< Previous30 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYWOODHALL SPAWoodhall spa nowadays is well known as an idyllicretreat which boasts a strong aviation heritage, but it maysurprise some to hear that it once paid host to only themost wealthy and powerful – a holiday resort and healthspa with a clientele most exclusive. It was even frequenteda number of times by the British Royalty. One of the most aesthetically appealing aspects ofWoodhall Spa is the way the town is laid out, with verdantforests and long, winding roads. This was actually theresult of investors and architects in the 19th century, whodecided that to preserve its resort-like status, Woodhall Spashould never have “streets,” but rather avenues andbroadways. This is a feature that has continued to this day,and any visitor to the area will soon recognise the tree-lined avenues of the village, as well as the Broadway itself. The area has roots in more recent history too thanks toit being the location from which the 617 Squadron of theRAF flew from – more commonly known as theDambusters, of which their memorial and history can bevisited. VisitingWoodhall SpaWoodhall Spa is famous, and with good reason. We look at what made the area whatit is, from the 1800’s through to 2017.30-33_Layout 1 21/02/2017 11:25 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY31Situated by the first fairway of the Bracken course at theNational Golf Centre, Woodhall Spa – home of the EnglishGolf Union, The Dower House Hotel is an elegant andintimate country house hotel, full of character and charm!•Ideal wedding venue •Sunday lunches •Afternoon teas• Golfing packages • Corporate hire • Function hireThe Dower House Hotel offers a delightful choice of setting for your wedding, and isa unique venue to hold an event, or celebrate that special occasion. No longer only for the richand famous, Woodhall Spa is now a haven visited by manyand still offers much of the services it did in the 19thCentury – and much more as well. The Woodhall Spa Golf club is famed across the region, and a popular destination for enthusiasts. Ranked 25th inGolf World Magazine’s World Top 100 Golf Courses, it’sknown as one of the top-rated heathland golf experiencesin the country. Each year, golfers come down to visit thesite and also to stay in one of the area’s hotels, many ofwhich are Edwardian in design and boast their own fameand history dating back centuries. It is because of these elegant and beautiful statelyhomes – and the beautiful surroundings of Woodhall Spa -that lead many couples to visit for their weddings. Theappeal comes in the visuals, and the fact that at anymoment it’s possible to take a walk off the main road andWOODHALL SPA32 Á30-33_Layout 1 21/02/2017 11:25 Page 2Weigall in 1913. These gardens werefamous at the time and attracted visitorsfrom across the country but fell intodisrepair in post-war Britain after the hotelhad been requisitioned by the RAF. Now,however, under the supervision of DirectorEmma Brealey, the gardens have beenrestored to what they may have lookedlike over a hundred years ago. ThePetwood are, of course, quick to welcomevisitors to see the efforts for themselves. As Emma says; “Whether providing abeautiful setting for a relaxing drink onthe terrace or the perfect backdrop forfamily photographs, we want the gardensto be enjoyed by everyone.”This spirit of restoration, rejuvenationand relaxation suffuses Woodhall Spa andis visible in everything it does. As thespring months start to bring in warmerweather, and we move towards summeritself, the Jubilee Park comes into its own. With its own outdoor heated swimmingfind yourself lost in beautiful woodland orsleepy country roads. Woodhall Spa is alocation which does its best to co-existwith the surroundings, rather thandominate them.A perfect example of this can be foundin the Kinema. This is the picture-goingexperience as it was in the past, withplush seats and the sounds of the organreplicating the days when a trip to themovies was a very special occasion. It’snot a museum however, and itsprogramme includes the latest films and itmakes for a real antidote to the familiarmultiplexes.Much of the good work in WoodhallSpa in recent years has been thanks to thecommunity and the people who live andwork there. One example of such is therecent restoration of the Petwood Hotel’sgardens, based on the original designsfrom famous landscape artist Harold Peto, originally commissioned by Lady Grace32 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYWOODHALL SPApool, camping and caravanning sites aswell as a bowling green, croquet lawn, cricket field and more.
