So, the newGT 86 sports car unveiled at the Tokyomotor show proved one of the busieststands we’ve seen in a long time. Thegood news is it’ll be on sale in thecounty’s showrooms by June 2012.Conceived as an entirely driver-focused machine and said to deliverthe core qualities of a classic sports carexperience. The GT 86 is built on anew platform, with a highlyaerodynamic bodyshell stretched tightover the car’s mechanical elements. The engine is the result of a jointToyota and Subaru developmentprogramme that brings together theirtechnical know-how and mutualpassion for sports cars. Toyota has added its D-4S injectiontechnology to Subaru’s new, horizontally opposed, 1998cc four-cylinder boxer engine and is designedto increasing power and torque acrossa wide range of engine speeds withoutsacrificing fuel efficiency orenvironmental performance. The manual offers quick, preciseshifts using a tactile, short-throw lever;the automatic transmission can becontrolled using paddle shiftsmounted on the steering wheel. It has rear wheel drive via a limitedslip differential to give the bestpossible grip in all driving conditions.Personally we cant wait to get ourhands on one.The Juke Nismo, is Nissan’s take onwhat a premium sports version of thehugely successful compact crossovershould look like. While currently only at Conceptstage, Nissan say it “magnifies thestandard car’s unique mix of compactcar agility, coupé-like responses andSUV strength”As Andy Palmer says, “The JukeNismo Concept takes that idea to thenext level. It’s energetic, distinctiveand highly desirable.”Finished in signature Nismo coloursof pearl white with red highlights, theJuke Nismo Concept wears a body kitcreated by Nismo’s aerodynamicspecialists whose skill has been honedperfecting racecar bodywork. And as on a racecar, the Juke NismoConcept body kit is designed not justto look good, but also to bedynamically highly efficient. Newparts include revised bumpers frontand rear, wider fenders and sill sideskirts.Even the shape of the door mirrorshas been altered to enhance the car’saerodynamic performance and reducefront and rear lift without increasingdrag. This reduction in lift means thecontact patch of the tyres has beenincreased to improve grip, which isfurther enhanced by the arrival ofstylish new 19-inch alloy wheels. The chassis has also been loweredand stiffened while the 1.6-litre directinjection turbo gasoline engine hasbeen uprated to deliver more powerand performance. Dates formainstream production however areanyone’s guess. With200PS and 151lb/ft maximum torquein a car weighing just 1220kg, the BRZhas been designed for maximum – andaccessible – driving enjoyment. The overall styling – instantlyrecognisable as a Subaru – conveys thecar’s fun-to-drive attitude. At the front, the low-slung enginefacilitates a low, purposeful bonnetline, accentuating the bulging frontwheel arches. Signature designfeatures give the car a fresh, strikingappearance. The interior of the BRZ is designedto ensure that the driver enjoys thebehind-the-wheel experience to thefull. Theintention is for both horse and rider toachieve a rhythmical, balanced stylewhile also developing a clean, accuratejumping technique – in an attempt tocombine the excitement of cross-country with the accuracy of showjumping. It’s particularly valuable foryoung and developing riders as thefences aren’t as intimidating as solidfences for horse or rider, but theyrequire balance, skill and respect inorder to jump them cleanly. The new Eventer’s Challenge will beheld later this year. Attracting some ofthe leading names in the eventingworld, this innovative competition isaimed at riders competing at BEIntermediate level and above and willbe held at the JumpCross headquartersat Grange Farm in Wittering nearPeterborough on 26th June.Riders will take part in a two roundcompetition over a course of fencesranging from 3ft 6in to 3ft 9in oncross country type terrain. Thismeans that when new paths are created, local authoritiesare being reminded that horse riders will need to becatered for in addition to walkers and cyclists, and thenew funding available will ensure that there can be roomfor all. The British Horse Society has argued about theimportance of space for riders to the government in thepast, and the organisation’s chairman Dr Phil Wadey says,“After years of patient campaigning, our fight to securefor equestrians the sort of provision previously availableonly to walkers and cyclists is beginning to pay off.”Riders themselves could also benefit from the launch ofa new Smartphone app. HorseRider SOS has beendesigned and developed by experienced Horsemen with apassion for keeping the sport safe. Essentially, theapplication is an alerting tool that’s able to send a panicmessage containing your GPS position to your emergencycontact in the case of a fall or accident. Riders activate theapp before they head off, and should they becomeunseated, injured or unconscious, the software recognisesthat are no longer moving and will send a message to achosen contact, collecting data to establish your exactGPS co-ordinates, allowing rescue and emergency servicesto find them quickly. The rider can decide how long it isbefore the message is sent – so it won’t go off if yousimply stop for a break – and it can be overridden ifthere’s no problem. The app is available now on Androidand iPhones and could make a huge difference for thosewho ride alone.DVDs to be won!Riders can now study and practice Linda Parelli’srevolutionary Game of Contact, Pat Parelli’s legendaryColt Starting system, and savvy Hacking tools andtechniques from the comfort of their own home.Linda’s Game of Contact is available on DVD or Blu-ray and includes a study manual set which helpsachieve ultimate mental, emotional, and physicalcollection, teaching you how to solve problems relatedto contact or help you and your horse learn contact forthe first time.In Pat Parelli’s Colt Starting DVD or Blu-ray, Patexplains how to gain confidence and respect, barebackmounting, saddling, passenger lessons, first rides andachieving the different gaits with a newly started horse. On the new Hit the Trail DVD or Blu-ray, Pat, Lindaand their students take on a hack through the Coloradowilderness, explaining all you need to know before youset out on a ride, then how to put your new foundskills to use when you need them most. These three new courses are packed with informationto help you be safe, have fun, and advance yourhorsemanship skills.
