Perhaps that cutepuppy grew up bigger than expected, orthe food and vet bills are too much tokeep up with. But so many of the dogs inneed of a new home are getting long inthe tooth and are often passed up foryounger dogs. At a rescue centre you see dogs of allshapes, sizes, and ages - all needing JerryGreen Dog Rescue’s skilled support inslightly different ways. There are dayswhen the charity is caring for tinynewborn pups, then on to training upboisterous adolescent youngsters whoneed to learn the ropes and then, ofcourse, caring for our elderly dogs whohave found themselves in our care. Olderdogs have usually spent their whole livescosy and well-loved in family homes andthrough various circumstances havefound themselves needing our help. The older dogs the charity cares for canremind you of the dogs you have athome that aren’t the lively and rowdyyoung pups they once were and howspecial the bond is between you, nowthat you really understand each other. They’re your old friend, as well as yourbest friend and no one can understandyou like they do (or know so many ofyour secrets). It’s very rewarding tomake up a seriously comfy, snugly-warm bed for an old, arthritic dogwho truly appreciates the blanket youcover him with to keep him cosy whilehe sleeps. Never underestimate howyour dog’s happiness, safety andcomfort can make youhappy too. Meeting anolder dog in a rescuecentre is anexperience oftenextremely underrated. The cost of running itsfive centres across Lincolnshire, Yorkshireand Nottinghamshire will only continueto rise, meaning that donations arecritical to recusing and rehoming strayand abandoned dogs. One of the best ways to get involved isby sponsoring a kennel. To mark asponsorship, the charity will display aplaque on the respective kenneldisplaying said person’s name and anyother detail. The charity said thatsponsors often want to remember adearly departed pet or a beloved reality. The beauty of this is that people canmake a positive impact on the dog’s livesif they themselves are unable to adopt, something Jerry Green welcomes.Another way of getting involved in thismanner is by volunteering. Though timerestraints might stymie the amount ofhours one can spend helping out aroundone of its centres, any time spared iswelcome and will have a positive effect. The Europeanrobin is one such example. The smallsongbird is frequently found adorningChristmas trees, greetings cardsand, of course, the gardenfence and feeder. After scouting out asuitable spot for a scoff, the robin will return allthe way through thewinter. With its flamecoloured throat, it’simpossible to mistakethe bird for any other, though you can tell itapart also by its songwhich it serenades us with allthrough winter. But whereexactly did this festive connectioncome from? Well, Victorian postmenused to be referred to as robins on account oftheir red tunics. The posties delivered greetings cardsand, ipso facto, the birds became a seasonal staple onstamps and cards since the mid-19th century. And therethey’ve endured, surpassing the nativity itself as icons ofThere are few symbols as enduring of Christmas and thewinter chill than the robin, with its iconic breast of redcontrasting with the bare trees, snow and ice. Lincolnshirewildlifetraditional Christmas drift further and further intomemory. Going back to Jesus for a minute, legend claims thatwhen the old miracle worker was in the middle of beingcrucified, a robin brown in colour flew to hisside and sang in his ear to sooth hispain. The blood from Christ’swounds stained the bird’sbreast red and so all robinssince bear the mark of hisblood. The robin often comesout top on polls of theUK’s best loved birds,so it’s safe to say thatthe British reserve acertain affection for theredbreast. But the feelingisn’t mutual across theBloc, with the birds shot forsport or food. It’s a perilous time fromNovember through to spring and sorobins will set aside any pretensions of pickyeating and chow down on what they’re given. Most anykitchen scraps will suffice, and gluttony abounds this timeof year, so why not spare a thought for the robin thisChristmas and share the good tidings. © Shutterstock / Neil Burton 78-79_Layout 1 15/11/2017 11:47 Page 1© Shutterstock / Ian D Nicol 78-79_Layout 1 15/11/2017 11:47 Page 2Next >
