That was in1972 at Monaco, with the car inMarlboro’s distinctive red and whitelivery with Jean-Pierre Beltoise at thewheel. The factory doors were closed forever in 1977, with the spares beingsold from the factory in 1981, and thecars going under the hammer at aChristie’s auction at Earl’s Court in thesame year. Mays had died the yearbefore, aged 81.But those days were less importantin Bourne on October 7th, 2012. Thecheering crowds recalled the glory anddream of one man, which was turnedinto reality by the talents of thepeople around him and the sponsorswho shared his vision.“I’m sure I wasn’t the only personwith a tear in his eye watching DamonHill drive his father’s car through thestreets of Bourne to the site of the oldBRM works on Spalding Road,” addedMr Hill.A lunch break on an hour allowed for arelaxing walk along the course.Damon Hill at the wheel of his father’schampionship-winning car from 1962. In fact I’drecommend a bit of yogabefore you try one of these for the firsttime! Of course, I’m jesting; it’s one ofthe joys of owning a true, sit on thefloor, sports car – they are not run ofthe mill – therefore they’re allowed tobe quirky.Once folded into the Elise, I turn thekey, press the starter button, and we’reoff on real-world, less-than-smooth,well used roads and you have toadmire its bone-shaking rawness. There’s no power-assisted steering andthe clutch is heavy, but it doesn’taffect the pleasure obtained fromhammering what is, effectively, afinely-tuned, delightfully made cararound corners and up the straights. Not surprisingly, if you ask car loversto define Lotus in recent years, manywill point to the Elise as a perfectexample of exactly what makes the UKbased car maker a firm favourite in thehearts and minds of petrol-heads. Thesmall lightweight, quick to respond,two-seater mid engine sports carrevolutionised the market sector whenit was introduced back in the 90s. Byrigidly sticking to Lotus’ core values ofperformance through keepingeverything lightweight, the Lotus Elisewas, and still is, able to produce asupercar performance with a city careconomy.Of course, like all good motormanufacturers, Lotus has regularlyadded to the Elise range, tweakingand improving the much-loved entrylevel sports car - and now, the newElise S takes a step closer to motoringMecca. Why? Well, it’s very simple –it replaces the less thanenvironmentally friendly, albeit veryquick, Elise SC with a new 1.8supercharged engine capable ofdelivering 217 bhp and, consequently, even more shove. Withthe new power-plant and animproved throttle response the Elise Sgives an even more stimulating andLotus Elise S 99 Sleek and aggressive, with clever creases, sexy headlamps and more scoops and vents thanyou can shake a stick, the Lotus Elis S is certainly seductive, but does it live up to its looks ?092-099:Layout 1 12/11/12 10:33 Page 6Official Fuel Economy Figures for the MINI Range: Urban 26.4 – 67.3 mpg (10.7 – 4.2 l/100km).
