< PreviousPositively hair raisingDear Lincolnshire Today,I have to take issue with Mr Smith of Lincolnover the schoolboy who was sent home fromschool for his haircut. While I agree pupils tolearn need to abide by rules, disrupting a twelveyear old’s education for such an offence ishardly proportionate with the ‘crime’ – surelythey could have easily called his parents toschool to discuss the matter. Let us not lose sight of the fact that theheadteacher is encouraging pupils to judgeothers by the way they look and punish thosethat don’t fit in with their views of what is‘normal’. This was indeed a draconian measureand totally disproportionate to the offencecommitted.T SmithLincolnReaders’lettersWe’d love to hear from you. Who would have thought thatsomeone with a rare eye disorder and less than 5%vision in each eye could make it to become Britain’snumber one visually impaired alpine speed event skiracer? If she wins a medal in Sochi she will make historyby becoming the first ever British alpine skier to makethe podium at a Winter Paralympic Games. I must say I hadn’trealised that GM reduces use of pesticides andincreases food production in developing countries aswell as increasing marine biodiversity. As Mark said, either half the population will die or we need todouble food production. Perhaps they should investfunds enlightening us on the pluses as well as theminuses so we can all make a more informed choice..R ShoresStamfordSilent but deadlyDear Lincolnshire Today,I was intrigued to read that the University of Lincoln has launched their“Shush!” campaign to encourage students to keep the noise down when theyreturn from a night out. That’s all very well but as far as I’m concerned, they’dhave been better off launching a campaign for them to improve their otherbehaviour. At least hearing them shout while walking down the road is a briefinconvenience – having to put the rubbish back in the bin or replant flowers thathave been trodden on can be hugely unpleasant and time-consuming.G JamesLincolnPICKOF THEMONTH10 LINCOLNSHIRETODAY010:Layout 1 14/2/14 12:56 Page 1Could you work for this magazine? We are actively seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our already successful advertising sales team.Your role would include liaising with the various business owners around Lincolnshire on the best ways to promote and advertise their business to ourreaders, and the region itself. Eddie told us, “I hadn’t puta pair of jumping skis on for seventeenyears so it was nice to do a bit of jumpingagain. It was really tough going for thecelebrities. A ten metre jump doesn’t soundvery big but when you’re stood at the top ofit, it’s steep enough! I was getting a bitjealous actually, because the celebrities weretaking part in skeleton, speed skating, slalomand I was thinking, I want to do those!”One of the main aims of the SportsmansClub is to support sporting talent and theimportance of funding is something Eddie isonly too aware of. “When I was in theOlympics, 99.9% of the funding was downto me. I got odd jobs – waiting on tables, shovelling snow, washing up – and I wassleeping in cars and cowsheds, and it was areal struggle, but for me getting to theWinter Olympics was my gold medal – and Igot there! I was Britain’s first and last skijumper, and 26 years on people stillremember my name and they can’tremember the name of the person who wonthe gold medal!”It’s less likely such a thing will happentoday, though. “After Calgary they decidedthat the guy who finished 58th shouldn’tget more attention than the guy who won,so they brought in what in America they callthe Eddie the Eagle rule, where you’ve gotto reach a certain criteria to get into theGames. Eddie says, “We’ve got ice rinks,so there should be no reason why we can’t becompetitive in sports on ice, and we’ve done that incurling and figure skating. It’s the sports like skijumping and the slaloms where we struggle. Althoughwe’ve got indoor ski slopes in the UK you really need toget on the slopes to succeed.”Eddie is still much in demand to talk about hisincredible story. “I do a lot of after dinner speaking andmotivational talks, talking about how I got into skijumping. I’ve spoken all over the world, I’ve been toScandinavia and Australia, and I never thought I’d stillbe doing it a quarter of a century after the event.”Eddie delighted the audience in Lincoln, and alsopresented funding from the Sportsmans Club to JohnPettinger of Waddington, who has been tipped as oneto watch in hockey, having been selected to take partin the England Under 17 training squad – a greatexample of how the Club continue to support freshlocal talent.Richard and Nigel Bottom, Tony Chambers,Geoff TaylorNeil Goddard, Phil Grundy, RodTaylor, Paul Coldron, EricGledhill, John CopseyPeter Carr, Mike Palethorpe, BernardRoss, Patrick Sullivan, Roy FroggattRon Burnett andRick WrayEddie Edwards withJosh Pettinger012-013:Layout 1 14/2/14 14:24 Page 2Call today for a friendly chat with Maria, Jane or Helen 01482 896980Drapers Lane, Hedon, East Yorkshire HU12 8FJwww.holdernessgrange.co.ukBuybackGuaranteedHOLDERNESS GRANGE LIFESTYLE VILLAGEAt just£110,000Buyback at Holderness Grange offers you the opportunity to purchase a previously owned stunning2-bed apartment for £110,000. There are several types and causes of urinary incontinence:Don’t suffer in silenceWOMEN'S HEALTHIf you think urinary incontinence only affects older women, think again. Bladder control issues affect younger, active women as well. Are you one of them? There are four kinds of these problems:1. Stress incontinence is that little leak that happens when you cough, laugh, sneeze – any motion that stresses or puts too much pressure on the bladder. Stress incontinence can result from pregnancy and childbirth, when pelvic muscles and tissues can be stretched and damaged. It can also occur from high-impact sports, as a result of ageing or from being overweight2. Urge incontinence or “overactive bladder” is a bit different – it's the urgent need to go, followed by an involuntary loss of urine – with anything from a few seconds to a minute's warning. It is thought to be due to spasms of the bladder muscles. Conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease or a urinary tract infection can cause urge incontinence3. Mixed incontinence means you have more than one type of incontinence, with stress and urge incontinence being the typical mix4. 3ZIV¾S[MRGSRXMRIRGI-J]SYGERXIQTX]]SYVFPEHHIVIZIV]XMQI]SYKSXSthe toilet and experience a frequent or constant dribbling of urine, you have SZIV¾S[MRGSRXMRIRGIMiss AgarwalMiss Agarwal joined Lincoln County Hospital (LCH) in January 2011 as Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.
