With some highly-strung scenes and astoryline thick with intrigue and disaster, there weremany plot strands and interrelationships to keep trackof but the cast made it believable. With a plot that hadlove, old resentments rearing their head and a healthydose of humour, it was a mix that worked well. The cast seemed like a mix of enthusiastic beginnersand seasoned veterans, with the father figure played byAlan Watkinson shining as a star, his veering betweendrunken joviality and bitter and angry working classmisery proving a heady concoction. Similarly fantasticwas George Damms as the returning son, Sam. HisAmerican accent never faultered, except when thescript called for it and he made a believable andthought-provoking character. There were some niggles, missed lines and awkwardlighting changes, but we can easily put that down toopening night jitters I’m sure.
