While somemedical professionals have a strong awareness of dementia, othershave not been given the specialist training that is badly needed. InLincolnshire alone there are 10,000 people living with dementia andthat number is likely to raise to 15,000 in ten years’ time so its vitalthat the right support is in place.Alzheimer's Society has campaigned since 2005 to make drugs suchas Aricept more freely available and in March last year NICE finallyagreed to alter the guidelines, offering hope to thousands more people- though clearly many are still missing out. While drug treatmentsoffer a higher quality of life for many, getting a diagnosis is vital for allas it allows you to access benefits and support, as well as enabling youto prepare for the future.Across the country, we are continuing our efforts to work moreclosely with medical professionals - both in GP surgeries and inhospitals to raise awareness and increase diagnosis rates. We arecurrently looking to recruit a volunteer who could help lead this workin Lincolnshire and would encourage anyone who is interested in therole to call 01636 642892.Dementia is a progressive and eventually terminal condition whichis affecting an increasing number of people. However, I believe thatwith the right support people can live well throughout the condition.Ian Howarth,Alzheimer's Society East Midlands area managerIf you have something to say that you wish to share with the rest of Lincolnshire Today readers please dropus a line to the usual address. The best of the mailbag will win a case of wine.Lincolnshire Today Magazine, Armstrong House, Armstrong Street, Grimsby, N E Lincs DN31 2QE Email: lincs-today@blmgroup.co.uk HAVE YOUR SAYShow timeDear Lincolnshire Today,I’d like to add my congratulations to Jayne Southall, who has been named the newdirector in charge of Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, home of the annual County Show.Jayne has been a huge part of the team that has overseen the shift of the annualCounty Show into a substantial profit centre, announcing that the 2011 Show made abig shift into the black, thanks to a £200,000 increase in income over the previous year. The Lincolnshire Show is still county’s best kept secret. There were more than 60,000visitors last year but there is still huge potential and I’m sure Jayne is set on increasingnumbers of both visitors and exhibitors in 2012. Good luck to her!P BeelbyLincolnReaders’LETTERSPickof theMonth12 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYScrap thecashDear Lincolnshire Today,I, for one, welcome Lord Henley’ssupport surrounding the cash sale ofscrap to merchants. Banning cash saleswould crack down on anonymous sellersbecause the metal could always be tracedback to the person who sold it to thedealer. There have been hundreds ofincidences of metal thefts from propertiesand not enough is being done to stopgangs stealing to order because the policeare not given enough power to curb theproblem.Hopefully this move will cut down ona very serious rural crime.J HollingsworthSpilsbySpeedfreakDear Lincolnshire Today,Thanks for your onlinecoverage of Jack Harvey, theLincolnshire-based British F3racing driver.
