Butdo run it if you need to use the heater ordemister before you move off, so you canstart with a nice clear screen.Clean any snow off the car’s roof andbonnet as well as windows – it seemsobvious when you see it all blow offsomeone else’s roof, but in the earlymorning rush it’s easy to think it won’tmatter, when it does. When you get in the car, make sure allextras - such as lights, heaters and theradio - are turned off before you turn thekey to start the engine. Starting puts aheavy load on the system.Clean your windows inside and out(not just take the ice off) – a dirty screenwill mist up quicker than one that’s clean. Using the aircon helps keep the air inthe car drier, and avoid misting up. Itseems odd putting air conditioning on inthe cold – but it works! Just remember toset the temperature up as well.Think about where you park at night. Some places will be less affected by iceon the windows because of shelter frombuildings, or protection from trees – youmay be able to save yourself some earlymorning problems by where you park atnight. Now is the time to check the battery isin good condition, that your screen washhas a freeze-resistant additive, and do anyother preparation for winter your carneeds. Frosty mornings can be beautifulto look at – but awful to drive in if youand the car aren’t prepared for them. And when it’s icy…Keep to the main roads as they’re morelikely to be salted. Also bear in mind thatafter the frost has gone, ice can remain inareas which are shaded by trees andbuildings – and it forms there first, so becareful in the evening as the temperaturedrops. It may seem obvious, but ensure youhave de-icer and a scraper. And don’t beone of those people, still out there, whoonly scrape a small area and drive lookingthrough a slit – clear the whole screen tobe able to see properly. If the road is slippery when you startoff, do it in second gear, releasing theclutch and accelerating gently, avoidinghigh revs – this will help prevent wheelspin. As you drive, stay in higher gears tohelp avoid wheel spin. In an automaticbe gentle with your feet, and usewhatever gearbox features that the carhandbook says will help in slipperyconditions. It seems obvious, but cars go in ditchesevery winter because drivers haven’ttaken icy roads seriously enough. If it’scold outside treat wet looking patcheswith great care – they could be ice, notwater.Stopping distances are increased by upto ten times in icy conditions, so leaveplenty of distance between your car andthe car in front - plan so that you’re notrelying on your brakes to stop - on icethey may not do that for you. If it is reallyslippery slow down early and use thegears to do it.If your car loses grip and starts to slidesideways, take your foot off theaccelerator, and point the front wheelswhere you want to go. These are just a few pointers to startyou thinking. Being mentally prepared aswell as having the right equipment isvital, so think about any problems youencountered last winter, and what youneed to do to avoid them or overcomethem if they recur this year. Be preparedfor the worst – icy conditions will affectaccelerating, steering and braking.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY93COUNTY MOTORINGTop tips forwinter motoringRoad safety charity the IAM offers motoring tips from Britain’s top advanceddriver, Peter Rodger. Here, he offers Lincolnshire Today readers sometimely tips to drive confidently in icy conditions and stay safe this winterxDrive is the intelligent fourwheel driveBMW’s four wheel drive vehicles feature the xDrive system – which can make a hugedifference to your drive. Test drive the BMW 320d xDrive Sport at Soper of SouthHykeham, Lincoln to experience it in action. The latest version of the BMW xDrive system, which intelligently manages the torquesplit between the front and rear wheels, has been enhanced for efficiency and now weighs 1.4kg less. It takes information about road andwheel speeds, steering angle and accelerator position to interpret the driver’s intentions and what the car is doing to calculate how toapportion engine torque. As a result, it eliminates both understeer and oversteer to deliver improved cornering abilities. In combination with Dynamic Performance Control integrated into the rear differential, it can be even more finely controlled. It varies thedrive split between the rear wheels – torque vectoring – for even further enhanced cornering capabilities and feedback.090-093:Layout 1 6/12/13 13:00 Page 494 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYEQUINEAs equine specialist Brenda Gilligan, SeniorSolicitor at Wilkin Chapman, points out, “Whenyou’ve chosen your stallion, check whether he is ‘nofoal, free return’ or ‘no foal, no fee’. The latterusually means that if your mare is not scanned infoal by October 1st, your fee will be returned.“There are no guarantees that a mare will ‘take’ in foal. If it is‘free return’, check how many times you can do this andwhether you can use a different mare for the return. Somemares and stallions just aren’t compatible, or the original maremay be injured. You need to see the full terms and conditionsfor using that stallion and not just the attractive stud card.“If you’re sending the mare away to be covered, whatfacilities are there and how will she be looked after? Will theykeep her and continue to cover her until scanned in foal, or isthere a time limit ora limited number ofcovering attempts?”Rather than gettingthe stallion to covernaturally, artificialinsemination is becomingincreasingly popular. As Brenda says, “AI ismore convenient and avoids the risk of injury with a naturalcovering, though can be more expensive. Find out who would beresponsible for injuries if one did occur during the coveringprocess.“Taking a mare on loan for breeding purposes is quite commonas not everyone wants to keep the mare after the foal is weaned.Make sure you have a detailed loan contract drawn up clearlysetting out who is responsible for what and particularly theduration of the loan. There can be no guarantee of a pregnancyor a live foal, but what do you want to do if that happens? Makesure that the contract is clear that the foal will belong not to theowner of the mare, but the person loaning her - for better orworse!”Hopefully if the process is a success, your next job will be to findthe Burghley entry forms!BreedingobviousIt’s time to exchange Christmas cardsfor stud cards - but there are somelegal pitfalls before your ownBurghley winner is taking those firstfew wobbly stepsMake sure that the contract isclear that the foal willbelong not to the ownerof the mare, but theperson loaning her - forbetter or worse!094:Layout 1 6/12/13 12:02 Page 1Lincoln City legend Steve Thompson wasthe guest of honour at the recent dinnerheld by the Lincoln Sportsmans Club, heldas usual at the Bentley Hotel.
