It seems BMW’sfour-wheel drive system was the best kept secret of 2013 whenit launched. BMW always received unwanted bad press when itgets to snowy season. However, the geniuses at BMW HQ haveintroduced their intelligent four wheel drive system, xDrive fromtheir SUV to their hatch, saloon and touring cars. This means allyear round, customers can enjoy the dynamic driving they werepromised when buying a BMW.So what is xDrive? With the BMW xDrive four-wheel drive system, each axle usesits traction to the maximum. The BMW vehicle provides stableacceleration out of bends. If – particularly in adverse conditions– more torque has to be applied to the road, that’s whenDynamic Stability Control comes into operation. In addition toimproving traction, the system also recognises the first signs ofoversteering and understeering. Within a tenth of a second itdistributes up to almost 100% of the engine torque to the frontor rear axle via the transmission and an electronically controlledmultiple-plate clutch before returning to the normal 40:60distribution ratio. With this technology, BMW provides an intelligent four-wheeldrive system with all the benefits of four-wheel drive: precisehandling, optimum cornering and a clear separation betweenthe engine and steering.Want to sample it for yourself?Visit Soper of Lincoln to test drive the xDrive system. Nowavailable on 1 Series, 3 Series Saloon, 3 Series Touring, and ofcourse the X Range: X1, X3, X4, X5 and X6. Why not ask for aquotation to take advantage of their xDrive offers, available untilthe end of December 2014?BMW launchesfour-wheeldrive technology082-083_Layout 1 17/11/2014 09:14 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY83COUNTY MOTORINGAs we all know, we get more than ourfair share of the white fluffy stuff comewinter here in Lincolnshire and with somany roads cutting through opencountryside, build ups of snow or ice onthe road can make a road suddenlytreacherous. This is where the virtues of 4wheel drive come in, but BMW havegone one better than that their xDrive. Instead of choosing front axle, rear axleor all 4 wheel drive, BMW have createdan intelligent all-wheel drive system thatdetects any loss of traction at any wheel(whether that be while cornering at highspeeds or caused by ice, snow, mud orgravel) and then automatically transfersthe appropriate amount of power to theother axle to get you out of anydifficulties.Available on the BMW 3 series and 4series, we have to say it’s a stroke ofgenius - as is the speed at which thexDrive accomplishes this and the fact youcan barely detect the forces at play.In everyday driving, under normal roadconditions, the car receives 60% of thepower at the rear wheels and 40% to thefront. However, as soon as the car’s ECUdetects any loss of grip, it passes theinformation to a centre differential whichsends the power, and that’s up to 100%of it if necessary, to the other axle. The speed of response comes from anelectronically controlled multi plateclutch, rather than the slow reactiontimes that hydraulics would take tooperate and as soon as the hazard hasbeen passed, the system reverts back tothe standard 60/40 split; all in the blinkof an eye!One of our motoring journalists, who’stried the car in the severest of weathersabroad told us, “We tested the 420dxDrive at a ski resort and, as we couldbarely see past the end of the bonnet forsnow falling, I honestly wondered if we’dbitten off more than we could chew. But,after selecting manual mode, the carromped through thick snow. Actually Iwas amazed the car made it up soquickly and was so sure footed that I losttrack of how far up we’d gone. Swinging the car around to begin ourdescent, I was a tad perturbed to see theroad looked steeper going down than itlooked coming up - also the snow on theground looked even thicker. But I needn’thave worried the xDrive made light workof it all; despite the fact I was pushing ithard to test its mettle. The way it continually adjustedallowing more precise steering intocorners was just phenomenal and, apartfrom the familiar vibration of the ABSpedal when I touched the brakes, thecar didn’t seem to mind the snow atall.”Aesthetically, the cars are identical toconventional drive BMWs. The onlydifference is a tiny badge saying xDrivewhich other drivers can only envy at ifyou find yourself on one of Lincolnshire’smany perilous ice covered roads – afterall, if it’ll handle a ski resort it shouldcope admirably here in Lincolnshire. BMW xDrivemeets winter head onWe wanted to see how the BMW xDrivecopes with the white fluffy stuff due here inLincolnshire in the next few weeks, so whatbetter test than to take one up the blizzardsthat make Spain’s ski resort, Sierra Nevada. 082-083_Layout 1 17/11/2014 09:14 Page 2Official government fuel consumption figures in mpg (litres per 100km) for the A-Class range: urban 32.1(8.8)-67.3(4.2), extra urban48.7(5.8)-88.3(3.2), combined 40.9(6.9)-78.5(3.6). Yes,that’s right; I’m talking about theA1. Not that I’m complaining.Well, certainly not when drivingthe new Mercedes-Benz CLS. You see, the German motor isnot really a car, it’s better thanthat, It’s serenely comfortable andcomes loaded with so manyaccoutrements, as standard, that it’s allyou need for a relaxed business-stylecommute. Indeed, the CLS is one of the moststylish cars around. It has the handsomelooks and driver appeal of a coupe, but isstill practical. When launched in 2005, itwas one of the first four-door coupes onsale and wowed the motoring press. Butsince then it’s just got better and better. The new vehicle still gets a great rangeof engines too, with a choice of twodiesels and two petrols. The CLS 350BlueTEC diesel we drove is probably thebest of the bunch due to itsamalgamation of power and runningcosts. However, the CLS 63 AMG wepiloted the other weekend isextraordinarily quick as well, thanks to its5.5 litre V8 biturbo engine which hasseen a rise in output to 577 bhp! Inside there’s a new dash mountedeight inch colour display, much improvedinfotainment system and heated seatsamongst the greater levels of refinement, all designed to really pamper the driver. The new mutibeam LED set up is alsonoteworthy – this uses 24 individuallycontrolled high performance LED’s tobuild on the existing intelligent lightsystem, allowing each LED to adjust upto 100 times per second. Paired to thecar’s dash mounted camera and sat navsystem (now a standard fit), thisinnovation detects bends androundabouts before the steering wheel iseven turned and the LED’s swivel asmuch as 12 degrees provides fantasticvisibility. It also allows the high beamlights to remain partially on whenapproaching traffic withoutdazzling oncoming drivers. As a four-door athletic coupeyou might expect the Mercedes-Benz CLS to be a gas guzzler, butif you go for the right model it’sactually quite thrifty. The diesels are the ones to gofor if frugality is your priority, andthe CLS 220 BlueTEC diesel is themost inexpensive of all to run, squeezing 56.5mpg from thetank. Its emissions of 129g/kmalso mean road tax will be low. But, as we’ve more than hinted, theMercedes CLS 350 BlueTEC diesel is myfavourite. It’s fast but also manages aphenomenal 52.3mpg.Additionally, this year a petrol CLS 400replaces the CLS 350 CGI. It offersstirring performance and even-handedrunning costs. That said, there’s no pointgoing for it if unadulterated speed is yourmain concern. Instead, you’ll want thetop of the range CLS 63 AMG S shootingbrake with its Speedshift MCT 7G-Tronicset up and limited slip diff as standard! Prices start at £46,500 for the 220BlueTec rising to £87,000 for the 63AMG S shooting brake. In every other respect it’sall new and radically different and wecouldn’t wait to get our hands on one. Renault’s all new model is just that – it’sbeen radically redesigned from theground up and introduces a number offirsts including a rear-mounted engine,rear-wheel drive and five doors. It’s quite surprising how much morespace has been created for passengers byplacing the Twingo’s three-cylinder enginebeneath the boot floor and because itdrives the rear wheels, traction is excellenttoo. It also affords a really tight turningcircle which makes u-turns and parking anabsolute doddle. In the cockpit there are plenty morefeatures for the Twingo driver, including aphone dock that allows you to use yoursmartphone as a nav, media interface, andeven a rev-counter, by linking through thecar’s standard Bluetooth connection, onceyou’ve downloaded the free app. New engines bring substantialimprovements in fuel economy andemissions compared with the previousmodels - our test vehicle the 1.0-litreDynamique SCe 70 produced over 67mpg and 95 g/km of CO2 for model andthe Stop/ Start feature, adds 14 miles pergallon, while emitting 35 g/km less CO2.Top speeds of 94 mph and accelerationof 0-60 mph were around 14 seconds, soif you’re after a bit more oomph youmight want to look at the Dynamique TCe90 version powered by the 0.9-litreturbocharged engine which offers 0-60mph in 10.8 seconds and a top speed of103 mph and an official 65.7 mpg, withCO2 emissions of just 99 g/km.Significantly, all engines are capable ofexceeding 50 mpg in city use.The higher-powered 0.9 TCe car alsogets variable-ratio steering as standard, soit responds more quickly as you turn thewheel but they both handle well withminimal body lean on even the fastest ofcorners. More good news comes in the fact thatall versions come with body-colouredbumpers, door handles and exterior doormirror shells, a rear spoiler and LED daytimerunning lights and high creature comfortssuch as power steering, electric frontwindows, remote central locking, a speedlimiter, height-adjustable steering wheel, atrip computer and gearchange indicatorand automatic activation of the rear screenwiper when reverse gear is selected. Practicality is high too thanks to thefolding front passenger seat and split-folding rear seats plus numerous cabinstorage areas and no less than threecupholders. Safety equipment includesElectronic Stability Control, Hill Start Assist,Emergency Brake Assist and four airbags aswell as front and rear headrests and anonboard tyre pressure monitoring system. But the good news doesn’t stop there –the all new Renault Twingo comes with afour-year warranty which offers unlimited-mileage cover in the first two years andthen two further years of protection up to100,000 miles and service intervals of12,500 miles!
