Quite why our county’s namesake has become synonyms with this time of year isn’t easy to define. Perhaps it’s the gothic cathedral, the period architecture or the annual Christmas market. But maybe, there really is a magic in the air. The reasons for visiting Lincoln become abundantly clear in December where the streets are daubed in decorations, and shop displays come alive with lights and coloured tinsel. Fortunately, the nights draw in earlier so all that festivity can be enjoyed even on the commute home. Not taking the time to stand and stare, to quote the W. H. Davies poem, would be an unfortunate oversight, however, as the city has so much to offer, especially this time of year. But regardless of Christmas, the historic Cathedral Quarter is a must-see for culture and for getting away from the big brands and into independent, artisan and quirky retailers. Yet if you’ve only ever seen the high street, then you’ve not really visited Lincoln at all. Move along The Strait for an assortment of indie retailers, climb up the cobbles of Steep Hill – previously voted ‘Britain’s Great Street’ – and pop into the cluster of tea rooms, vintage boutiques and more, before reaching the beautiful Bailgate area with its specialist shops and restaurants, which 60 Á 58-61.qxp_Layout 1 13/11/2019 11:56 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 59 LINCOLN © Shutterstock/chrisdorney 58-61.qxp_Layout 1 13/11/2019 11:56 Page 2Next >
