For methough, the fact we can take a shortdrive to Grantham railway station anddrop down to London, to take in a showor shop in the capital, whenever themood takes us, is the added bonus.” Of course, it’s hard to believe as weenter through the couple’s electric gatesonto a private driveway, boasting adouble garage and workshop, that theland was previously just farmland. “We’dspotted the farmers field and havingundertaken a self build project oncebefore, we just knew this plot would giveus the potential to do something quiteunique,” says Matthew, “the thought ofbuilding a house to our exactspecifications, incorporating the latesttechnology and with all these great viewsof the countryside around us, was just toogood an opportunity to miss.” That vision stood the couple in goodstead and putting to good use what theylearned on their earlier project they havemanaged to create a property that is theepitome of luxury, complemented by awonderful garden, complete with its ownbeck running through the lawn. To addto the intrigue, a walk bridge leads to asuperb seating area under a woodenpergola from where the family enjoysevenings and weekends in the sun andcan relax to the sound of water cascadingover the nearby weir. It really is like ascene from a chocolate box.Inside the house, the rooms are uniquetoo. The hub of any home, of course, isBuilding their way to adream homeWe all have some sort of idea on how our dream home might look. Some of us want clevermodern design, others want sustainability, or integration with natural elements. For many of us,taking the plunge to make our dream a reality is a big step, but this month we meet a couplewho have just embarked on their second such project.12-15_Layout 1 14/11/2016 13:54 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY13HOMESthe kitchen and, as one might expectfrom the grandeur of the exterior, isspacious and well equipped. Bespokeunits by the highly regarded designer‘Peter Jackson’ leave nothing to bedesired with a tasteful blend of oak andpainted units, granite worktops and acurved centre island that, in keeping withthe character of the house, makes aunique statement. Leading off this kitchen is a breakfastarea with comfortable seating for thoseafternoon coffee moments and the wholearea is made all the more opulent byTravertine floor-tiles and an underfloorheating system that extends across thewhole of the ground floor, meaning noclumsy radiators in sight. To make themost of the gardens and allowing naturallight to suffuse the area, is a pair offrench doors leading outside. Double doors also lead to the sittingroom which enjoys more Travertine andthe same cosy family feel. Floor to ceilingwindows and french doors allow naturallight to flood in here too which makesthe whole room bright and cheerful. Adjacent to this is the main livingroom. Contemporary in design, the roomexudes opulence but loses none of itshomely appeal. A large wood burningstove crackles in the Limestone firesurround which Matthew tells us washand made by a local craftsman inRutland. “That’s the thing we love aboutbuilding a home,” explains Matthew, “it’sa chance to choose the very bestcraftsmen for a particular feature andproduce something that not only lasts fordecades to come, but also makes astatement in a room.” In the hall, more craftsmanship is onshow with an oak staircase beckoning thevisitor to explore upstairs and where sixgood sized bedrooms are arranged. The master bedroom benefits from a fitted dressing room, also by Peter Jackson, along with an en-suite bathroom, twinhand basins, shower enclosure and a fabulous freestandingVictorian Albert Bath. And one of the smaller bedrooms evenhas its own balcony. As Matthew explains, “When it comes to build quality, weweren’t prepared to compromise on any aspect, so thisupper level has the same block and beam flooring that wefitted downstairs so there’s never any of those annoyingcreaks or bumps that reverberate through the house when amember of the family is upstairs,” then he adds “you mightalso notice, there’s no radiators up here either as we alsoincluded underfloor heating to this level too.” Up on the second floor there’s a further 750 square metresof space which is currently divided into a large bedroom andseparate hobby room, offering substantial amounts ofstorage. Emma and Matthew regularly take advantage ofthese rooms, being the highest vantage point in the houseand arguably one of the cosiest. The attention to detail that has been lavished on thishouse is evident throughout, right through to the solarthermal panels, and modern materials throughout whichshould ensure the house is economical to run too; althoughto look at the property you’d think it’d been here far longerthan it actually has. There can be nothing better than the blank canvas of aself build, when it comes to investing in a property. From thehighest-quality workmanship to smart tech such asrenewables and home automation, starting from scratch isthe most straightforward and cost-effective way to attain top-spec features but, if like me you lack the, vision, or patience tosource: the land, materials, trades, and attain all the necessaryplanning permissions then don’t beat yourself up - just find ahouse that someone else has gone through that pain barrier. Asa matter of fact, this very property can be bought for a mere£550,000, as Emma and Matthew, inspired by their latestcreation, have now embarked on another adventure in theworld of self build. For further details or to arrange a viewing contact the agents:Savilles Lincoln, 01522 508 90812-15_Layout 1 14/11/2016 13:54 Page 416 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOMES1) Christmas DecorationsThis alluring selection of decorations from rigby &mac range from retro to arty and everything inbetween. 2) Christmas Garland Not just for Christmas – this garland from Sue Ryderis a charming addition to your decorations, but withits wintery design it will see you through to March. 3) Nativity Advent Calendar Let’s not go forgetting the true meaning of Christmasin a haze of mince pies, mulled wine and wrappingwith this contemporary nativity from Sisters Guild. 4) Rosehip Christmas Wreath It just wouldn’t be Christmas without a wreath or twoand this alternative option from The ContemporaryHome is traditional and elegant. 5) Ladder Christmas TreeBring a touch of the Christmas market to a bedroomor bathroom with this rope ladder effect tree fromThe Little Picture Company. 6) Pinecone TreesThese Nordic inspired pinecone trees from Grace &Glory evoke the magic of Christmas with a lightdusting of twinkling snow. Currently living in Lincoln, she’s a self-employed business consultant,part-time artist and mum to three girls. It’s interesting how many creatives arepersuaded away from pursuing the arts infavour of more ‘useful’ endeavours. Thesame is true for Jenny who in her youthwas steered away from art and towardsmore academic pursuits, on account ofthere being no obvious career paths foran artist. Coupled with a distinct lack ofcareers guidance, this made her turn herback on art and she studied biology atuniversity instead. With long hours spentin library, this has become a decision shehas come to regret. But more often thannot, Jenny was drawing pictures insteadof studying. From university she diversified intoaccountancy and business support, believing these to provide a goodspringboard to a variety of careers. Sincethen, she has had an assortment ofexperience and worked in a broad rangeof work environments and managementfunctions. For several years, she heldsenior management positions withinfinance, business support, housing, economic and community development. With the birth of her third daughter, and the desire to be there for all three ofher young daughters, Jenny became ahome-based, self-employed businessconsultant and created ArtisanManagement Consultancy in January2004. To complement her practicalexperience, she has an MSc in BusinessProject Management and is a member ofThe countyon canvasWe sat down with local artist Jenny Reynolds whoselandscapes need to be seen to be believed. the Institute of Consulting.Despite being entrenched in thebusiness world for many years, andhaving no formal art qualifications, Jennyhas retained a lifelong passion forpainting and drawing and, in recentyears, has taken this to the next level bytaking on private painting commissions. She would like to realise her long-termambition of becoming a commercialartist and welcomes the opportunity toshowcase her work. Her early work was predominantlyfocussed on pencil drawings andwatercolour paintings, but she hasreluctantly progressed to oil painting. Itwas a fortuitous move as it has sincebecome her favourite medium. The painting was for alady whose father had recently passedaway. Through meditation, she goes to aplace in her mind where she meets him inspirit, a place that is theirs alone. Sheasked Jenny to convey a visualrepresentation, so that she can connectwith him at any time. It was a commissionJenny found tremendously rewarding, tobe able to paint something of suchemotional value to her client. Her inspiration has always beenunderpinned with a great fascinationwith how sunlight filters throughclouds to create dramatic skies andhow it plays on landscapes. A look atany of her paintings reveals theintricate and subtle details of how lightbreaks through trees or hangs spectralin the air.
