< Previous70 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY FAMILY BUSINESS - JOE ROE GRIMSBY S ince John Roe Motor Sales first opened its doors fifty years ago, heritage has shaped the way the business is run. The Toyota franchise, which was awarded just two years after John Roe founded the business in 1969, invites customers to become a part of the family. Now driven by grandson Tom Roe, who took on the business after father Paul passed away unexpectedly at just 48, John Roe Toyota has been moulded by family values, instilled in each generation. These can be felt throughout the business and extend to a loyal customer base. Operating three dealerships across Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe, John Roe Toyota attracts both local and nationwide customers and is renowned for repeat custom. Rather than simply inviting customers to buy a car, when the business asks customers to join the family, it reinforces its commitment to the highest standards of care and service in the motor industry. A combination of strong values, sustainable outlook and commitment – traits often associated with family-run companies – has ensured longevity of the business through three generations, a feat which just 12% of family-owned businesses achieve. Staff also say its success is down to understanding and involvement. The family-run business prides itself not only in its delivery of top customer service in the car sales industry, but also in its support for local communities, project and individuals. Along with continual involvement in national events for charity, John Roe Toyota makes time to give back to the community. In recent years, John Roe Grimsby has raised funds for a hydrotherapy pool at Humberston Park Special School, the Hull John Roe team has taken on the Three Peaks challenge for 5 Senses, a Hull- based charity for vulnerable adults, and Scunthorpe John Roe has secured funding for St Luke’s Primary, a purpose- built day school for children with special education needs and disabilities. Something held very close to the hearts of John Roe staff is sponsoring Waltham Tea Garden’s annual Bikeathon, which launched in 2012 in memory of Paul Roe and Andy Tofton. Each year, over 100 cyclists take to North East Lincolnshire roads to remember Paul, who died after a short illness, and close- friend Andy, who passed away a month later after a two-year battle with lung cancer. The willingness of Tom to continue the Roe legacy after this family trauma is an admirable merit to the family and the business, says Matthew Arliss, General Manager at John Roe Grimsby. “To be associated with a family group like John Roe who have such a history in the town is a real honour. I have lived in Grimsby 50 years of family-run business Walk into a John Roe Toyota dealership and you’ll feel the passion, commitment and comfort of the family culture, passed on through three generations of the Roe family. 70-71.qxp_Layout 1 13/11/2019 12:00 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 71 FAMILY BUSINESS - JOE ROE GRIMSBY all my life and recently joined the John Roe family after 19 years with another local dealership. It’s great to be a part of a business that puts family and customers at its heart.” Over the last 50 years, John Roe Toyota has had to evolve with the changes of the automotive industry. With convenience becoming more and more of a necessity, recent changes include implementing a collection and delivery service along with home visits, to ensure service comes first for both new and existing customers. “John Roe Toyota goes above and beyond for customer service. Nothing is too much trouble, and they get just the right balance between a professional and friendly service. Staff make sure you have all the information necessary to make an informed decision about a car, and guide you every step of the way. My experiences have always been positive and I can’t thank them enough.” – John Roe Grimsby customer The franchise has also adapted to the increase in electrification, with Toyota leading the way for the future of alternative fuel vehicles. An ever- increasing focus on hybrid has meant Toyota technology has become second- to-none, with impressive economy figures and important environmental benefits. Adding sustainability to their list of values, John Roe moves from strength to strength, and the family ethos that the company was built on has remained at its very core. Without its employees and its family culture, many argue that it would not be where it is today. To find out more, visit www.johnroecars.co.uk. Volvo is known for making comfortable cars. The new V60 is no different. The cabin is pleasing to the eye, and the seats are supportive. As estate cars go, this is a handsome one, and it’s a practical vehicle. You get 529-litres of space in the boot, but this expands to 1441-litres with the rear seats folded. The T4 version of the V60 is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine, hooked up to a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission. This union delivers a refined, speedy drive. The Swedish-made machine has luxury running through it like a stick of Brighton rock - and safety is top-notch. The V60 T4 Momentum Plus model is a car worth aiming for then, if you have a family, or you need the cargo capacity of an estate car. 72 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COUNTY MOTORING 72-75.qxp_Layout 1 13/11/2019 12:02 Page 1Fast Facts: Volvo V60 T4 Momentum Plus Automatic • Max speed: 137mph • 0-62 mph: 7.2s • Combined MPG: 38.7mpg • Engine layout: 1969cc 4-cylinder turbo petrol • Max. power (PS): 190 • CO2: 157g/km • Price: £34,685 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 73 COUNTY MOTORING 72-75.qxp_Layout 1 13/11/2019 12:02 Page 274 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COUNTY MOTORING It may not be the most attractive car, but it has flair. Sorry, we had to get that one in. In all fairness, this is a functional SUV, but the C5 Aircross does have 'Marmite' looks. Inside, the new model is roomy with enveloping, high seats. This helps give you a good view of the road, but the chairs don't provide as much leg support as they could. After 100 miles, we were happy to get out and stretch our pins. That said, the French car’s seats, along with Citroen’s excellent suspension, filter out road disturbances well. And you are not short- changed on the tech-front, because the car is equipped with a large digital instrument cluster and touchscreen. The C5 Aircross also features 20 driver assistance systems and advanced connectivity. The drive is pleasant, and the six-speed manual gearbox is smooth - only the slightly heavy clutch niggles in stop-start traffic. The boot has a useful square opening, and with 625-litres of cargo capacity, and 1694-litres with the seats down, tip runs will never be an issue. Being a diesel, this model is economical, too. Kia claims a combined average of 57.6mpg is possible. All that for just over £20,000 isn’t bad – plus you get a seven-year warranty. Under the bonnet, a 3.8-litre lump lurks. It’s a re-engineered, upgraded version of the engine fitted in the Quattroporte GTS. It delivers 580hp and has been developed in cooperation with Ferrari. The Levante chassis has been meticulously tuned to handle the higher power output, providing an exhilarating driving experience with no compromise in terms of comfort and safety. What’s more, the Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) system has been incorporated for the first time in a Levante for superlative driving dynamics, greater active safety and even more thrilling performance. Indeed, the unmistakable Levante design has reached new levels of sportiness in this top of the line model. The restyling is mainly focused on the lower front fascia and the rear bumper, but includes carbon fibre design cues and 22-inch forged aluminium “Orione” wheels. These are the largest ever fitted on a Maserati. The Trofeo is also the first Levante model equipped with Full LED adaptive headlights. Inside, designers have come up with elegant ways to create a distinctive environment. The sculpted sport seats feature a premium full-grain “Pieno Fiore” leather with a genuinely soft feel. The Levante Trofeo made its World Premiere at the New York International Auto Show and is manufactured at the Mirafiori (Turin, Italy) plant. And after being the first to experience it in the UK, albeit in left-hand drive press models, we can confirm this is a car you’ll want. In our opinion, the Trofeo is the purest expression of the GT philosophy in the SUV segment. Mind you, you’ll need £124,900 to afford it. What price luxury and performance though, eh? This is the first Levante built around a V8 engine, and it’s one of the fastest SUVs ever built, boasting a top speed of 186mph. 76-77.qxp_Layout 1 13/11/2019 12:05 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 77 COUNTY MOTORING 76-77.qxp_Layout 1 13/11/2019 12:05 Page 2Boston Thursday 28 – Saturday 30 November Once Upon a Christmas Past, Blackfriars Theatre & Arts Centre Blackfriars Theatre Academy’s final show of 2019 is a festive treat not to be missed.
