Approachinga spinney about five hundred yardsfrom the sea bank I saw three robinsbattling over some morsel or branch, and sat quietly watching what else maypop its head out. I heard the peepingcalls of goldcrests high up in thesycamore trees and also in the lowhawthorn hedge right in front of me.They hung from these large leavesbusily feeding on any tiny speck ofprotein they could find.I applaud this wonderful, absolutelyamazing gold crest, smallest of the UKbirds. It always stuns me to think thatthat tiny little body weighing just 6g hasonly yesterday leaped off the coast ofHolland two hundred miles away or evenDenmark, 350 miles away and beat itstiny wings right across the North Sea, inthe middle of the night! Now here theyare, right in front of us replenishing theweight they have just lost on that epicjourney. What other birds made this samejourney? Great grey shrikes, brambling, redwings, fieldfares bluethroats, blackredstarts, whooper swans and robins, lotsand lots of robins. Have you noticedthere are more of them in your gardensince October?I then stood on a bridge looking outover the salt-marsh. Amid the sound ofquarrelling gulls a lone tractor rotovateda field ready for sowing next year’swheat. The fields are ‘goldilocks’, nottoo dry and not too wet, the sowingwill be completed by the end of theweek and in a matter of days thatbrown field will flush green again. Aseason comes, a season goes and nowwinter beckons.I heard the piping of a kingfisher. Itflew low over the narrow creek towardsme and settles on an old iron pipe. ItCOUNTRY DIARYColour in the countyAs Colin Smale points out, this month is definitely all about colour, migrants and memories.76-77:Layout 1 11/11/13 08:49 Page 1WILDLIFEwas in and out of the water in a flashand landed back on the pipe with asparkling fish. The sun was shining fullon it from directly behind me, maybethat’s why it hadn’t seen me? I alreadyhad my camera and long lens on atripod – well, you never know whatmight show up. I only got one shot andthe sound of the shutter was enough tospook her and she flew back down thecreek and deals with the fish about twohundred yards away. She caught her fish... do you remembercatching your first fish? My grandsonwho is about the same age as I was whenI caught my first fish has just asked me if Iwould take him fishing. Even at this agehe is more interested in exploring the realworld than that artificial world within avideo game. He could never haveguessed in his wildest dreams what anexciting introduction to the outside worldthis day was going to be.A very good friend of mine has someprivate ponds and suggested I take himon the medium one, which wasbrimming with fish of all sizes. Thesmaller ones would be not only easier tocatch but with luck, he should catchquite a few. There would be nothingworse to dampen the spirit on a first tripout than to catch no fish at all.In went our bait and in less than fiveminutes I pulled out a small bream.Although he was excited at this I couldalready see competitiveness in his eye –he was not going to be outdone. His floatwent under and he struck so hard his lineand float whipped back into the trees. Not so hard I said, strike gently like this.As I leaned over re-baiting my ownhook I was suddenly aware of a thrashingsound and a leaping lad! He hadanother bite, struck gently, reeled it ingently and a pike of about five poundsflung itself at the small fish on the end ofhis line.I will never forget the magical look onhis face when he discovered that somefish are big enough to swim away and tokeep swimming away no matter whatyou do. Inevitably his line broke but whatan introduction to the natural world. To order copies of the photos on thesepages, visit www.fotolincs.com.76-77:Layout 1 11/11/13 08:49 Page 278 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCOUNTY MOTORINGThe latesttemptationsAs always in our motoring pages we bring you the very latest frommanufacturers and these latest arrivals are aimed at tempting thoseof us who might otherwise wait for the new registrations inJanuary.
