The biggest difference between abespoke suit and one you might buyoff a hanger is that it’s a fitted suitthat’s going to last a long time. A lotof people see it as an investment, andif you choose a classic style then youcan rest assured that when you pull itout of your wardrobe in five or tenyears’ time, it will still be in fashion. Something we often see is peoplewho have purchased suits from retailstores coming in to ask foradjustments to be made. Often they’vebeen sold a longer jacket not realisingyou can actually get short, regular andlong just like you can with trousers.Few people are of ‘average size’ but itsalmost impossible for stores to stockshort, medium and long in every sizeso that cater for the masses.A tailored suit on the other handwill always sit perfectly on a person, and in most cases is so light, somepeople forget they’re even wearing it.There are a lot of other aspects of aperson that can be taken into accounttoo. Do they favour one leg, are theirshoulders slanted, do they bring theirshoulders back when they stand, howlong are their legs, how long is theirtorso? All of these things willinfluence the making of a tailored suit, and yet none of these things areconsidered when you purchase aready-made suit. When it comes to making a suitfrom scratch, one of the first thingsyou need to think about is fabric. Wealways say a really good suit is madeout of 100% wool, as this will reallystand the test of time. The only timeour suits come back in is whenadjustments are needed often aftertwelve or fifteen years - sometimesones my father even made. There are a few different styles tochoose from when it comes to suits. We find the more classic styles are themost popular, because it fits the idealFrom Savile Rowto Lincoln032-046:Layout 1 12/11/12 10:41 Page 11of an investment a lot more. Aclassical style is usually twobuttons, a single breasted pocketand two vents down the back, andthis is the kind of suit that will seea million different occasions, fromwork to weddings and especiallyjob interviews. A really popularcolour for this type of suit at themoment is charcoal grey, becauseit’s not quite as formal as black, and can still be worn in a morecasual setting. We do offer advice on otherstyles though, if people want orneed something a little different. These can be relatively small changes such as changing the style oflapel, giving notched collars, one button or longer jackets with threebuttons, and changing the number of pockets or whether they slantand where they’re placed. There’s a lot of different options available, which you just don’t get outside of a tailor’s. LINCOLNSHIRETODAY43FASHIONThe Process• A customer would come intothe store, and we would help themselect the perfect material and style. We’d talk about the vents, cuts andcuffs and even help them select alining. We’ll then take theirmeasurements, considering everyaspect of the stance and body.• A paper pattern of thecustomer is made, and I wouldorder in the materials, which willbe cut into a suit and bastedtogether by our tailors. This is aloosely stitched version of the suit(called a pocket baste), which thecustomer will again try on to makesure the fit is perfect.• The pocket baste gets rippeddown flat and adjusted to anythingelse we have found out about thecustomer, the pattern will also beadjusted here and the lining sewn in,as well as the lapels.• The customer comes back in for a final fitting, and after thatwe will finish off the suit. The whole process can take around 8-12 weeks, and the customer will try on the suit no less than threetimes as it is being made.032-046:Layout 1 12/11/12 10:41 Page 12GREAT MENS DESIGNER FASHION LABELSINCLUDING10% OFFFREE DELIVERY ON EVERYTHINGYOUR FIRST ORDERONLINE& INSTOREMVSDINGS.
