< PreviousWoodhall Spa welcomesthousands of visitors today –while paying tribute to the past30 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYWOODHALL SPAWoodhall Spa is absolutely packed withhistory – and this year it has extraresonance as we mark the hundredthanniversary of the start of the First WorldWar. Memories of the past permeatearound the town, but one of the thingsit’s particularly great at is bringing historyto life and there’s a host of events thattake place throughout the year. The most famous connection betweenWoodhall Spa and Britain’s war effort isthat of the 617 Squadron – theDambusters - who were based at RAFWoodhall Spa and the Petwood Hotelwas commandeered by the Air Ministryto serve as the Officer’s Mess. WoodhallSpa is proud of its role in the heart ofbomber county and, on the occasion ofthe seventieth anniversary of their arrivalin Woodhall Spa and their legendary raid,a host of events over the past fewmonths has commemorated its vital rolein World War II. The 1st AirlandingBrigade was also based in the townleading up to the operation at Arnhem, which was part of Operation MarketGarden. The Great War is also beingcommemorated in Woodhall Spa thanksto the work of the Wartime WoodhallCommittee, a group of local people whoare working in conjunction with theCottage Museum to mark theanniversary. They’re inviting people toshare their memories of friends andfamily members who fought in bothtwentieth century conflicts, whetherthrough storytelling or by loaning letters, photos and medals to the museum (whowill make sure they’re well looked after). The result of their search will be anexhibition planned for the museum thissummer which will illustrate the sacrificesmade by people from all walks of life andput into context Woodhall Spa’s militaryhistory. Later in the autumn too there’llbe a special weekend ofcommemorations to mark seventy yearssince Arnhem. The Museum itself isworth a visit at any time, though, and it’llbe opening its doors for the new seasonat Easter. One of the other ways in whichWoodhall Spa pays tribute to its history isvia its forties festival which over the pastfew years has become one of the popularevents in the town’s calendar – and it’s inA sense of historyWoodhall Spa welcomesthousands of visitors today –while paying tribute to the pastA sense of historyOffering a warm welcome to Woodhall Spa neighbours and visitorsWe look forward to welcoming youPetwood Hotel, Stixwould Road Woodhall Spa, LN10 6QGwww.petwood.co.uk Telephone 01526 352411030-032:Layout 1 14/2/14 14:46 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY31WOODHALL SPAPETER SCOTT1 THE BROADWAY WOODHALL SPA 01526 353935 Open 7 dayswww.peterscottshoes.co.ukNAKEDBY HOTTERNATURAL£59BARE£59CHARLES H. Thefestival is a poignant blend of entertainment and illumination anda growing number of people from further afield now come toWoodhall to take part. One other part of Woodhall that continues to attract visitorsfrom across Lincolnshire is the hugely popular Kinema in theWoods. This is the picture-going experience as it was in the past, with plush seats and the sounds of the organ replicating the dayswhen a trip to the movies was a very special occasion. It’s not amuseum, though - its programme includes the latest films and itmakes for a real antidote to the familiar multiplexes. It’s the blend of the past and present that makes Woodhall Spaso appealing, and perhaps nowhere is this better illustrated that atThe Petwood Hotel, home of theDambusters, has been the focusof anniversary celebrations32 The GreatWar is also beingcommemorated inWoodhall Spa thanksto the work of theWartime WoodhallCommittee030-032:Layout 1 14/2/14 14:46 Page 232 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYWOODHALL SPAT: 01526 353710E: info@woodhallcountrypark.co.ukwww.woodhallcountrypark.co.ukFacilities include: 3 fishing lakes bird hides shop laundryDiscover Woodhall Country Park,a five star luxury camping & touring experience set in 80 acres in the heart of LincolnshireBOOK TODAYopens 1st March 2014 the new Inn at Woodhall Spa.
