< Previouslatest news £21k pa savings for Somercotes Academy following ground breaking environmental project Somercotes Academy has invested in a ground-breaking environmental scheme which will slash energy bills and reduce its carbon footprint. A heat pump, thought to be the first of its kind in northern Lincolnshire, will replace the 31-year-old system to help provide the heating and hot water in a £520,000 scheme. Lincolnshire Gateway Academies Trust has secured the funding from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) as part of its Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, delivered by Salix Finance. The scheme aims to put the public sector at the forefront of decarbonising buildings in the UK. The school has also installed 359 solar panels at the site and swopped out all internal lights to LED. The project is expected to save more than 3,000 tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide being emitted into the earth’s atmosphere over its 25-year lifespan. Trust Chief Executive Officer Martin Brown said unpredictable and increasing costs of oil, together with the opportunity of funding, prompted the move. “Somercotes is our only Academy where heating is provided by oil,” he said. “We’re proud to be installing energy efficient, air source heat pump technology and showing our students we are reducing our environmental impact, something as young people they feel very strongly about. “The scheme will also help with rising energy costs. Oil for the old boiler system costs around £20,000 annually, expected to rise to between £25,000 and £30,000 this winter.” The air source heat pump is estimated to save almost £9,000 a year and the solar panels more than £12,000 through on-site generation. “With all the improvements, we’re anticipating a cost saving of £21,000 annually, money which can be used to benefit students elsewhere in the Academy,” said Mr Brown. New permanent residency confirmed for Lincoln Community Grocery, supported by £19m Town Deal Lincoln Community Grocery, supported by the Government’s Be Lincoln, Town Deal and in partnership with the Message Trust, will re-locate to a permanent premises in January after a successful first year. The Store of Stories project provides low cost, locally supplied surplus or waste food that would otherwise go to landfill to Lincoln residents, with the aim to improve mental health and people’s budgets. The store recently celebrated its first anniversary at Central Methodist Church on Lincoln High Street and will shortly relocate to Beaumont Manor. Central Methodist Church offered its building as the pilot venue for the grocery, which has also aimed to address issues of food poverty and support communities by delivering free courses to improve mental health and skillsets. While the Central Methodist Church has provided a home for the last year, renovation on the Grade II listed building Beaumont Manor has now begun, thanks to £226,000 funding from the Lincoln Town Deal. This funding forms part of the Be Lincoln Town Deal, which has seen £19 million awarded to the city to drive economic regeneration and deliver long-term economic and productivity growth. The Town Deal also aims to address food poverty issues, supporting clean growth through the harnessing of ‘waste’ food and helping local people build resilience. Simon Hawking, Chief Executive of Acts Trust, said: “Lincoln Community Grocery goes beyond food. People are looking for smarter and greener ways to shop while saving money, the grocery provides that service. We also offer free courses based around cooking, life skills and financial budgeting to support the local community and wellbeing of local residents.” 06-11.qxp_Layout 1 15/11/2022 09:12 Page 5LUXURY LIVING IN LINCOLNSHIRE With a guaranteed cash buyer, you can make your move up the property ladder. Surrounded by open countryside and perfectly secluded thanks to a wealth of trees, The Oaks presents spacious accommodation on a sizeable, mature and peaceful plot hosting cleverly planned gardens, patio areas and a layout inside that flows wonderfully through rooms that are large yet cosy. The current owners have enjoyed the abode since 2008, initially attracted to its prime location on the outskirts of Fotherby, while being within just a few minutes of all its facilities and sitting well away from the A16, but still offering easy access to the road. “It’s a really nice place to live. A fun and happy house,” they added. Plenty of work has been completed over the past 14 years to create the home that stands today, however, from changing the lounge considerably to make the best use of the space to constructing the lovely gazebo outside as a project during the pandemic. Taking a tour of the home, one will begin by passing through its electric gates and wandering up a gravelled driveway that sweeps across the rear of the property and leads to the detached double garage. A brick built porchway, with a uPVC double glazed window to the front and a sheltered seating area and log store, guides you into the entrance hall, holding a return staircase to the first floor, with inset remote controlled LED lighting, as well as wooden beams to the ceiling and feature brick pillars which make for an extra touch of visual intrigue next to neutral paint choices. The entrance hall also has a radiator, inset spotlights, and a uPVC double glazed high level window to the front. To the right of the entrance is the kitchen, an ideal entertaining and family space that flows out into a conservatory and onto two patio areas. It is fitted with a solid oak kitchen with soft close doors and drawers and has a range of base, Ideal for entertaining Ideal for entertaining A hidden gem on the outskirts of Fotherby, The Oaks is a capacious but cosy house with areas inside and out that offer a fabulous flow for entertaining. 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 15/11/2022 09:14 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 13 HOMES 14 Á drawer and wall units with underlighting, pan drawers, double opening corner units, a pull out spice drawer, glazed display units and a breakfast bar area. There is a one and a half bowl ceramic sink with mixer tap and drainer, a tiled floor, and two radiators, while further integration of a wooden beam and two brick pillars add extra character. An abundance of appliances are included in the kitchen with the integrated Fisher and Paykel double drawer dishwasher, LG American style fridge freezer with water dispenser, Samsung wine fridge, under counter fridge, and Rangemaster Range cooker with five ring induction hob and matching Rangemaster chimney style extractor fan in a deep red hue for a pop of colour. Furthermore, a uPVC double glazed sash window to the rear, uPVC double glazed window to the front and uPVC double glazed sliding doors to the conservatory flood the room with light. The room also provides the opportunity for a kitchen island to be installed, with a power socket centrally located under the kitchen floor tiles. Moving into the conservatory, overlooking the gardens from all angles, uPVC double glazed patio doors open out to a vast patio to the rear, linking to the games room and to the front, allowing access onto a decked seating area with mains water connection for a hot tub. A thermotech reflective polycarbonate roof is fitted along with a remote controlled ceiling light and fan, radiators and a remote controlled Airforce climate control system, enabling the conservatory to be used throughout the year. Wired in speakers are fitted too, together with three wall lights and tiled flooring. Returning to the entrance hall, a shower room can be used to the back, with a close coupled WC, pedestal sink with mixer tap and tiled splashback, corner shower cubicle with a rainfall power shower, tiled flooring, radiator, uPVC double glazed window to the rear, and built in storage cupboard with shelving. Travelling to the left of the 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 15/11/2022 09:14 Page 214 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES entrance, the remainder of the ground floor awaits, starting with the expansive lounge. A beamed ceiling, with beams rumoured to have come from the officers’ mess at an RAF base, and central brick fireplace with open fire, see the room ooze warmth despite its size, while natural light streams into the room from two uPVC double glazed windows to the rear, one to the front, and two full length feature windows to the side. There are also three radiators and three wall light points in the room. From the lounge a door leads you to the dining room, ready to accommodate a large dinner party. Solid oak flooring and wooden panelling to the walls to half height can be found here alongside dual aspect uPVC double glazed windows to either side, a radiator, coving, wooden beam and two brick pillars. The dining room connects straight into what the owners note is the most popular space in the house, the games room. This room has solid oak flooring, two radiators, coving, coloured LED remote controlled spotlights, a wooden beam and two brick pillars, continuing the character of the rest of the home. Currently hosting a pool table in its centre, uPVC double glazed French doors open it onto the large patio area, which links back around to the conservatory. Off the games room an office, utility room, and WC complete the ground floor. Ascending to the first floor landing, with its radiator, loft access, spotlights, and walk in airing cupboard, five bedrooms can be explored, including one with an en suite and the spacious master suite. The master suite starts with a double bedroom with a uPVC double glazed window to the side and a Velux window to the front, cast iron feature fireplace, sloping ceilings, spotlights, two radiators, and dado rail. This feeds into a dressing room with solid wooden flooring, two double wardrobes, Velux window to the side, access to eaves storage, a heated towel radiator, sloping ceiling, wall light, and recessed display shelf, and ends with a modern ensuite with free- standing roll top claw foot bath with telephone style shower, shower cubicle with mixer power shower and spotlight extractor fan, two wash basins set on a tiled work surface with mixer taps and mirrored cupboard above with 16 Á 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 15/11/2022 09:14 Page 312-17.qxp_Layout 1 15/11/2022 09:14 Page 416 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES Email: info@burtonairconditioningltd.co.uk www.burtonairconditioningltd Call now for more information DOMESTIC INSTALLATIONS ARE NOW ZERO VAT RATED inset lighting, close coupled WC, fully tiled walls, solid wooden flooring, two heated towel radiators, sloping ceiling, and Velux window to the side. Showing that the house has even more potential, the owner previously had plans drawn up to extend into the attic space to provide another two bedrooms. Stepping outside of the home, there are lawned gardens of just under 1 acre (sts), myriad mature trees including Willow and Chestnut, and a fire pit. A decked area can be accessed by steps and is edged by brick pillars with inset trellising, plants and LED lighting. The gazebo here is the owners’ favourite aspect of the gardens, currently set up ideally for welcoming guests all year round and through evenings, surrounded by lights and featuring a chandelier, big table, heater, Bluetooth speaker, and a fridge. Additionally the property has a raised patio with central pergola featuring a built in speaker system, and a brick barbecue. A wooden workshop and metal shed, as well as sweet spots with statues can also be discovered. Moreover, a plethora of birds, muntjacs, foxes, badgers, and even a couple of red deer have enjoyed the property. “There’s room for whatever one might want in the gardens,” the owners noted. Indeed one could even follow the lead of neighbours and install a swimming pool. The Oaks is now up for sale with Hunters for £750,000, with the owners looking to retire to a warmer climate. 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 15/11/2022 09:14 Page 5LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 17 A S LOCAL AS IT GETS! This month we look at the work of Ryder, a mystery artist who prefers people to focus on the art instead of the artist. R yder is one such an artist, but where Banksy’s works are confrontation, charged with socio- political power, Ryder instead offers escape, a whimsical, welcoming enchanted space cast off the difficulties ourselves. That’s prudent now more than ever given the state of the country and the numerous challenges we’re facing. Ryder keeps their identity a closely guarded secret, offering no backstory, no personal details, nothing beyond their artworks. In doing so, they separate creator from creation and force audiences to focus entirely on the artwork. Casting aside the heavy weight of preconception, we gain the freedom to form our own opinions on the work. As we wander through this magical world, shrouded in mystery, it is the art which becomes the narrator, rather than the creator of the work. Far from gimmicky, it’s liberating. ‘Artist’ is an all-encompassing term that wraps many a discipline up in a cultural blanket of human expression and 18-19.qxp_Layout 1 15/11/2022 09:15 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 19 ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRE progress. Occasionally, an individual emerges that blurs the lines between these disciplines, breathing narrative into visual art and illustration into the twists and turns of fictional writing. In 2002, the world-famous Pompidou Centre in Paris devoted a headline exhibition not to an artist but a to literary critic, and that critic was Roland Barthes. For the purposes of penetrating the veneer of mystique around Ryder, we must take as our reference text Barthes’ critical essay entitled ‘Death of the Author’. In it, Barthes surmises that one must disengage with the author to appreciate text in its truest form. In essence, he asserts that we as an audience have subjectivity imposed upon us – that our knowledge of an author, painter or poet ultimately colours our opinion of, and attitude towards, the piece itself. He urges us to look beyond the constraints of the simple answer, the easy route, and to judge each creation on its own merit. The more thought one gives to this notion, the more weight Barthes’ argument carries; what a tragedy if one were unable simply to appreciate the beauty of a Van Gogh without searching for signs of madness within its composition. ‘Death of The Author’ promotes empowerment and gives us back control; no dictatorial biography, instead a metaphorical blank canvas for us, the audience, to take charge and form our own opinions. Thus, we come to this collection. Ryder is no more, no less than a name on a piece of paper. No artist biography to influence your impressions, no collection overview to police your critique, just the art laid bare. THE LITTLE RED GALLERY Love art?
