The story of theGuildhall is also the story of Lincoln’sMayors – with one in placecontinuously for over eight hundredyears. This is the first guide published tothe Guildhall for over two decades, and the City of Lincolncommissioned Henry Ruddock to putit together – who himself plays apart of the story of the city as part ofthe Ruddock family who operate thefamous city store. He worked withBrian Taylor to compile the newbook, which takes as its startingpoint the previous history from JoeCooke MBE and Oscar Stewart. It isalso lavishly illustrated with manyphotographs, most taken by DickMakin.Despite its iconic role in thehistory of Lincoln, Henry’s not sureit’s always had the attention itdeserves. He tells us, “I’ve spoken toa number of people who tell methey’ve never actually been into theGuildhall, and certainly many peopleseem to walk under it withoutrealising what an outstandingbuilding it is – if they notice it at all.“The present Guildhall is nearlyfive hundred years old and the bookincludes stories about the buildingitself and what’s in it, including allthe treasures of Lincoln – like Snips’collar. Snips was in the window of ashop in Sincil Street during the war,and people would walk past andgive him a pat. Eventually theproprietor put up a sign toencourage people to give a penny inreturn for a pat, and over fifteenyears or so, this little dog ended upraising over five thousand pounds forcharity!“Although the book concentrateson the Guildhall there’s alsoinformation on some of the Mayors. We mention the Civil War, whenbrothers would find themselves onopposite sides of the conflict. I didn’trealise until I researched it what abrutal war that was and what aneffect it had on Lincoln. Anotherinteresting period was the latenineteenth century when the Mayorswere very dynamic people who tookbig risks and reaped big rewards.”The current Mayor, Karen Lee, iscarrying on the legacy by presentingcopies of the book to visitingdignitaries to the city. But you don’thave to be a VIP to get a copy – it’son sale at Ruddocks on Lincoln’sHigh Street, and online fromwww.ruddocksoflincoln.co.uk.Taking a BowA familiar part of Lincoln’s history has now been immortalised in anew book. Above the Bow is the story of Lincoln’s Guildhall, situated above the Stonebow, the ancient stone arch that straddlesLincoln High Street.“Although the bookconcentrates on the Guildhallthere’s also information onsome of the Mayors. This month,we talk to local author Margaret Dickinsonfrom Skegness. Having written countlessnovels about the county, Margaret has just released ‘Clippie Girls’ a taleof life on the trams during World War II. What do you love about Lincolnshire?Lincolnshire is often criticised for being flat. Actually, it isn’t – we have the Woldsand the Lincoln Edge, but I really love the flat areas and the feeling of space itgives. And where else would you get such magnificent skies? If you were to give advice to those who’ve never visited, what would it be?There are so many places to visit in Lincolnshire, it’s impossible to list them all.Lincoln, of course, with it’s wonderful cathedral; Stamford is another delightful oldtown and historic Boston and the Stump, the gentle Wolds, the intriguing littlemarket towns like Louth. There are so many places of historic interest too, BeltonHouse, Gunby Hall, The Museum of Lincolnshire Life in Lincoln, the NationalFishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby, Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at EastKirkby, The Village Church Farm in Skegness, Alford Manor House, GainsboroughOld Hall... where do you want me to stop? What’s the highlight of the year for you in the county? The obvious ones are the Lincolnshire Show, Lincoln’s Christmas Market and theSpalding Flower Parade, but for me the ‘highlight’ lasts a little longer. Living onthe coast, we have the best of both worlds - in the summer the visitors come intheir thousands and it’s great to see people having fun, especially the children onour golden beaches, but in the winter there’s nothing like a walk along thedeserted beach on a crisp winter’s morning!LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.net098:Layout 1 15/2/13 11:38 Page 1NRH EngineeringManufacturer of High QualityAgricultural MachineryWe are manufacturers of the NRH rangeof British built agricultural farm machineryWe now also carry out general fabrication and manufacture bespoke machineryVisit us at www.nrh-engineering.co.ukWhatever your requirements, call us, we will be happy to help...Call us now on 01759 318 775 Come and see us at The Airfield, Seaton Ross, York YO42 4NFdoes this happenwhen youopen yourutility bills?chooserenewableenergy■ 01427 787297■ info@freewatt.co.uk■ www.freewatt.co.uk■ Danes Farm, Stow, Lincoln LN1 2AJPV£+=099:Layout 1 15/2/13 11:39 Page 1Next >
