< Previous60 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COUNTY MOTORING T here’s an exciting release schedule for cars over the coming months, from the Porsche 718 GTS rolling out in April, to the new Aston Martin DBZ arriving in summer. That’s to say nothing of the luxury electric offerings ahead such as the Audi e-tron GT and the Ford Mustang Mach-E, an electric SUV inspired by the Mustang – both arriving later this year. Here we profile some of the biggest and most highly anticipated launches coming up. Jaguar F-Type Believe it or not, the Jaguar F-Type turns eight this year. Needless to say, it was in need of an upgrade and the 2020 version is more than just a facelift – this is a complete overhaul with new exterior design and new interior technology and Jaguar F-Type & Speed style The new crop of license plates launch this March and continue through to the end of August. New cars bought and registered between these dates will be sporting one of these new 20 series plates. So what new cars are launching and being showcased during this period? 60-63.qxp_Layout 1 24/02/2020 11:31 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 61 COUNTY MOTORING trim. Outside, the body is lean and elegant and, inside, there’s state-of-the- art driving systems. With a new high- resolution 12.3” Interactive Driver Display, drivers have easy access to media, phone and navigation. The interior and body are all well and good, but what about under the hood? The biggest surprise is the disappearance of the V6. Instead, the 2020 model will come with a choice of either two 5.0-litre supercharged V8 power levels, or the continuing entry- level 2.0-litre turbocharged Ingenium four-cylinder engine. In any case, you’re getting a lot of horsepower for your money with the entry level at 296bhp and the two higher engine choices putting out 444bhp and 567bhp respectively. Jaguar claims it’s the most thrilling of its petrol engines and features innovative technologies for improved fuel consumption and CO2 emissions without compromising on performance. It also boasts an Active Sports Exhaust system so that drivers have the option of releasing the rumble at all engine speeds. Available with configurable and adaptive dynamics, and in coupe or convertible, there’s a huge range of customisability with the new and improved F-Type. The model is available now and if bought before 1 April, drivers can beat the road tax increase of up to £425. Maserati Alfieri It’s fitting that the Maserati Alfieri is launching at the Geneva International Motor Show taking place in March as it was first previewed at the show as a concept car back in 2014. Of course, since then there’s been some major changes and design overhauls. Although details are understandably scare at present, what we do know for certain is that the car will have petrol and pure- electric powertrain options. Press images would also seem to confirm it will be a mid-engine supercar. Readers will have to wait on tenterhooks with the rest of us until the show to learn more about this much-anticipated model. Although we’ll get a good look shortly, the production version won’t follow until 2021/22. 62 Á Maserati Alfieri 60-63.qxp_Layout 1 24/02/2020 11:31 Page 262 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COUNTY MOTORING Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 For the eighth version of the iconic Corvette, the engine has been moved from the front and moved to the middle. It might ruffle a few feathers among diehards, but rest assured, this is the most powerful Stingray ever produced. It’ll use a naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 engine with 495bhp taking it from 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds and with a top speed of 195mph. Fans will also notice the sheer difference in design from previous generations with only a single part carried over from its predecessor. It’s a sleek re-design with hidden door handles for a cleaner appearance and improved hydrodynamics. It’s looks stylish as both a coupe or a convertible but it’s the latter where drivers will have the most rewarding experience. The interior isn’t like anything you’ve ever seen in a Corvette before with an attractive cockpit designed for an immersive driving experience. There are three seat combinations to pick from so drivers can be assured there’ll be a set-up that’s right for them. Traditionally, Corvettes are confined to left-hand drive markets, but it’s understood that the right-hand versions of the C8 are expected to arrive in the UK not long after it goes on sale in the US this spring. Bentley Flying Spur There’s no denying the pure luxury and sophistication of the Bentley Flying Spur, which has typically been used for chauffeuring. The new 2020 model shares only its name with its predecessor and boasts exceptional style and features that begs to be driven itself. If the £165,000 price tag doesn’t put you off, then this could be the luxury vehicle you’ve been looking for. All the luxurious touches are there from the 22-inch wheels and the leather and wooden veneer interior, but that’s enough about its looks, how about its power? The high performance 6.0-litre W12 engine produces a whopping 626bhp and 664 pound-feet of torque, going 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds – 0.7 seconds faster than its predecessor – with a top speed of 207mph. Functionality will also be a big draw here with 360-degree camera and auto park. With the launch of this Continental GT sibling, Bentley is rolling out a challenger to the new Rolls-Royce Ghost launching later this year whilst also appealing to loyal customers and wooing new fans. Not an easy task, but with the maker claiming that the new Flying Spur represents a “quantum leap in technology, performance and innovation”, Rolls-Royce should be afraid. The model is expected sometime in the coming months. The history itself has led me to the area and has led the area into the songs. [Lincolnshire] wasn’t necessarily somewhere I was looking towards, I was more just following their [the Pilgrim’s] story, guided by history. When the separatists were coming, this was the epicentre of it all. It made sense to follow that journey. This is a concept tour about the Pilgrims and the journey they took – the leap of faith and so I think it’s important to follow that from the birthplace of it all really. Are you hoping to introduce people to this story through the album? It’s obviously a really important story and I think this is a good window for those that don’t know anything about it. Because I met members of the Wampanoag Tribe when I was over in America, that had a huge impact on me and the way A Pilgrim’s Tale is told. That perspective is very much at the forefront of the album. It’s really part of the story that people don’t know about and I think that’s really important. The whole album starts off with this premonition song from a young native American girl waking up and seeing these island invaders with fire in their eyes and that’s quite a powerful image. I think it’s important to be a bit shocking and thought the album was a good chance to make a statement. It takes the listener on the journey and that was the idea. It’s quite a big undertaking and a huge responsibility. What was original inspiration behind the album? There’s a folk singer who I knew from Plymouth called Cyrill Tawney who made an album called The Mayflower Garland for the 350th anniversary and it just gave me the idea to represent it for the 400th. That was the seed and then I approached [Plymouth’s] Theatre Royal. A lot of these songs will play a part of a production called This Land. It’s quite a separate entity, but that’s where the songs will take place again after this tour. I was working with a director, Nick Stimson [Theatre Royal’s Associate Director], and we were very much trying to iron out and concentrate the right story. That’s where I discovered the ‘Great Iron Screw’ and the challenges they [the Pilgrims] were up against. We were both doing lots of reading and sharing the research. Is this your usual approach to song- writing? As much as I’m into local history, this is quite a specific album with narration. It’s something that I’ve never really locked myself away and approached before. So it was the unknown really. Will I do something like this again? I’ll probably do something completely opposite next time. There’s certain constraints when you’re writing something like this, I would say, because of the responsibility of telling the story, that weight on your shoulders, but I think it would be good to shake some of that off in the future and just loosen up and go back to world of music rather than lyrics. We’re touching on US history here whereas you’ve been rooted in the British tradition. Does this represent a new direction going forward? Interesting. I’ve not really looked at it like that, but yeah. Ultimately, what we’d like to do is take this show to America. Somehow play it in Boston [Massachusetts] to finish the story. So visiting all these places of significance and finishing sometime in September or November this year and maybe playing somewhere is Massachusetts. Fingers crossed. I think it would work really well and I think people would really appreciate it over there. Any final words about Lincolnshire? [Lincolnshire] is great for music, isn’t it? I think it’s a solid music county. I’m always chatting to [folk singer] Martin Simpson about it, who’s a big Lincolnshire fan, that’s his roots. It’s always great to come here. A Pilgrim’s Tale We chatted with Seth Lakeman at St Andrew’s Church in Immingham about the inspiration and history behind his new album, A Pilgrim’s Tale, the importance of The Mayflower story and the role that Lincolnshire played in it. 66-67.qxp_Layout 1 24/02/2020 11:35 Page 1A cclaimed singer-songwriter Seth Lakeman has forged a career of turning local history and English folk stories into songs that pull on the heartstrings as much as they get you up and moving. On his latest album, A Pilgrim’s Tale, he takes on the journey of the Separatists from England to the New World with the accompany tour taking him to places with historical significance to that story in the 400th anniversary of the journey of The Mayflower. The second sold-out date brought him to St Andrews Church in Immingham, a beautiful 800- year-old building with important roots to the Pilgrim’s plight. One of the Separatists, Francis Hawkins, is buried in the graveyard, and more than twenty of the town’s streets are named after Mayflower passengers. A better setting to hear A Pilgrim’s Tale is hard to imagine. Seth and his band – comprising Benji Kirkpatrick on guitar, bouzouki, banjo and drums, bassist Ben Nicholls and Alex Hart on back-up vocals, electric guitar and harmonium – gathered at the head of the nave to an intimate crowd. The first half focussed entirely on the new album, played in full without any interruptions and complete with Paul McGann’s pre-recorded narration. Each new song immersed the audience into the story which focussed as much on the Pilgrim’s as the native Americans they encountered. The sound of Seth’s distinctive baritone and trademark vibrato reverberated off the church walls. Behind the band, projections of the historic journey were displayed, adding more depth to the entire experience, together with the lights perfectly in tune with the shifting moods of the music. Standout songs included ‘Sailing Time’, ‘The Great Iron Screw’ and ‘Foreign Man’ and culminated in the evocative instrumental ‘Mayflower Waltz’ before intermission. The second half saw Seth in his usual jovial form, bantering with the audience, and leading his band into a set of some of his most beloved songs. They were almost entirely taken from fan-favourite albums Kitty Jay and Freedom Fields with the audience singing, clapping and stomping along to classics including ‘The Bold Knight’ and ‘Lady of the Sea’ and his take on the traditional ‘The Setting of the Sun’. The audience were also treated to a new song – newer even than A Pilgrim’s Tale – a jig called ‘Changes’ dedicated to the farmers. With the addition of a Jew’s harp, it was a jaunty, energetic song that would have had people on their feet if there’d been room enough. Finishing the set off was a spine- tingling rendition of ‘Kitty Jay’ that demonstrated Seth’s prowess with the violin, the sound was pure and stirring, the bow moving so fast it was a blur. That would have been a fitting ending alone, but the three-song encore was more than welcome. In such a historic setting, the album came alive, allowing the story of the Pilgrim’s to wash over the audience. Entertaining and awe-inspiring, no doubt, but also educational and how many acts can claim that? A Pilgrim’s Tale is available now.
