As the weather (hopefully) warms up, andthe layers come off, we notice that all of the winterhibernation has paled our skin. With tan now longgone and still so long until the summer holidays, it’sa popular time to think about hitting the bottle …the self-tanning bottle to be specific. The benefits of tanning are not just about lookinggood, there’s a huge psychological impact too.Getting a golden glow can even out skin colour, reduce how much make up we wear, make us feelthinner and more toned, and remind us of ourlovely, relaxing summer holidays. So what are your tanning options?Spray tanSpray tan is a salon treatment where tan solutionis misted onto the skin under the direction of aprofessionally trained tanner. Experts in getting itright, your tanner ensures your skin is prepared withmoisturiser and that the tan is evenly applied. Theresults last for 7-10 days, and you can choose acolour from natural to dark depending on the shadeyou want. Most salon tans go onto the skin with alight tint which develops, getting darker over 4-6hours. During that time you should ideally wearloose clothing and avoid skin contact with wateruntil eventually showering off to reveal your newtanned skin. Cream TanAlso a salon treatment, but a more luxuriousversion of spray tan. This takes longer than sprayapplication but often the results last longer andwear off more evenly. In this treatment you relax ona treatment couch while the tanner ensures yourskin is exfoliated and moisturised then massages thetanning product evenly into the skin. SunbedGetting some colour from UV rays has both positiveand negative effects. Small exposure can boost yourmood, increase your vitamin D level and reduce skinbreakouts. It’s also proven to be excellent for treatingdepression linked to seasonal affective disorder (SAD).But beware, too much UV exposure can increase risksof skin cancer and accelerate skin ageing. If you choseto tan in this way build your tan slowly, use protectivecreams to control exposure and increase theantioxidants in your diet to fight any negative effects. DIYUnderstandably terrifying with magazines, TVshows and online searches showing the oftenhilarious results of getting home tanning wrong. Itcould be mouse, gel, spray or cream, but if youdecide to give try tanning there’s a few things to bearin mind. First of all you must exfoliate. There are a fewchoices of how to do this but the result is the same;they remove dead, dry superficial skin from the skin’ssurface which would otherwise hold on to excessivetanning product and result in dark patches anduneven wear off of colour. Ideally exfoliate the day of,or the day before tanning and then continue toexfoliate every 2-3 days after the tan to encourageand even fade. Moisturising is key; common problem areas forstreaking, uneven colour are the dry body areaswhich grab onto tan such as hairline, face, knees, underarms, ankles and hands. Moisturise all of theseareas directly before you apply the tan.It takes practice, and often a few mistakes, to getthe perfect result so make sure your first attempt isn’tthe day before a big occasion. There are great onlinetutorials to help you out or if you’re really nervousstart with some professional treatments to see thetechniques in action and get some personalised tips, then you just need to top up the colour at home. We’ve more than passed the point ofno return for New Year’s resolutions, and withthe cold still creeping around, doubtless manywill still be clinging to the comfort of carbs andcovers. Perhaps the single biggest misconceptionsurrounding healthy eating, exercise or any otherwellbeing practice is the idea that it will work foreveryone. How can anybody reasonably thinkthat one person’s regime might work foranother? Imagine if the same kind of thinkingwas prevalent in medicine, it would be utterchaos, and yet it’s a pervasive chain of thought. Though longer hours, shift work and zero hourcontracts have done away with the classic 9 to 5in many places, there are those whose week fallsinto this structure. When it comes to having abinary schedule, it’s easy to fit a workout orrunning routine before and/or after work. Manypeople save up their exercise needs for a big blitzon the weekend, and recent evidence hasbacked up the validity of the ‘weekend warrior’approach. It’s more than possible to achieve theweek’s exercise needs, and atone for a few daysof sedentary, by cramming it all into Saturdayand Sunday alone. For others, it can be a littlemore difficult. Nobody said keeping fit was easy, and there isno shortage of challenges to overcome, whetherit’s looking after your little ones, priorcommitments or just a massive workload. Asanyone can attest, it’s starting that is so often thehardest part. It’s easy to fall into the self-perpetuating cycle of being put off exercise forfeeling bad and feeling bad for not exercising. The endorphin rush from any exercise is rewardenough for some, but the benefits don’t stopthere. Everyone will be familiar with the typicaladvantages, but there are others to consider. Itcan be difficult staying in every night whilefinding something to keep you entertained, andthis often results in buying another box set, abottle of wine or – heaven forbid – a takeaway.Exercise is inexpensive, or often free, with onlyminimal expenditure for some half decentequipment. While there’s a gym to suit everybudget, running, cycling, swimming and ballgames are all low cost ways to stay trim and feelgreat. The saying goes that anything worth havingisn’t easy, and without a sense of having earnedan accomplishment, any success can feel forced. This is absolutely the case with fitness, asexercising isn’t always easy, and sometimes it canbe a real effort to drag yourself out, but theendorphin high and the good it does youphysically and spiritually are too good to pass up.There’s a whole county out there, so get out andstart feeling your best. Keeping fit is one of life’s hardest commitments, but it’salso one of the most rewarding.YourbestYOU48-49_Layout 1 21/02/2017 11:51 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY49HEALTH & FITNESS48-49_Layout 1 21/02/2017 11:51 Page 2Next >
