< Previous60 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY PETS CORNER you seeking validation, try not to shower them with attention and overdramatic reactions, this behaviour could make them think their response to the threatening stimulus is right and they will keep behaving that way. It is important to expose your pet to new stimuli from a young age, let them socialise with other pets and people and reinforce good responses to new stimuli when they are more susceptible to it. Similarly, always keep a positive, cheerful attitude, use calm and reassuring tones and give your pets treats to reward good behaviours. You could seek the aid of alternative solutions and nowadays there are several remedies that help you tackle your pet’s anxiety, like pheromonal dispensers, calming sprays and drops, weighted harnesses; these can help reassure your pets in moments of need and provide them with immediate relief. Sometimes it might be necessary to use medications, which can include natural remedies or veterinary medical drugs. Only recur to drugs when strictly necessary and always consult your vet first. Medications might be a viable option when anxiety is caused by genetic predispositions or ageing issues. Some breeds might be more prone to the development of certain behaviours, including aggressive ones, and in extreme circumstances vets might recommend the use of calming medicines. Similarly, older pets might be more affected by novel stimuli and their response to them could be very harming for their health. In these circumstances desensitisation rarely works, and it could be necessary to recur to medicines. It is also very important to deal with this kind of problem promptly and make sure you don’t encourage them any further. While situational anxiety can be handled quickly and with little resources, generalised and long-term anxiety is trickier to eliminate and might require a lot of effort, time and money to be handled, not to mention the fact that it can have serious consequences on the health of your little friend and yours. Pet anxiety is something to be very careful with and if your pet starts displaying unusual behaviours contact your vet and make sure you handle the situation quickly and in the best way possible, for you and your furry friend. © st ock. adobe .com/ pav elk ant 58-60.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:47 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 61 CARING Being alone is no easy task and sometimes even your own house might seem to be against you; too many steps, difficult access to bathtubs, tall surfaces in the kitchen, narrow doors. If you feel like your house is taking your independence away from you, it might be time to rethink the design of it and adapt it for easier living. Home adaptations are a great way to help elderly people, or people with mobility issues, have an easier life without the need to move to a care home. You can adapt your house to all your needs and make moving around and doing your daily activities on your own much easier, without the need to recur to any carers. There’s a wide range of adaptations that can be carried out and it all depends on what you need. The first thing to do is get in touch with your local council and ask for a care needs assessment. The council will send someone to assess the house and your condition and provide you with the alterations and home improvements that will best meet your Making your home you friendly 62 Á You don’t have to adapt to your house, it’s your house that needs to adapt to you and your needs. © st ock. adobe .com/Dais y Dais y 61-63.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:49 Page 162 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY CARING Funeral Services Our funeral homes provide the best facilities including private arrangement rooms and peaceful chapels of rest. We also provide a funeral dividend during this difficult time of bereavement. Getting up from your bed or your chair can sometimes be problematic and investing on an electrically powered chair or bed that recline and rise with the push of a button can make life a little easier and more comfortable. Similarly, fitting an electric chair, or simply a chair, extra handrails and a side opening in the bath or shower will make it much more comfortable and safer to get in and out. And if you have sight or memory issues and are worried about overfilling the tub or the sink, you can instal a smart plug that will alert you in case of flooding and overfills. The kitchen is the most important room when it comes to adaptations, you want to be safe and still be able to cook your meals or make yourself a nice cup of tea without any help. You might want to lower kitchen tops, add extra stools to support you while preparing your food, a kettle tipper to help you pour water and spike boards that will keep your food in place while you cut it. Additionally, it might be useful to get wide-handled cutlery, high rimmed plates, two handled cups and trolleys to move your food around easily. Eliminating wires, pointed edges, carpets, and clutter will help you make sure the house is safe to navigate, especially if you have sight problems. Item locators can help you find items that you struggle to find or can’t see. And make sure you have an updated smoke alarm and a good security system. requirements. It is important to be very honest about your condition and the struggles you encounter on a daily basis so that the alterations can be designed and tailored to you and your life. Home alternations can be big or small. You might want to instal an intercom system that lets you answer the door from the comfort of your chair and lets you check who is it at the door safely. Moving around the house could be another issue, especially if you have sight issues. It might be a good idea to have sensor triggered lights that will be triggered automatically when you enter a room; this could be useful at night, while going to the bathroom, or simply getting up. If you use a wheelchair, it might be a good idea to widen corridors and doorframes and change the direction doors open. Another good idea for easier moving around the house could be making sure you have all you need on the same floor, bathroom, bedroom and kitchen. Stairs are always a big problem and can easily become your worst enemy. Adding ramps and extra banister rails could help making going up and down the stairs easier, 61-63.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:49 Page 2LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 63 CARING 01775 711 959 www.countrycourtcare.com Spalding Common, Spalding, Lincolnshire, PE11 3AS Fenchurch House Care Home Fenchurch House provides the kind of care we’d want all of our loved ones to receive. Thanks to regular donations made by supporters, Bransby Horses were able to provide the best treatment, and now you would never know the long road to rehabilitation this pony has been on. Bransby Horses team leader, Lorraine, said: “On arrival at Bransby Horses, as well as needing careful nutrition to increase his weight safely, he also needed treatment for a high worm burden, a lice infestation and overgrown Bransby Horses rehabilitates young pony on the brink of death hooves. With extensive treatment, however, he turned a corner.
