership with 24 NOV – 1 JAN Running selected evenings only X]f^ghbVgVhWZahʩc#Xʩb Work starts on £6m care centre in Scunthorpe Construction has started on a new multi-purpose short-break care centre in Scunthorpe designed to support local young people who have complex disabilities, and their families, by offering access to opportunities and bespoke support.
