A regularfixture for decades, this year’s Ball, in the luxurious surroundings of the EPIC Centre at the Lincolnshire Showground, wasattended by some eight hundred people. Those attending enjoyed live music from The Kommitments, dancing until the early hours, and the excitement of a casino. Acandlelit meal, provided by CGC, received huge acclaim from the assembled guests. The organisers wish to thank Brewinand Dolphin, JH Walter and the other sponsors who ensured a fantastic evening. The winter weather did mean that guests weren’t able to join the Burton point-to-point the following morning, as traditiondictates, as that was rearranged for a later date – though at least that ensured plenty of time for guests to recover.080-081:Layout 1 15/2/13 11:24 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY81FARM & COUNTRY LINK - SOCIAL SCENESee more pictures of this event onlineVisit www.lincolnshiretoday.netto viewand purchase copies of the photographsFrom only£9.95deliveredLincolnshireTodayTHE REGION’S FAVOURITE COUNTY MAGAZINE080-081:Layout 1 15/2/13 11:25 Page 282LINCOLNSHIRETODAYPETS CORNERIt’s not just thanks to LincolnshireToday’s new pets pages but it does seemto be the case that more and morepeople are looking to welcome animalsinto their family. Indeed, a growingproportion of couples are looking toadopt pets and our need to nurture is asstrong as ever.Psychologists suggest that animals areincreasingly seen as surrogates forchildren for others it’s much valuedcompany. Breeders are now selectivelybreeding dogs to make them moreattuned to our emotions and to giveunconditional love. In addition, itsometimes seems that virtually everyinch of the internet is devoted to photosand videos of animals dressed up.Giving a pet a loving home is certainlywelcome, though it’s important toremember that a pet is a substantialemotional investment and, while youmay think it offers much of the fun ofkids with little of the responsibility, theywill take up a lot of your time andmoney. As Mark Singleton ofPets4Homes points out, “Owners needto be aware that pets don’t behave inthe same way as children, and it’s easyto fall into the trap of treating them as ahuman and ending up with all sorts ofbehavioural problems. Your dog or catisn’t a little person even if they act like atoddler. Some things – such as givingthem certain human foods – can bepositively dangerous.”But if you’re prepared for theexpense and the effort, there’snothing wrong with treating apet as a fully-fledged familymember. Families with adisposable income areincreasingly spoiling theiranimals – for manycelebrities’pets, forexample, they oftenseem toenjoy moreluxurioustransport and a longergrooming routine thanmost people. It often lookscomical but that doesn’t mean it’snecessarily a bad thing.Mark Singleton says, “Responsibilityas a parent and responsibility as a petowner are very much the samething. As long as they’re treated withcare, a pet can quite easily become a‘surrogate child’. And they’ve got tobe treated with care andrespect.”Just asyou’d makesure yourchildrenOne ofthe familyPets are increasingly taking over the role of children insome households082-083:Layout 1 15/2/13 11:26 Page 1small electronic chip the size of a grainof rice between the dog’s shoulderblades using a sterile needle. The chipcarries information about the dog, including the name and address of itsowner, and can be read using a simplescanner available at most veterinarysurgeries and dog rescue centres. Theprocedure doesn’t require ananaesthetic and isn’t any morepainful than a standard vaccination. The proposals have beenintroduced to cut the number ofstray dogs seen on the streets.Indeed, Government figures showthat more than 100,000 dogs aredumped or lost each year, whichcosts the taxpayer and charities £57million annually in treating andcaring for the animals. Sadly aboutsix thousand of these dogs have tobe put down every year.Jerry Green Dog Rescue is one ofLincolnshire’s major centres whichlook after lost and abandoned dogsuntil they’re rehomed, with rescuecentres in Broughton and Algarkirk. Its Chief Executive David Fouldssays, “We welcome compulsorymicrochip legislation, which issomething we’ve been supportingand lobbying for through theAssociation of Dogs and Cats Homes. All our centres are equipped tomicrochip dogs, as having a microchipgreatly increases the likelihood of lostpets being reunited with their owners. This year, in response to the passing ofthis Bill, we will carry out allmicrochipping for free to encouragepeople to abide by the law.”Microchipping dogs is an easy andeffective way to ensure that pets can besafe and enjoy a loving home. As long asowners are aware of their responsibilities, pets can almost certainly be one of thefamily.m. 07584 048207 e.amy@thedoghouselincoln.co.uka. The ‘S’ is the most significant outwardindication that the car is different to thealready acclaimed Vantage. Basically theengineering team at Gaydon looked atevery single performance attribute of thestandard model, from engine through totyres, to make this car deserving of thecoveted ‘S’ badge. The result is a puredriver-focussed package that exploits andemphasises the sporting nature of theiconic Vantage. The 4.7 litre V8 engine has beenmodified to deliver peak power of430bhp and a new automated manualseven speed gearbox, with paddle shiftson the steering wheel, enhancesdriveability and gives you increasedcontrol. Itlooked as though it belonged in a skip, andtook me eight years to get it on the road. Atleast the restoration kept me off the streets! Was it really as bad as all that?Put it this way - my wife Lesley saw it arriveon the low loader and said: “You paid goodmoney for that?!” Then she went inside andslammed the door!Did you do the restoration yourself?yes, it’s all my own work, except for thewoodwork. I got someone in to do that, but Idid work on his car in return. What was the original colour? It left the factory in British Racing Green, butthere was a lot of rust as well when I got it,and it had a tan leather interior.Do you travel far in it? Yes, we’ve driven to Croatia, and been toFrance three times, and to Scotland, as well aslocal trips and classic car runs. How reliable is it?Not very - but whenever it does go wrongwe can always fix it. It’s never had to berecovered! Petrol must be expensive, we suppose? It’s not too bad, as I’ve converted it to runon LPG, which is much less expensive thanpetrol – but a lot dearer than it used to be.Is this your only classic? No, I still have a Marina I bought new inAugust 1972. I’ve done lots of modifications, and it’s good for 130bhp now, but still givesme 40mpg.How much would it cost to get a MKIIJaguar?A ‘spares or restoration’ example could startat about £3,000, something you can drivetoday might cost between £20,000 and£30,000, and examples with special historycould double that. A 1961 example that tookpart in historic races in the late 90s hasrecently been advertised for more than£37,000.My other car’s a…Mk II JaguarDo you have a very special classiccar, something really out of theordinary?
