A recentaward in the form of a covetedPurple Flag has let the nationknow that Lincoln is a place tovisit both in the day and at night.Assessors for the Purple Flag, ascheme which aims to providerecognition that a place is doingits best to make its night timeoffering impressive and tocounter any negative aspersionsthat might exist. There’s ahealthy music scene, both forclassical music and jazz fans andpop and rock acts alike. Smallerbands can often be foundshaking the foundations of localpubs and bars across the citywith weekends rocking to thebeats of cover bands, open micnights, small gigs and gatheringsof like-minded musicians. TheDrill Hall and the Engine Shedhave brought an array of bignames to the city in terms ofmusic too, recently The Subwaysplayed a sell-out show at theEngine Shed, showing thatLincoln is now getting on themap in terms of live music. Actsset to appear over the next fewmonths are Welsh metallersLostprophets, folkstersBellowhead, political punk FrankTurner and as you might have67 streets packed with revellers atthe weekend and increasingly inthe week would counter this andthe people of Lincoln are rightlyproud of this recognition.Assessors were particularlyimpressed with the amount oflight given to landmarks likeLincoln Cathedral and the ever-expanding offering for night-time visitors to the BrayfordPool area. To think that at onepoint there was talk of drainingthe pool and making it a carpark to what stands there nowseems insane. It’s amazing whatideas can grow into and wherewould Lincoln be without thearray of bars, a cinema and amyriad of fine diningrestaurants and cafes that existthere now? It has almost becomethe place to be seen out and hasmoved on from even just astudent-driven area. The recentadditions including theDoubletree by Hilton hotel andElectric Bar, Starbucks coffeeshop and now its most recentaddition a Wagamama noodlerestaurant mean Lincoln isobviously being seen as a place tolocate national chains andencourages independents to giveit a go in the city too. Far fromdamaging the city’s other areas,it seems to have buoyed theoffering, with more and morevenues appearing up and downthe town centre too. Steep Hilland Bailgate have always beengreat areas for a night out butthere’s even more to do up therethese days. There’s been newrestaurants and even a new pub,The Strait and Narrow has takenup residency in a formercatalogue shop that has beensitting bleak and empty for yearsso it’s great to see new businessescropping up.That’s entertainment! For things to do, Lincoln is064-070:Layout 1 12/11/12 10:46 Page 2064-070:Layout 1 12/11/12 10:46 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY67LINCOLNread recently in LincolnshireToday TheHuman League, who weinterviewed in the last issue. Jake Bug, the young Bob Dylan-likesensation is also set to appear in February. In terms of comedy, Lincoln is becoming almost a hotbed of funnytalent, with the annual ComedyFestival at the Drill Hall, monthlycomedy nights at one of our favourite venues Home and even theEngine Shed hosting big names like Jimeion, Andrew Lawrence andMickey Flanagan we’re getting to be spoilt for choice. This year’scomedy festival had a packed weeks’ worth of program, cramming inEdinburgh Festival faves The Boy With Tape On His Face, Tim Key,Henning Wehn and Andi Osho. As well as mainstream comedymaking its presence felt in Lincoln, there’s several independent clubsif you do some digging, including comic capers being a regulartheatrical feature at the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre. Dance anddrama also takes place there, allowing for more esoteric tastes to becatered for too. Ballet, dance and experimental shows are often afeature, it just takes some investigation.Cinephiles are also being catered for in the city, not only do wehave mainstream cinema screens showing all the latest blockbusters, but two new intriguing projects have also taken off recently. A recentspate of investment at Bishop Grosseteste University has meant theGreaves Theatre is now a fully-functioning theatre, showing an arrayof films from across the world. A volunteer organisation, Off TheBench, has also started to renovate the much-missed Ritz Cinema onthe sometimes-forgotten High Street.
