Send your rib-ticklers to d.cuthbert@blmgroup.co.uk Council bosses bet on classical music to beat anti-social behaviour You know what might help deter anti-social behaviour in Grimsby town centre? More police? Investing in services and rehabilitation? No, classical music. Apparently playing Mozart or Mendelssohn through speakers to curb anti-social behaviour is being considered for Riverhead Square (which has now been remained the Plaza). It’s one of the measures being considered as North East Lincolnshire council bosses access a new CCTV network. We’re not sure blasting Brahms or Bach is going to stop street fights, stabbings or muggers, but it’s got to be worth a shot, right? Another month has passed us by so that means another edition of our By the watercooler series where we share some of the funniest news stories to pass this way. What a waste Almost 5,500 tonnes of litter was collected by North East Lincolnshire Council’s (NECL) small street cleansing team in 2019. Ten tonnes of waste was recovered from the River Freshney alone. While clearing fly-tips and emptying bins, the team came across more than a few unusual items including a jet sky in Beelsby, bottles of urine in an A180 layby and a myriad of mattresses. Still, that’s preferable to the dead animals, dirty nappies, needles and vomit the team also have to deal with. © Shutterstock/twistah © NECL © Shutterstock/DutchScenery Nothing says thank you like vegan chicken South Kesteven District Councillors recently received a hamper of vegan chicken from animal rights campaigners after they refused plans for a 270,000 bird poultry farm. Here’s the thing, councillors didn’t shoot down the plans for any welfare concerns – despite PETA launching a petition against the six-shed farm – but for financial reasons. Plans were rejected in the face of threats of high costs if the application went to appeal. One can’t help but think of the vegan hamper as more passive aggressive than thankful but, in any case, the campaigners got what they wanted. Now time to safeguard the world’s 19 billion other chickens.
