Hitting the market for the first time in over 60 years, this month’s featured property has been enjoyed by the same family since 1958. Boasting stunning panoramic views of the Lincolnshire Wolds, the vendor notes that the property’s vista could easily win a competition for the county’s best views of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. “I’ve not seen anything like it anywhere else,” he said. “With this property you are looking up at the Wolds on two sides and down on the plains on the third side which is rare.” Set on Rasen Road, in Tealby, the pretty village is what has driven the owners to keep the home for so long. The vendor said: “It is a lovely property in what is said to be one of the best villages in the county. There is a lot going on in Tealby!” The village benefits from a primary school, tea room, a thatched public house, church, and village shop, and is well located between Lincoln, Grimsby, and Market Rasen. It also has a wide variety of circular walks, perfect for those with dogs and those who simply need to get out into nature for a breath of fresh air (which has become increasingly important in the current pandemic), with the most well- known walk being The Viking Way, for which the starting point is just 150 yards from the property. If taking a tour of the property, which was extended in the 1980s, one will begin by stepping into the entrance porch, before moving into the entrance hall with its parquet floor. The dining room can be found to the right, as well as the breakfast kitchen, featuring a gas 12 Á 10-13.qxp_Layout 1 17/12/2020 15:22 Page 212 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES fired Aga and a walk in pantry. To the left of the hall meanwhile is the sitting room/lounge which leads to the garden room through wooden glazed bi-doors. The lounge is the vendor’s favourite room in the house: “It really stands out as it was designed to be extended, to be fully open. With the glass doors open, you can create a very large entertaining space, up to 140ft. That has been particularly useful for parties, which we would have here every year. I think it was partly designed with that in mind.” He added: “The garden room at the back of the property is the one we spend most time in. Quite often you look out and see dog walkers and hikers on The Viking Way.” The ground floor also holds a utility room, WC, and storage room. Travelling upstairs, four bedrooms can be found with built in wardrobes. One of the bedrooms currently hosts a retractable partition, to create two separate rooms, and the back bedrooms present a fantastic view of the Lincolnshire Wolds. A WC and bathroom also sit on the first floor. Venturing outside, the property is approached via a large driveway, which leads to the detached double garage and sits next to the front lawn. Hedgerow borders and planted flower beds can also be found here. The rear of the property is where the garden space offered at the home really comes to life. One will discover an outbuilding, double greenhouse, vegetable plot, shed, 10-13.qxp_Layout 1 17/12/2020 15:22 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 13 HOMES compost heap, patio, pond, and a mixture of shrubs and trees. In 2020 the vendor’s favourite aspect of the garden has been the vegetable garden and greenhouse. He added: “During COVID, I took the decision to grow lots of things, to go down the self- sufficient route many others did. I spent many hours out in the garden during the summer.” While the vendor has always had tomatoes in the greenhouse, a variety of produce was grown for the first time in 2020, including peppers and aubergines, while the beetroot is highlighted as the year’s stand out vegetable. The property also has six apple trees, which offer a combination of eating and cooking apples. The vendor said: “It was a very good year for apples, the garage is full of trays!” A well-loved property perched on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, the home is now on the market with Mount and Minster for £495,000. Go through your home room by room with the aim of cutting down the clutter and keeping only what you love. Think of it like a job interview and each object and item is hoping for space – if they don’t make the cut, then get rid of it. Simple. Anything in good condition can be donated, while everything else can be recycled or disposed of responsibly. Of course, you might want to replace some of those things you chuck out – whether that’s because the room just doesn’t work without it, such as a desk or bookcase, or because you taste and style have changed. Either way, we’re emphasising sleek, modern elegant design in this month’s home trends – because no interior choices reflect the new year feeling quite like modern design with its sleek, clean lines. It was a crucial moment in his early career, helping to finance his way forward and turn those artistic aspirations into a reality. When he left the studio two years later, Andrew spent many years as a freelance artist taking on private commissions. This period truly demonstrates his versality as an artist, taking on everything from pencil portraits to landscapes in oil. Given his deep wellspring of ability, it serves to follow that Andrew would be 16 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRE Born in 1967, Andrew Craig was raised in Glasgow and now resides in charming Market Rasen. His career as an artist spans more than thirty-two years and, in that time, he has turned his hand to many different artistic fields. His journey as a professional began when he was twenty- one after securing a job at Games Workshop – the design studio behind the massively popular Warhammer miniature wargames – as a figure painter for its landscapes fascinated by all things in the arts. Indeed, he has a lifelong passion for the performing arts and theatre, in particular, with his favourite show being cirque du soleil. Not only is he a theatre appreciator, but was given the opportunity to work in the industry itself for the Theatre Royal in Lincoln as part of their set design team. Here his job varied from painting the massive backing cloths to painting props. His inspiration for entering the fine art We explore the life and works of Andrew Craig, an artist who has worked on everything from painting popular wargame miniatures, to stunning oil landscapes. The lull of Andrew’s aim to create harmony in his audience is exemplified in his palette of purples, magically translated into a haze of restful and calm shades. His use of light against dark (chiaroscuro) focusses the mind and encourages the viewer to relax and observe the beauty of his art. 16-17.qxp_Layout 1 17/12/2020 08:08 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 17 ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRE arena was for the work of fellow artist and friend, Jonathan Shaw. Andrew recalls the first-time seeing Jonathan’s work, particularly how “pioneering in its style” it was. He “wanted to produce work that would inspire the hearts and minds of people in the same ways that Jonathan’s work inspired’ him”. He has been of great support to Andrew in his own artwork in recent years. Andrew signed to Washington Green fine art in around 2006, after parting ways with them a year later he entered a licensing deal Washington Green and Saffron Editions which had worldwide success. From 2014 to the present day, Andrew has been successfully tutoring art classes teaching oils, drawing, water colour and acrylics, as another way to finance being an artist. “When I teach art, my aim is to set each individual free on their artistic journeys,” he said. I’ve pretty much closed all my social media down to have 100% focus. The work I’m painting at the moment has been liberating. This [the mountains] is what I love to paint! I’m trying to capture, for the viewer, a state of solitude, calmness and harmony.” Translated from Romani, Varekai is the English word for “Wherever” and this amazing piece has the power to transport you wherever you want to go. You could be high up in the mountains where the summit is still ahead of you, to a cliff top where the spray breaks against the moonlight or even into a waking dream where the superb colours woo you into a calm contemplation of Varekai wherever that might be for you. Happy New Year! I hope that you managed to spend some time with your family and friends over the festive period in your Christmas bubbles. While last year was certainly different, we are hoping that this year we will be able to return to something more normal, especially as we are celebrating 20 years in business. One thing we have always been able to do is look after our gardens, and our outdoor spaces have played an important part in our lives in the last year. With a new year you may want to create a new garden. If you are looking for inspiration, then looking at the predicted trends for this year could be a good place to start. The on-trend colour for gardens this year are white and grey. Grey has been one of the most popular paint colours for our homes, and 2021 will see this colour making its way into our gardens. You could paint your fence dark grey and then complement it with bright coloured plants. Purples and pinks go well with grey so lavender or anemone-hupenhensis “splendens” would work well. And if these are in white planters your garden will be on trend. Bring the inside to the outside has been popular for several years, however 2021 sees the introduction of garden rugs and cushions. These are manufactured from weatherproof materials and so they are durable and easy to clean. You can also buy ones made from recyclable materials. I would advise that they are stored inside, or in a shed, during the winter months. Another trend for this year is Permaculture Gardening. This is a holistic approach to gardening that stems from ‘permanent agriculture’ principals. It is a way to grow your own food and use what nature gives you to make it happen. You work with the natural forces - wind, sun and water - to provide food, shelter, water and everything else your garden needs. The key principle behind a permaculture garden is that you are replicated patterns of growth and harvest that occur naturally. And finally, cottage gardens are making a comeback. Wild garden plants are popular, and these can be interspersed among more structural plants to create a cottage garden new garden New year New year GARDEN ADVICE 18-19.qxp_Layout 1 17/12/2020 07:37 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 19 Specialised Services in Garden Design Landscaping and Tree Maintenance Backed by a highly-skilled and experienced team, we’ve built our reputation on an ability to provide our clients with professional, tailored gardening and forestry solutions FREE NO OBLIGATION QUOTATIONS FULLERS Landscaping Call 01522 868717 or 07867 510544 landscapinglincolnshire@gmail.com www.landscapinglincolnshire.com Around the garden • Move patio pots to sheltered sites during cold periods • Improve the soil by spreading and forking in compost or manure over beds and around trees shrubs and roses • Move plants growing in the wrong place • If snow falls, knock it off the branches of evergreen shrubs and conifers to prevent branches breaking • Dig deeply in areas where you’ll be planting new roses, shrubs or perennials • Clean algae and moss from paths and steps • Plant new fruit bushes and trees • Sprinkle a top dressing of gritty compost over lawns • Dig over veg plots, mixing compost into the soil as you go • Cover rhubarb with forcing jars for an early harvest • Use cloches to warm the soil for early sowings • Dig up congested clumps of winter aconites and transplant to new sites • Buy shallots, onion sets and seed potatoes • Order bulbs, corms and tubers for summer flowers feel.
