The answermay surprise, as LincolnshireToday’s Angie Cooper wasrecently invited by theLincolnshire Road SafetyPartnership to take part in aspecial exercise thatillustrates how to recognise, recover from and moreimportantly prevent accidentson our county’s roads. As we travel across the county weoften see drivers taking silly risks – goingtoo fast, using their phone or generallyjust not paying due care. While I was onthe way to RAF Scampton in awfulweather condition I’d already seen twotraffic accidents, which made me evenmore apprehensive. After a brief introduction, we hoppedinto the car. Suddenly we span this wayand that, and after we stopped the carthe instructor explained what kind of skidwe’d just experienced and how to rectifyit safely. The instructor emphasised thedifference between an oversteer and anundersteer and the strategies needed toovercome both of these. I must admit toscreaming slightly, but I also feel I couldcope if either were to occur. The one thing I found bewildering wasthe ABS brake skid. Knowing how thistool is supposed to help, and that I canand should be able to safely steer awayfrom any problems is one thing, butputting it into practice is another.Unfortunately on my first attempt, Ifollowed the rule, screamed, slammedmy brakes on and ran the imaginarychild over. Second time around, Iallowed my brain to kick in and avoidedthe obstacle.I certainly felt much more confidenthaving completed the course, and if wehave a bad winter, I think I’d be able tohandle almost anything the roads deliver. The skid course lasts three hours and isavailable to all drivers aged overseventeen. The fee is £49, though thereare discounts available for seventeen tonineteen year olds. As well as beingvaluable, it’s a great team buildingexercise, and I know all of us atLincolnshire Today are signed up to takepart in the new year. For more information, contact thePartnership via www.roadlincs.com.Keep calm anddrive safely81_Layout 1 11/12/2014 13:49 Page 182 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYEQUINEAs equine specialist Brenda Gilligan,Senior Solicitor at Wilkin Chapman, points out, “Obesity in horses has beenan issue for some time, particularlyamong show horses. There is aperception that leaner and thereforeallegedly fitter horses do not win prizes.“It’s not only horses, however. Ridingschool owners have long noticed clients, often beginners wishing to start riding, are getting bigger and their concern hasbeen not to discriminate against largerriders – but if you don’t have weightcarrying horses, what can you do? Doyou have to spend £5000 or more on aShire so that one person can ride? Whatabout overweight workers who can nolonger ride smaller ponies, or muck outwithout becoming breathless andfatigued? “Weight alone has not been a groundfor discrimination as a disability is, butthis may change due to a recentpreliminary ruling in a Danish case. MrKarsten Kaltoft was a childminder whohad never weighed under 25 stones. Hisweight prevented him from undertakingall aspects of his job – he couldn’t benddown to tie up children’s shoelaces, forinstance. He lost his job and argued thatPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/ALEKSANDR HUNTAWeighingit upNew Year is traditionally a time for resolutions and a perennialfavourite is a resolve to lose weight – which can often be an issue inthe equine worldPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/OLGARU7982-83_Layout 1 11/12/2014 14:25 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY83EQUINEit was because of his weight and that amounted to discrimination.“The advocate concluded that very severe obesity could beconsidered a disability and therefore discrimination was possible. Moreover, it even concluded that self-inflicted weight gain wasirrelevant – it mattered not how the weight was gained. Thedecision is not yet binding and has to go before the EuropeanCourt of Justice, which largely follows such preliminary rulings, ifit is to become so.”If it does, this could have an impact on our region’s ridingschools. Brenda says, “Basically, riding schools would have tomake sure that bigger workers and riders are not at adisadvantage compared to slimmer ones. Many schools haveweight limits as a welfare issue for the horses – but there are tallpeople who are over the limit, but not overweight in themselves. Some larger riders will also be experienced and will ride more‘lightly’ than a beginner within the limit.“Possibly it is more a question of discretion and matching theright horse to the right rider. Certainly there may be businessadvantages in catering for larger riders by having appropriatehorses. The hunting field is not completely populated by size zeroriders and they seem to have managed! I don’t believe thathaving bigger horses is yet compulsory.“Research suggests employers in all fields have not welcomedthe ruling. They feel it may encourage people to abdicateresponsibility for their own health and the way it affects theirability in the workplace and elsewhere. The opposite view is thatlarger workers or riders shouldn’t be subject to humiliationbecause of their size. The question has been raised as to whetherit would be legal to include mandatory fitness checks in anemployment contract.“It’s certainly a sensitive issue that needs careful handling. If indoubt, you are well advised to take independent legal advice froma specialist employment lawyer.”82-83_Layout 1 11/12/2014 14:25 Page 2the artwork, including brush strokes and surfaces.
