This knowledge has opened the way to a possible future of those at risk being able to protect their health, through positive lifestyle changes and medical prevention. Other projects in the foundation’s funding pool of medical research are looking into methods to help hearts repair themselves, aiming for a future where fewer patients need to undergo transplant surgery. In the meantime, BHF is funnelling millions of pounds into research on reducing the risk of organ rejection and improving the long-term wellness of post-transplant patients. One project ongoing at King’s College London is determined to give children with heart conditions the best chance of survival. This follows on from research with Great Ormond Street Hospital into a new technique of valve implantation, using a catheter to deliver the valve to the heart through a blood vessel in the leg. Surgery to replace heart valves required open heart surgery two decades ago, but echoing its first steps promoting radical shifts in medical advancement, BHF has helped thousands of young and adult patients avoid this drastic measure altogether. Of course, you can be part of all of this by making cash donations or giving to your local British Heart Foundation store 53 Á © st ock. adobe .com/E lec tric E gg L td 48-53.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:42 Page 452 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY Charles H Hill Ltd. est. 1964 We are a family business and have been selling the best in outdoor power equipment at very competitive prices for over 50 years Moor Lane, Horsington, Woodhall Spa, LN10 5HH. Whether it’s history, heritage, arts, food or natural beauty, there’s plenty of reasons to pay a visit. Alively stopping point along the well-trodden Viking Way walkers’ route, Caistor rests on the northern edge of the picturesque, peaceful Wolds landscape. While the town is known for its gorgeous Georgian buildings, it dates back as an early Briton hill fort, later to become a stronghold developed by the Romans. These settlers were the first to give Caistor its name from the Latin ‘castra’ or ‘camp’, the town mentioned in the Domesday Book as Castre. Fragments of Caistor’s Roman history continue to reveal themselves. Back in 2010, for example, a 4th century cemetery was discovered after breaking ground for the town’s Co-op. The town lives in its history, with part of its original Roman wall still visible near the church of St Peter and St Paul, along with its old Grammar School building in memory of its famous pupils – including poet Sir Henry Newbolt. Despite a disastrous fire destroying the town square in 1681, the rebuild in the 18th and 19th centuries restored it to the one we can visit today, and trade began Nestled in Nestled in 54-57.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:46 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 55 CAISTOR to thrive. Sheep, cattle and horse fairs and craftspeople selling their wares reflects the bustle of Caistor’s popular weekly market, which still runs every Saturday at the Market Place. Following the construction of its House of Industry in 1800, growth in population led to the town gaining gas lighting in 1856. The Lincolnshire Chronicle wrote of this that Caistor was “a city on a hill whose light cannot be hid.” It continues to shine a light on its heritage, with the Caistor Civic Society leading visitors on guided walks to a few of its fifty-six listed buildings. The shorter Butter Market Walk tours down Bob’s Lane, up to the Old Session’s House, nineteenth century Fire Station and Grammar School. The two- hour Town Trail shows off the town’s Conservation Area, down Lucy’s Lane to reveal the Roman Wall, the Home Guard HQ, and the hidden secrets of the Tower of Caistor. Even where scenic walks are concerned, that’s just the beginning. The self-guided Caistor Walkabout leads you into the heart of the historic town at your own pace. And if you’re up for a ramble, the Caistor Challenge takes you twenty- five miles around the Lincolnshire Wolds, passing stunning views and eight villages and churches along the way. If you’ve already walked the Wolds and want to see them a bit differently, why not on horseback? The purpose-built Caistor Equestrian Centre accommodates riders of all levels and abilities, including those with special needs, commanding over thirty acres of the gorgeous countryside. Or you can get on your bike © st ock. adobe .com/ John Messingham nature 56 Á nature 54-57.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:46 Page 256 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY CAISTOR and ride them instead, with plenty of cycle trail guides available online and around the town. For rainy days, or if you’d rather relax as you discover Caistor’s rich history, you can’t do better than the Caistor Arts and Heritage Centre. Housed inside a conversion of a Victorian Methodist chapel originally built in 1842, a six- metre long timeline retells the town’s history from 8,000 BC up to the present day. A regular cycle of exhibitions brings further facets of historic Caistor life to visitors, and the gallery displays Lincolnshire artists working in a range of mediums. They also host workshops, live music and their popular Pudding Club, as well as providing a community hub with their library. Living up to Caistor’s pride in providing delicious dining experiences, the centre’s cafe serves breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, best enjoyed out on the terrace overlooking the Horsemarket. Plenty more charming cafes, tea rooms, and pubs pouring local ales offer warm hospitality and home cooked food, each with atmospheres perfectly matched to the surrounding landscape. Preserving its history as a market town, agriculture and farming remain important to daily life in Caistor, keeping its restaurants, inns and weekly market well-stocked in fresh local produce. 54-57.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:46 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 57 CAISTOR Craftspeople and hobbyists won’t find themselves wanting either, with arts and crafts, antique shops and even a dedicated model railway shop to inspire the next project or scratch that collectors’ itch, some inhabiting Caistor’s historic buildings. Situated in grade two listed The Loft, Bricktree Gallery provides space for creatives to show their art or host their own workshops, and a pre-loved clothing boutique caters for fashionistas. If fishing is your weakness, you’ll find your place at Caistor Lakes, open year round for casting your line at its three lakes amidst seven acres of Wolds serenity. The independently owned site welcomes caravans and motor homes, and just last year opened six lakeside lodges to its guests. This new accommodation earned a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice award, and no wonder with the option to fish from your own private decking, or soak in your private hot tub overlooking the lake views, all in the lap of five-star luxury. Such is Caistor’s compelling offering that it’s near impossible to fit everything into a single feature. Yet if you’ve not ever visited this charming Wolds village before – or haven’t ventured there since before the pandemic – now is the perfect time to visit. 54-57.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:46 Page 458 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY PETS CORNER Pet anxiety is more common than it seems, and thousands of pets are affected by it, resulting in the development of several undesired behaviours and unpleasant long-term conditions. Feeling stress and anxiety actually is a very normal and healthy response to potential threats and, like us, our pets feel the stress of unfamiliar or exhausting circumstances. Unfortunately, like in humans, if anxiety is left unnoticed and untreated it can stick with your pet and can in time become a very serious issue. If your furry friends start displaying unusual behaviours, if you’ve noticed changes in their body language and posture, if they don’t seem their usual selves, it might be a good idea to consult an expert. There are quite a few reasons why a pet might be experiencing anxiety and stress, and most times it is a response to a specific stimulus that appeared hostile and has triggered a flight or fight reaction. If ignored, this stimulus might lead to the development of more serious conditions that in the long run will disrupt the life of your pet and yours. The exposure to unfamiliar stimuli itself is not an issue; if it is a onetime situation, it will not lead to any consequences. However, longer or constant and frequent exposure could have a very negative influence on the health of your furry friend. There are several behaviours that could mean your pet has anxiety, some of which could seem normal, so it is fundamental to carefully evaluate the situation. Behaviours that could indicate the presence of anxiety and stress © st ock. adobe .com/Ser ge y Khamidulin It’s a very stressful world They cheer us up whenever we’re down, they greet us like no one else does and they love us unconditionally, but the fact that they help us ease our anxiety, doesn’t mean they don’t suffer from it themselves. It’s a very stressful world 58-60.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:47 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 59 PETS CORNER include excessive panting, trembling, pacing, shaking, urination and defecation in the house, avoiding eye contact, turning away, excessive lip licking, scratching, and yawning, hiding and fleeing. Additionally, there are other signs, like increased heart rate, lowering head and body, pinning ears back, tucking their tail between their legs, or wide eyes, that could help identify the presence of stress in your pet. Sometimes, stress and anxiety could even result in aggressive behaviours, towards themselves, or others, including humans and other pets, so it is important to identify the cause of these behaviours and act immediately. Anxiety in pets is normally connected to one of three causes: fear, separation or it can be connected to ageing or genetics. However, anxiety can in some cases be induced by boredom and frustration. Fear is one of the most common causes of anxiety in pets and it could be the result to exposure to loud noises like fireworks or thunderstorms, or it could be fear of specific environments, like vets and groomers, or new objects, people or other pets. Separation anxiety is fairly common but following the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown the number of pets suffering from it has increased significantly. After spending so much time with their owners, who are now returning to their pre-lockdown routines, pets, especially cats and dogs, are finding being alone incredibly difficult. In particular, all those lockdown pets, bought or adopted during lockdown, who have never experienced anything else other than time with their owners, are now feeling abandoned. Once the cause of anxiety has been identified, it is time to carefully desensitise your pet to whatever is causing the anxious response. Training is always a good method; it is important to focus on positive reinforcement and conditioning and avoid punishing and correcting undesired behaviours, which could actually lead to reinforcing them. Try to avoid unnecessary drama. If your pet is scared or anxious and comes to © st ock. adobe .com/ Cor e yOHar a 60 Á 58-60.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:47 Page 2Next >
