The whole twelvemonths are ahead of us, ready to be attacked.OK, so maybe this is the kind of thing we do every Januaryand end up twelve months later in the same place doing thesame thing. But if you want to make a fresh start in 2014, whynot start the year with a new look? A new hairdo or a change toyour regular make-up routine can have a transformational effectA fresh start to2014The new year is upon us and for many people that meansresolutions and a chance to start afresh– it can ensure your friends look at you in a whole new light, and perhaps give you the confidence to make those bigdecisions.Certainly the major hair trend this winter emphasises thisconfident approach. Cristiano Basciu, Artistic Director of RichardWard Hair & Metrospa says, “The theme of a free-spiritedwoman stems from a new generation of modern fashionista –one who has a carefree, non-conformist attitude and likes to dothings her way. This idea of a new breed of woman who has nosolid roots is reflected in her hair – long, healthy, feminine andeffortless. The new buzz words to follow are loose, relaxed, careless and feminine.”2014 is therefore the year where you can let loose... but formany, any idea of this trend being effortless and carefreecouldn’t be further from the truth as you have to endure severalmonths of that hideous growing-out phase before your hairreaches the right length for you to do anything new with it. Butit doesn’t have to be like this! Hair extensions are now so flexibleand of such a high quality that virtually nobody will be able tospot where your real hair ends. You may have shied away from extensions in the past thanksto scare stories about extensive use causing long-term damageto your hair, but the new breed don’t have that problem. Forexample, some now come on a fine wire that you just slip on toyour head and, using a comb, you pull some of your own hairover the top to hide the wire. There’s no glue or clips, so there’sno chance of damaging your own hair – as well as making iteasier to make use of them just for one special night, orabandon them immediately if you don’t think it suits you.Another way of getting a new look for a new year can comefrom permanent make-up. The word “permanent” may send ashiver down your spine, but in this case it only lasts abouttwelve to eighteen months and the whole point is to add subtledefinition, not leave you with an irremovable mask. The most familiar aspects of permanent make-up are probablythe eyebrow treatments, which are great for people with patchyor non-existent eyebrows. A new teeth whitening servicein Newark aims to dispel thosefears, and give people the whitersmile they have always wanted —safely, effectively and affordably.Alpha Teeth Whitening,Farndon Road, is run byCatherine Rhuon and GenineGeorge, who are trained todental technician standard andhave more than 50 years’experience in the dental industry. The pair are fully-trained andinsured to use the latest teethwhitening equipment, in which alaser-activated peroxide-free gelachieves noticeable results inabout an hour. The LumidentUltra Accelerated Whitening System they use was voted the topwhitening system in 2011.Because the method is simply a non-invasive deep-clean, it willnot damage or change the structure of the teeth in any way. It isquick, painless, and particularly suitable for sensitive teeth.Catherine and Genine have had their own teeth whitened usingthe new method, and are delighted with the results.Treatment and results will vary from person to person, so everyclient has an initial consultation to establish what they would like toachieve from treatment, and what can reasonably be expected.“We do not want people to be disappointed, so we are alwaysrealistic about what we can do,” Catherine said.During the treatment, clients’ teeth are coated with thewhitening gel, which is then exposed to laser-activated UV light, while the mouth is held gently open with a retractor.Clients relax on a couch throughout. The results are checked every15 minutes, so clients can decide on the level of whiteness they want.A treatment costs £99 and the results last four to six months, depending on a clients’ diet. The Alpha Teeth Whitening treatment room is relaxing andhomely, but the equipment is fully mobile, so clients could have theprocess carried out in their homes.Catherine and Genine also work flexible hours, six days a week.Tel: 01636 650320 Email: alphatec1@gmail.comwww.alphateethwhitening.co.ukmore definition, and are very popular with people who aren’tvery good at applying makeup. Youmay be able to talk yourself out ofexhaustion, and as such feelings ofdispleasure, leading to a greater amountof training to be done. The generalreaction to the suggestion of imageryand self-talk techniques in the gym hasbeen usually “what a load of fluff”. Yetscientific research is showing there maybe something to it. A recent study published in the Journalof Sport & Exercise Psychology highlightsthe use of imagery techniques inimproving your feelings of pleasureduring a workout. The imagery techniquerequired the participants to recall aprevious bout of exercise when they hadfound exercise enjoyable and when theyhad felt energised. They were asked to re-create the feelings and to imagine theirprevious experience as vividly as possible. Subsequently feelings of pleasurewhere experience more so than whenimagery techniques were not used. Results also indicated that imageryinfluenced the frontal cortex of the brainand led to an increased exercise capacityon a cycling to exhaustion task.Specifically, the frontal cortex consumedmore oxygen when imagining previouslypleasurable experiences. In addition to using imagery techniques, positive self-talk can have a significanteffect upon your endurance levels. To beeffective, the self-talk should be “consistentand systematic”. Phrases as simple as “Youare doing well” or “I’m feeling good” ifrepeated steadily and persistently, havebeen shown in another recent study toagain prolong endurance on a high-intensity cycling test to exhaustion. Exercise scientists thought for a longtime that muscles limited performance. The logic was that muscles stoppedworking because they could not produceany more force due to things like lacticacid, or the heart could not get enoughblood (and thus oxygen) to them. Theidea the brain is in control and ultimatelylimits exercise performance is relativelynew but so blindingly obvious. This latest research showing imageryand self-talk improve exercise capacitycan be added to the interventions suchas the effects of music, caffeine, placebo-effect, time deception and allowing forknowledge of endpoint. All of theseinventions have shown improvedperformance due to the effects on thebrain! Further, I have shown in a study Irecently published in the British Journal ofSports Medicine the impact of cognitiveload, or over-using the decision-makingparts of your brain, negatively impactsexercise performance regardless of thestate of the muscles, heart or lungs. All of this considered it is the brain thatlimits your exercise capacity andperformance. Therefore, the take homemessage here is that is a certain elementof “mind-over-matter” in which you canmanipulate how you feel during exercisebased on imagery and self-talk techniques.Ultimately this can lead to an improvedcapacity for training and greateradherence to an exercise program. We have a considered, slow andcareful approach to food in Lincolnshire and this meanswhen you see the county name on something, it usuallymeans quality. We’ve lost count of the amount of festivals we’ve beento elsewhere in the UK, only to find Lincolnshire producebeing lapped up. A recent anecdote from a holidayingfriend at a sausage festival in Germany revealed theLincolnshire sausage had been a star of the show, evenlined up alongside various wursts and frankfurters! Beer and even cider is a huge market and you’d betterbelieve Lincolnshire has its hand in this industry too.Places we eat while on our travels seem to be rampingup their offerings of local ales and ciders and oneparticular place we have eaten on several occasions hasstarted to rotate its real ale every month and has neverrepeated an ale in over a year!Whether it’s in your favourite restaurant, out and aboutat the Lincolnshire Show or cooking for yourself at home,it’s worth exploring the county to find the best of thebest food we can offer. Here’s to another year of fillingour faces!Foodie heavenLincolnshire is becoming even more well-known for artisan food and this year will no doubt seefoodies watering at the mouth with all the events coming up!049:Layout 1 6/12/13 12:06 Page 1Next >
