It used to belong to a SaudiPrince, and it came to this country ina pile of boxes on the deck of a tanker. There were bits missing and bits ofother cars in the boxes as well. Theupholstery fabric was falling apart, and the seat cushions were turning todust. The sun can be very harsh overthere. It took me nine years to restoreit. What makes it special?Well, it’s a great looker, for a start. But the engine’s a V8 Tipo 33 – andGrand Prix engine, and it’s in race spec. With exhausts at the sides it makes asuperb noise; just as you’d expect aGrand Prix car to sound. That meansthere isn’t another car like this in theworld. It’s unique. You should hear itin a tunnel. In Germany they call it theBlue Arrow!Did you have to learn the restorationskills specially? Not at all. I run Trentside Classic andSportscars, and specialist classic carrestoration is what I do. I couldn’t havetaken this project on otherwise. What’s it like to drive?Wonderful. It makes a fabulous noise, for a start – but it’s a Grand Prix carunderneath, so needs to be treated withrespect, even though it’s perfectly legalto drive on the road. When these carswere new they went better than theystopped, so I’ve fitted Ferrari brakes. Is this the original colour scheme? No, it used to be red, but my wife Valsaid she didn’t want another red car,and she chose this blue instead. It’s a Ferrari colour.Does it travel far? We’ve been to Germany in it. Theautobahns were fantastic. Becausethere’s no speed limit I was able to getit up to 150 miles an hour or so, whichwas fine until a VW Polo pulled out infront of me doing just 70. I wasthankful for the brakes, because Ialmost stood the car on its nose toavoid it.What would one like this cost us?Well, there isn’t another like thisanywhere, and this one’s certainly notfor sale, so you wouldn’t be able to buyone. A standard Montreal would costfrom about £20,000 to £35,000 ormore, depending on condition. My other car’s a…Do you havea very special classic car, something really out of the ordinary? If you’d like to be featuredin this column, emails.pearcey@blmgroup.co.ukLots of Lincolnshire motorists cherish cars from bygone motoring eras. The result is that you’ll sometimessee something a little different on the roads, a car that will cause comment amongst your passengers, andperhaps even prompt someone to say: “My dad had one of those!” We spoke to Mal Nicholson ofScunthorpe about his 1972 race-spec Alfa Romeo Montreal.092-104:Layout 1 7/12/12 13:51 Page 10102 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYJack, born in Bassingham, was the firstBritish winner of this event since 2006,and as it’s long been considered ashowcase for stars of the future, all eyesare now on him to make his mark on aneven bigger stage. Now nineteen, Jack has been racingsince he was nine, starting in karts – infact, he won every KartingChampionship he ever entered. He thenspent two years in Formula BMWEurope, and earned second place in their2010 Championship, before graduatingto British Formula 3 where he hasenjoyed his greatest success so far aspart of the Carlin Racing team.Jack was crowned the 2012 Championafter two stunning lights to flagsvictories at the last round of the seasonat Donington, which meant he endedthe campaign with seven race wins and319 points. Such was his skill he wastextbook start to race one from pole andimmediately began pulling away fromthe second placed driver – after two lapshe had pulled out a 1.5 second gap, andafter four laps the gap was up to 2.5seconds. Jack continued to put in a seriesof spectacular laps and by lap fourteenhe was four seconds from his nearestrival. After twenty laps of racing, Jackclinched victory and moved to within asingle point of the Championship leader. For race two, Jack lined up in eighthposition for the reverse grid. Makinganother strong start, he was up to sixthby the end of lap one which, after thesafety car came out, was the position inwhich he crossed the finish line, takingthe Championship lead. Race three onSunday afternoon saw a dramatic climaxto the Championship with the daylightfading quickly and Jack knowing that awin would clinch the title. Lining up inJACKgo, go, goes for gloryTo the names of Senna, Hakkinen, Piquet and Stewart, we cannow add Harvey – as Lincolnshire racing driver Jack Harvey hasbecome this year’s British Formula 3 championnever out of the top three of the DriversChampionship all season. Jack says, “It’shard to put into words what the victorymeans to me. It has been an amazingyear and to win the British F3Championship is a dream come true.”Despite his remarkable consistency, theChampionship was not a foregoneconclusion as the penultimate round atSilverstone was a serious disappointmentfor Jack, after he received post-racepenalties that deprived him of twopodium finishes – which meant he wasback to third in the standings and had a23 point deficit to make up at Donington. However Jack was dominant atDonington from the off, posting thequickest lap time in free practice. Hethen went on to match this pace inqualifying where he secured a doublepole position for races one and three. On the Saturday afternoon, Jack made a092-104:Layout 1 7/12/12 13:51 Page 11LINCOLNSHIRETODAY103COUNTY MOTORINGpole position, Jack made yet anothertextbook start and controlled the raceright up until the chequered flag.On receiving the trophy, Jack said, “Iwant to say a huge thanks to the Carlinteam for all the hard work they have putin over the year. Most of the work goeson behind the scenes but these guyswork so hard every day of the year togive me a fantastic car to drive. I alsowant to say a massive thanks to Derekand Graham from the Racing StepsFoundation for their support again thisyear, and of course to my family who arethere for me every step of the way.”The Racing Steps Foundation that hassupported Jack is a fund that providesand finances competition and personalperformance development programmesfor young British motorsport talent. It’sobvious that there is a huge financialoutlay for those who want to enter thesport, so the Foundation aims to helpthose who have the talent anddetermination, but don’t have the fundsand mentoring. With John Surtees, oneof the most famous and successfulracing drivers of all time, as anambassador, Jack and the other racers –on both two and four wheels – don’thave to look far for inspiration. After his success in the BritishChampionship, what’s next for Jack? Hisfirst port of call after winning the trophywas Macau where he took part in theprestigious Macau Formula Three GrandPrix. This was the thirtieth running ofthis historic F3 race and is recognisedamong racing drivers as one of the topstreet circuits in the world, with Jack oneof seven drivers competing this weekendfor Carlin Racing. Jack made a decent fistof qualifying and was well placed in therace itself, but sadly a tap by another carcaused his front wing to work loose andeventually forced his retirement.Jack says, “It was been a really greatexperience racing at Macau. Driving onthe track it’s clear to see why it’s one ofthe most iconic racetracks in the world. It’s a challenging circuit but it’s also a lotof fun to drive. I’m pretty happy withhow the qualifying race went and themain race was going quite well too untilI had by front wing tapped and itworked its way loose so I had to come inand pit. It was a real shame to end myrace in the pits but I can still take away alot of positives from my first race atMacau.”As the British F3 Championship hasproduced more than its fair share ofFormula One World Champions, it’s likelywe’ll be seeing a lot more of Jack overthe next few years – and we’ll follow hissuccess every step of the way.“It was been a really great experience racing atMacau. Held at the MemorialHall in the village, it attracts a packedout house every month. We descendedon the venue to see the much-anticipated Chris While and JulieMatthews who have previously won theaward for Best Duo at the Radio 2 FolkAwards. The pair have also beennominated nine times since 2009 forbest live act as well, so expectationswere high. Support in the form of John Blanksproved an excellent opening, with songsthat covered drinking, good companyand even Polish airmen of World War II,his set was a joy to listen to. The songswere delivered in a plain and simpleway, allowing for John’s excellent voiceto fill the space. The audience joining infor the chorus of the beautiful ‘Turn TheBones Around’ was haunting anevocative. John is a regular atGainsborough Folk Club, so look him up.Chris and Julie took to the stage andbegan with a rollicking number andalthough this was a fantastic opener, itdidn’t hint at the sheer variety and scopetheir material takes in. From the seriousand mournful ‘Half A World Away’ andthe harrowing ‘Nie Wieder’ to thecelebratory ‘Shaky Town’ they take theaudience on a journey of emotions fortwo thrilling hour-long sets. The pair areon a tour and proclaim Faldingworth tobe a fantastic place to play. Halfwaythrough, Julie exclaims, “Faldingworth, where have you been all our lives?”.Julie played a request in the form of‘Thorn Upon The Rose’ which she wroteand was recorded by Mary Black, whoreached number one in Ireland with thesong in 1992. This was an ethereal andhalting song which had people singingalong with its tragic subject matter. What was amazing was the amount ofmaterial they were able to ploughthrough in just two hours.
