Keep a healthy weight A person who is overweight has an increased chance of developing coronary heart disease (CHD), so it’s important to stick to a healthy and balanced diet. What constitutes a healthy weight is different from person to person, dependent upon height, age and gender. If in doubt a BMI calculator can give you a rough idea, but don’t focus too much on such stats. Cut down on saturated fat and salt Cholesterol is a major cause of CHD and should be lowered wherever possible. Eating food that is high in saturated fat can raise the level of cholesterol in the bloodstream. Focus on lean cuts of meat, and lower-fat dairy products. Fish is also a fantastic option due to the vitamins it contains, and the lack of saturated fat. When it comes to seasonings, try to stay 60 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HEALTH & FITNESS As you will have read on the previous pages, heart health is important for everyone – and while it’s good to raise money for charities like the British Heart Foundation, it’s important to also look after your own. Health and fitness is naturally at the heart of this, and here we’ll take a look at how you can keep yours ticking well into your older years. Whatever your age, and whatever your walk of life, the below examples are what we can do to improve the health of our heart. Be Active Regular exercise is not just good for protecting the heart, it also helps to boost the mood and reduce stress, which are other factors that can lead to reduced health. The average person should aim for a little over two hours a week, or thirty minutes a day – but this should always be adapted for what kind of lifestyle you live. Someone who works in a sedentary job could certainly benefit from a little extra exercise, so consider walking or biking to work if possible. As we grow older, our ability to meet these targets may dwindle, but there are still plenty of activities one can do in order to burn calories. Low-movement sports like golf or bowls can help keep a person healthy, and walking is a surprisingly good way to exercise. The fresh air will help as well, and the benefits of social interaction and enjoyment cannot be understated. There are plenty of other clubs and hobbies one can take as well, and if they involve getting out and walking around, then they are sure to help. This is also why it’s not uncommon to see elderly people with dogs as pets, because the act of walking a dog can help keep a person active, At the heart of the matter Help yourself and your heart to become fitter this year. © Shutterstock /wavebreakmedia 60-61.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2020 13:22 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 61 © Shutterstock /DenisProduction.com Meridian Leisure Centre Wood Lane, Louth, LN11 8SA 01507 607650 "|-ঞom"rou|v Centre High Street, Mablethorpe, LN12 1HA 01507 472129 oum1-v|Ѵ;ooѴ & Fitness Suite ouom-ঞom)-Ѵhķ Horncastle, LN9 6HP 01507 522489 "h;]m;vvooѴ & Fitness Suite Grand Parade, "h;]m;vvķ PE25 2UG 01754 610675 Magna Vitae is a Registered Charity. Eat plenty of fruit and veg You should be looking to get your five a day for a variety of reasons, from skin to eyes – and for every other part of the body, but it also works to reduce the risk of heart disease. These don’t have to be eaten on their own if that’s not an attractive option. Try mixing fruit and veg into curries, smoothies or even pasta sauces. Try to cut down on alcohol and quit smoking Alcohol is packed with calories, so this is more of a “maintain your weight” piece of advice than anything else. There’s nothing wrong with having some fun every now and then, but just keep in mind that it will add on to however much you’ve eaten – so work it off at the gym afterwards. When it comes to smoking however, there is no such way to work back the damage. Smoking is one of the main causes of CHD, and studies show that someone who has quit for even just a year – has half the risk of developing CHD as a regular smoker. Add onto that the improved health from avoiding lung disease and a host of other problems, and quitting smoking should be at the top of every person’s list. The jury is still officially out on whether vapes and e-cigs are free from the risks, but early studies suggest that even if they are bad, they likely can’t be worse than cigarettes. 60-61.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2020 13:22 Page 262 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COUNTY MOTORING Must Have Motors… If you need a new car, or you just like motors, read on to see what we’ve been driving since our last issue. Must Have Motors… 62-65.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2020 11:45 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 63 COUNTY MOTORING It is a Japanese car scene legend. Yes, the name ‘Supra’ brings joy to automotive aficionados everywhere. And guess what? It’s back. Toyota has been teasing us with the model’s return for what seems like forever. And it’s the beast we’ve been hoping for. Looks-wise, the car is bold and brawny – and this mirrors what’s under the metal, too. Beneath the lengthy bonnet, there’s a bulging six-cylinder powerplant, just bursting at the seams with clout. Then there’s the cosy, well-equipped cabin for two under the Toyota’s roof – and the obligatory rear spoiler. So, if you’re a parent, this isn’t going to be your main family transport - it’s a toy - and a £54,000 one at that. You will get your child in the only seat beside you. And, yes, there’ll be squabbles if you have more than one offspring. If you’re buying this for play purposes – and you will be - the 3.0-litre lump will please you. It is silky-smooth, pushing out 340ps, propelling the Toyota to 62mph in 4.3 seconds via an eight- speed auto box. Oh, and the top speed is 155mph. That is licence-losing territory right there. 2020’s rear-wheel-drive Supra is a clear triumph when it comes to entertainment. But it’s a lot of dosh for a non-premium marque. Happily, though, the car’s cabin is generously trimmed and is a more pleasant place to sit than, say, a similarly priced Porsche. Admirers of fast cars from the Far East will be delighted to learn, then, that the Supra’s return to these shores is a victory. It is a talented sports car with hot looks and a responsive rear end. We just wish we had a spare £54,000, because it was hard to give this motor back after a week behind its wheel. The steering is pin-sharp, making the car easy to manoeuvre at all speeds, but particularly so in town. Performance is surprisingly quick in the Scala, with the 1.0 TSI 115ps engine automatic on test here, capable of 0-62mph in 9.9 seconds. The fuel economy is equally impressive, with the model averaging out a frugal 40+mpg. CO2 emissions are low as well at 116g/km, meaning road tax will only set you back £145 after the car’s first birthday. The seven-speed automatic transmission moves fluidly through the gears, making the DSG version of the Scala an effortless drive, especially if you regularly need to drive in stop-start traffic. In SE L trim, the Scala gets a bunch of features that sound as if they belong to a “prestige” badged car. Linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission, the Kia will do 0- 62mph in 9.8 seconds. Its maximum speed is 124mph. But perhaps more important is the ProCeed’s excellent fuel efficiency. You can get over 50mpg in this model on an average run; it feels like the car has a tank that keeps on giving. Co2 emissions of 110g/km aren’t bad either, making you wonder why the “demonization” of diesel is the fashionable thing to do. Those beautiful wood veneers, gleaming metal trims and the diamond-knurled gilt on the switchgear are tangible highpoints. It’s evident that Bentley is no longer willing to come second best to Aston Martin, or other producers of large GT coupés in any assessment of unadorned acceleration. And, for now, it needn’t worry. On a perfectly straight, dry road, and wholly regulated by its launch control technology, the 207mph Bentley Continental GT will get to 62mph in 3.7 seconds from rest. What’s more, it’ll manage 30mph to 70mph in under 3 seconds. Bentley Continental GT Alpine A110 The A110 bore a resemblance to its 1973 World Rally Championship-winning namesake. But this wasn’t an exercise in nostalgia - it was a total revival. And now it’s no longer a concept – it’s a car very much on sale today. The coupe is compact, with a miniature boot at the rear and another at the front. However, the Alpine clearly isn’t about practicality – it’s all about the driving experience. Climb inside, and the cockpit cocoons you. It’s small, but the sports seats in our test car supported us well. We also had ample legroom. Maserati Levante The unmistakable Levante design has reached new levels of sportiness in this top of the line model. The restyling is mainly focused on the lower front fascia and the rear bumper, but includes carbon fibre design cues and 22-inch forged aluminium “Orione” wheels. These are the largest ever fitted on a Maserati. The Trofeo is also the first Levante model equipped with Full LED adaptive headlights. Inside, designers have come up with elegant ways to create a distinctive environment. The sculpted sport seats feature a premium full-grain “Pieno Fiore” leather with a genuinely soft feel. This month in Lincolnshire Today we look at some of our favourite supercars. While none of them are easy to get a hold of, they’re certain to make a statement. Power, style and sophistication. It’s a little less lively at the front, although the Vantage’s shark-nose is aggressively appealing. What really works, though, are the perfect proportions. The two-seater is sinuous – almost hunter-like in the way it appears poised to pounce on unsuspecting prey. Under the metal, the up-to-date Vantage is like its sibling, the elegant DB11. Both models house the Mercedes-Benz- sourced 4.0-litre V8 lump. Mind you; the twin-turbo assisted engine has been tuned so that it feels like it’s always belonged in Aston Martins. Stomp your foot on the accelerator and the car will shoot you from zero to 62mph in 3.6 seconds. It will then propel you to 195mph - if you’re in a place you can do that without losing your licence, or your life. BMW 8 Series The Bavarian beast looks muscular and assertive in all the right areas, with 20-inch alloys and wide shoulders. But inside is where the new BMW 8 Series really shines. The fit and finish looks and feels luxurious, and you sit low to the ground with the centre console and the iDrive infotainment system towering beside you. Once on the road, the cabin is muted, and the ride is velvety smooth unless a pothole gets in the way. Even then, the car tries its best to cushion the many blows you get from our scarred British road surfaces. Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo Budget-conscious people are supposed to look at hybrids, so we had better get this out of the way first: this is a £140,000 car. Think of it as a super-estate for people who want all the power but want to protect the ice caps, too. It is almost a question of where to start. It is frighteningly powerful, producing 680PS and it has a zero to 62mph time of just 3.4 seconds. You will reach 124mph in only 12 seconds, and it tops out at 193mph. Oh, and it somehow manages 94mpg. With a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8. What’s not to like? If you are environmentally minded, it will even do over 30 miles on electric power alone, enough to get you to nearly 90mph. In short, it is brilliant – and that is in no small part down to all the Panamera’s trickery. Its active anti-roll bars limit body roll, and it has ceramic brakes as well as torque vectoring (which sends optimum amounts of power to each wheel). 66-67.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2020 11:43 Page 2Barton upon Humber Monday 3 February Nordic Walking, Waters Edge Visitor Centre Nordic Walking uses poles which mean upper body muscles are used as well as the legs, reducing pressure on hips and knees.
