As North Lincolnshire Council announced the arrival of their new pothole machine, an appeal for names was inevitable. After all, just a year ago Jake Grittenden was revealed as the winner in a competition to name the council’s gritting lorry, seeing TV celebrity and Scunthorpe boy Jake Quickenden pinpoint the moment as “probably the highlight of [his] career.” While the rudest suggestions for the pothole machine were filtered out, the shortlist of possibilities voted on last month brought some rather fun options including Phil McCavity and Phil McCrackin - showing a common train of thought - as well as Holey Moley. Following the fame of Boaty McBoatface, it was no surprise that Potty McPotface was found amongst the finalists too. Eventually returned to its field, Horncastle, Spilsby & Woodhall Spa Police stated that it was safely caught before it could commit a “ram raid,“ adding a “thank ewe” to the public that helped. The situation has of course seen no end of punny responses online, with one Twitter user saying: “Should have worn your fleeces, and tied it to a lamb-post. That would have been wool worth it. What if they were more than 100 years old? Well, a tin of Rowntree’s chocolate made in 1899, found at a house in Immingham, has sold for over £400 at auction! The 122-year-old chocolate bars, sent to troops during the Boer War, were expected to be claimed for up to £200, ultimately being snapped up for £440. Quoting Paul Cooper, of Eddisons auctioneers, the BBC reported that while there are plenty of tins from the era, finding one with the chocolate inside is actually incredibly rare. There was however one piece missing, begging the question of whether the new owner will gamble finishing the tin off, despite it looking a little more akin to cowpat today. © stock.adobe.com/Christian Delbert 78.qxp_Layout 1 17/10/2022 15:25 Page 1This is broadband happiness.
