But for all that, there’s still something to be said for getting dressed up and showering your partner with love and attention. Some might say that this shouldn’t be relegated to one day of the calendar, but rather the default state all year round. However, experts agree that making love work in long-term relationships requires compromises and working romantic gestures and intimacy around other commitments – be that work, children or something else entirely. The smartest relationship experts say booking date nights in the calendar can be positive in a relationship, reinforcing commitment and maintaining that spark of love. As well as giving both parties something to look forward to, it also allows the relationship to exist outside of other commitments and flourish on its own strength. This all brings us back to Valentine’s Day. There’s no better excuse to book a romantic meal, enjoy an evening out, or drop the kids off at their grans to enjoy the intimacy of an empty house. It should come as no surprise that restaurants and venues book up fast in the lead up to Valentine’s Day, so we won’t waste any time on that topic. Suffice it to say that preparation is key, not just with booking but with beautifying yourself ready for the occasion. It can seem overwhelming, though, trying to get your hair just so, get your nails done, fix your face, pick the right outfit out with the shoes to match. Stop. Take a deep breath. Calm down and let us be your guide. First thing’s first: skin care. Although a good skin care routine should already be a core part of your beauty regime, it’s worth putting in some extra effort in the weeks and days leading up to Valentine’s Day. If you’re planning on getting your legs, underarms or bikini zone waxed, it’s definitely worth focusing on these areas when it comes to moisturising. Your skin will thank you for it afterwards. Speaking of which, waxing can leave skin looking red and bumpy, so it’s probably best to avoid getting it done the day before your romantic evening out. But it’s far from the only hair removal therapy at your disposal, with creams, epilators and razors available. Don’t feel that plucking and shaving is a requirement, though. Beauty comes in so many different forms. The important thing is that you feel comfortable with your partner and in your own skin. Call us presumptuous, but there’s a good chance you’ll be using your lips this Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, this time of year chapped lips are almost inevitable Stress free beauty guaranteed If there’s one time of year where getting dressed up to the nines is not only encouraged but expected, it’s Valentine’s Day. Yet stress threatens to smother what should otherwise be a romantic occasion, but with this helpful beauty and style advice, you’ll look and feel amazing. 46-47.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 09:53 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 47HAIR & BEAUTYand who wants to be kissed by rough cracked lips? Arm yourself with a quality nourishing lip balm, something with coconut or aloe vera, and don’t forget to use it at night and throughout the day. It doesn’t take long for lips to repair, but a lapse in your routine can quickly see them return to their former chapped state. A helpful tip to remember is to buff your lips with your toothbrush. This helps exfoliate lips and get rid of dead skin and all those little rough bits. Hair might just be the biggest stress as far as preparation is concerned. Although there’s nothing wrong with doing your hair at home, it’s probably worth splashing out and getting it professionally styled at a salon. Again, it’s worth booking well in advance to ensure you get the desired appointment. Then it’s just a case of going with the flow, catching up with your hairdresser and enjoying the results. Stuck for what to go for? Don’t go chasing the latest extravagant styles clogging up your Instagram feed just because. Go for something timeless, like an updo or bob. There’s a reason why they’re seen on the catwalk almost every season. Most salons worth their salt will offer more than just hair services with some of the best providing waxing, nails and even tanning. This way you can get most of your Valentine’s Day prep done under one roof meaning the only thing you’re left to worry about is what to wear. But remember, just because they’re all in one building doesn’t mean you won’t need separate bookings. Whether you’re buying in a new outfit or wearing an old favourite, preparation is key. Of course there’s ironing or dry cleaning to consider, but we’re talking about the whole outfit not just the trousers, dress or skirt. That means shoes and accessories. These can make or break an outfit, so it’s worth setting an evening aside to try on some different combinations to make sure you’re happy and comfortable with what you decide on and that there’s no nasty surprises waiting for you on the big day. We’ve all got a friend who’s gone out in a stunning dress only to discover it a lot more sheer than they were expecting. Finally, there’s make-up. Whether you’re getting this applied professionally or doing it yourself, the thing to bear in mind is what you’re going for. You don’t want to go for warm passionate shades only to then put on an outfit that’s all blue and grey. Classic styles such as smoky eyes are always a great fall back but current trends favouring the natural nude look would pair well with almost any outfit. Valentine’s Day is a time to remember why you fell in love with your partner, feel that same quickening of the heart, the flutter in the stomach and that near insatiable pull. That’s pretty hard to feel if you’ve spent the whole day stressing about what you’re going to wear and if you’ll get out of the salon on time. Make sure your schedule’s clear, get the kids a babysitter, book restaurant and salon appointments well in advance and get some prep work in. That should pave the way for a beautiful romantic evening. © Shutterstock / Mike Laptev© Shutterstock / aimy27feb46-47.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 09:53 Page 2walks48 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAYLincolnshireDescribed as the Wold’s finest walking centres, and for good reason, as it has routes radiating in all directions. For this month’s walk, we head East, from Tetford to South Ormsby. Archaeological finds reveal the Tetford area was inhabited as far back as 6,000BC – during what is known as the Mesolithic period. The Romans were known to have visited here too, of course, as it lies between Lincoln and Wainfleet, and would have, then given them access by ferry to Norfolk. Amazing what can be discovered on these walks and the things we might miss if driving by in our cars without stopping to explore. St Mary’s church is our starting point in Tetford, which interestingly stands almost Tetford and South Ormsby is another of our all time favourite walks – it’s one that was introduced to us some time ago by our friend Hugh Marrows, a keen walker and author of many books on the subject. 48-50.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 09:59 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 49LINCOLNSHIRE WALKSimmediately on the Greenwich meridian. As such, our walk takes us from the western hemisphere to the east – and back again on our return. The church is built of local greenstone and dates back to the 14th century. Unusually, the graves of two gypsies, are marked in the grounds: Tyro Boswell and Edward Hearing and we learn that they were buried after being killed by lightening here in 1830. The church is well worth a visit as there are also displays of 17th century armour, found in the area – thought to be the remains of armour following the Battle of Winceby in 1643. History abounds in Tetford as can be PHOTOS COURTESY OR RICHARD PICKSLEY50 Áseen from the public house across the road which is said to have been frequented by young Alfred Tennyson from nearby Somersby. In South Ormsby, the old school (1858), the inn and the cottages with their matching architectural style, are all painted black and white, which suggests it was an estate village. The hall, which can be seen from the road beyond its lake, has been the Massingberd family seat since 1638. The present building, of 1752, was designed by James Paine and had an upper storey removed in the 1920’s. South Ormsby Park is well wooded thanks to Adrian Massingberd who planted a new wood every year starting in 1949 and continuing every year without fail until 1999. THE ROUTE Starting by the churchyard, we walk through to a kissing gate and into a meadow, where we veer half left before going through one of the many gaps in the old tree line to our right. Next, we head towards a stile and footbridge and from there aim towards another kissing gate, in line with the end of a brick wall, then walk on to a stile actually against the wall end. 48-50.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 09:59 Page 2Next >
