< Previous60 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYEQUINEIt is noticeable that grass livery, once the poor relation ofhorse ownership, is now becoming much sought after asmore horse owners turn to a more “natural” way of life fortheir horses. Social media sites are full of pleas for livery yardsthat offer “24/7” turnout all year round, or can guarantee turnout every day. This is coupled with land prices increasing andlivery yard owners needing more clients to make theirbusinesses worthwhile. Thus what land there is needs to becarefully managed, especially in wet areas and turnoutbecomes the Holy Grail. In parallel with this is a growth in “retirement livery”. Horsesare living longer, but are not always up to the job their ownerswant horses for They don’t want to see otherwise healthy, happy horses put to sleep merely on age grounds, but can’tafford stabled livery for two or more horses. So for the luckyfew with land but little else to offer liveries, a businessopportunity presents itself. The main requirements for retirement livery are usuallythat the horse lives turned out on a permanent basis, barring illness or injury, in a herd system with other horses, both mares and geldings. It can often work in areas ofcheap land but little else, such as Wales or Scotland, thoughowners may find this restrictive in visiting. Owners normallylook for field shelters or free access to safe barns, with largeor unrestricted varied field grazing and water, though ofcourse safely fenced at the perimeters. Horses are likely tobe unshod, but owners will require regular trims, dentistry, worming and inoculations plus vet attention, all of whichcosts are likely to be in addition to the basic livery fee. Adlib forage is usually provided in winter, with hard feed forthose that require it – many don’t. Supervision at leasttwice a day is essential and there should be some stablingand individual fields for ill or injured horses.Anyone offering this service should consider planningRETIRINGtypes60-61_Layout 1 16/11/2015 15:09 Page 1Call Lincoln 01522 512345 or visit wilkinchapman.co.uk^jnbg^eZplghm\abe]lieZrUnderstanding equine law means understanding horses and their owners. Specific figures show that 510,302older Britons feel lonelier on ChristmasDay than any other, while over 375,000over-75’s will be spending the day alone.Of these 41% wished they had someoneto spend the day with, and that was onlythose who felt confident enough toadmit that. In reality, the figure isprobably much higher. In many cases this is a result ofdwindling social circles, as time, illness orinfirmity claims those they once heldclose. Many elderly people still have theirpride as well, and don’t wish to be aburden to others, which only makes thetime alone all the harder. David McCullough, Royal VoluntaryService CEO, is encouraging people tothink about the elderly in theircommunity – who through no fault oftheir own likely have very small anddwindling social circles. “Spare a thoughtfor an older neighbour who might nothave any visitors this Christmas,” he says,“and if you are able to, pop round to seehow they are and have a chat and afestive drink.” The John Lewis ad this Christmas hashelped shine more attention on this issue,PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/WAVEBREAKMEDIAAll I want forCHRISTMAS Christmas is a time of cheer for many, but figures show more than35% of elderly people will be spending it alone. 65 Á62-67_Layout 1 16/11/2015 15:10 Page 2Call today for a friendly chat with Maria, Jane or Helen01482 896980Drapers Lane, Hedon, East Yorkshire HU12 8FJwww.holdernessgrange.co.uktodayLive forHOLDERNESS GRANGE LIFESTYLE VILLAGE2 bed apartments from only£70,000On Shared Ownershipwith Assisted Living atHolderness GrangeTerms and conditions apply.Holderness Grange is a superb lifestyle village offering first-class Country Club facilities set within wonderful surroundings. As well as the freedom of your own stunning 2-bed apartment, youcan further enhance your independence with our Assisted Livingpackages. For many in the community being trapped onthe moon is what being alone can feel like.Within Lincolnshire communities are opening their doors tothe elderly this Christmas, offering events and festive partiesthat will let people feel a part of the community once more.Last year in Spalding a free Christmas Day meal at the Ivocentre was held for the elderly, and even when the entiretown was hit by a surprise power cut, volunteers and nearbybusinesspeople came to the rescue to provide food for theevent.Despite the drama the event will be taking place again thisyear, with new sponsors, volunteers and generous donationscoming forth to keep the event going. Friends of the Elderly, the charity organisation based onprotecting and offering support for the vulnerable oldergeneration, is calling on companies across Lincolnshire, aswell as the rest of the UK, to do what little they can to help. They are asking landlords and pub owners to arrange events, even ones so simple as “book alone – eat in company” wherelonely adults can book Christmas dinners and be seatedtogether. While taxi firms might look to offer free journeys toand from such events if they are able. Those elderly people in care often don’thave to worry much about this, as care homesregularly organise their own Christmas eventsfor those residents who don’t go spend it withtheir own families. From dinners to games, care homes have the training and expertiserequired to not only ensure Christmas is spentin company, but that the entertainment issuitable to the audience. Across Lincolnshire there are plenty ofoptions to get exactly the care that’s right foreach person. Many old people are fiercelyindependent and wish to enjoy privacy, butrecognise that they aren’t as active as theyused to be. A valuable option in this regard is shelteredaccommodation. Residents here treat their rooms as their ownhomes, coming and going as they please, inviting guests whenthey want and engaging any carers and other services at theirown request – but communal areas mean they can enjoy eachother’s company and have someone to turn to when they requirecompanionship and security. This kind of accommodation is often used by those in search ofrespite care – they may have just left hospital or are recoveringfrom a serious illness and are aiming to get back on their feet. The safety net of sheltered accommodation can help ease thetransition back to total independence, or provide a moment toconsider the next move.Sheltered accommodation providers also often invite in non-residents to partake in luncheon clubs or special events, whichcan be a great boost for older people who may not otherwise beable to get out and about as much as they like. For many oldpeople, they are happy to continue their live on their own butwelcome the occasional outing or visit to provide a break fromthe same four walls and a chance to have a chat and a cuppawith friends. It also provides those who care for them at home achance to relax, knowing they’re in safe hands.Still, even for those who are in care, there’s nothing better forthe happiness or health of the elderly than to spend it with theirfamily. So give a thought to any elderly family members youmight have this Christmas – and perhaps more than a thought, give a seat at the Christmas table.
