Our days are extremely busy between work and all the responsibilities we have, chores and duties, appointments and commitments that completely take over our days giving us very little time to do what we enjoy. But sometimes even if we do find time to squeeze a little workout in our schedule, it feels like yet another chore, forced to follow a very strict timetable, taking all the fun away from it. Throw in the winter months too, that with the lower temperatures and the shorter days make you prefer a nice, cosy day in on the sofa to the gym. Staying motivated is extremely difficult and finding what makes you want to exercise regularly is key to stay active and show up to your workout even on those days when you’d rather say in bed. Spring is almost here though and longer, warmer days will soon take over and make it more pleasant to exercise, not just outside but at the gym too. However, it is not all about sunny days, the motivation to workout needs to come from within you and if you’ve fallen out of love with your fitness routine it might be time to assess the situation and evaluate your motivation. If you’re not enjoying working out anymore, if it feels like a boring chore, it might be time to change your routine up a little. Always try to add new exercises and find new, exciting routines or even sports to do. Mix it up and alternate if you think that will help. With the higher temperatures coming, you might even want to start planning outside workouts; fresh air and different Falling for fitness © st ock. adobe .com/Di ND ABCREA TIVITY It’s easy to lose focus and motivation for fitness, especially in winter. But with spring just around the corner, take a little time to rethink the way you work out, find what works best for you and you will fall for fitness again in no time. again 42-43.qxp_Layout 1 22/02/2022 09:36 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 43 HEALTH & FITNESS Simply Running is an independent sports shop supplying everything a runner needs, from a running enthusiast to someone who is just starting out 100 St Peters Avenue, Cleethorpes, North East Lincs. Do something you love and enjoy. Don’t workout just for the sake of staying fit, find a sport, a routine you enjoy doing; if you don’t have fun while exercising you will find all possible excuses to avoid doing it. Loving what you do is the key to find your motivation and it will make it a lot easier for you to achieve the results and goals you have set for yourself. Try to create a routine for yourself, it can help you gain and build up confidence. A routine lets you walk in at the gym with something to focus on and keeps the distractions of the outside world away; you have your routine to follow and you are not interested in anyone or anything else. However, ask a professional trainer to help you create your routine, they will help you find what type of workout is best for you and will help you reach your goals. On the other hand, don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone. Always sticking to the same treadmills, dumbbells and exercise routines can get boring and tedious; try new workout routines, or implement your current one with new exercises, or increase the difficulty of it, use heavier weights, or add a couple of extra push ups, it might feel exhausting and scary at first, but it will actually give you extra confidence. Pushing your limits can help you know yourself better and build your physical and mental strength, it can help you move up your goals and reach for better results. It might be a good idea to find yourself a fitness partner, or even a group of people you can exercise with. Friends will inspire and challenge friends and create a fun environment that will push one another to keep working out and stay active even on days when motivation is impossible to find. Friends might also push you to create some healthy competition between each other which, if taken with the right spirit, can be fun and always push you a little extra harder and help you reach your goals. Think about the goals you want to achieve and the results you want to see. Whatever they are, whether they are about weight loss, increasing strength, general fitness or improving your mental health, your goals are important and will be your main source of motivation and focus. Think about what changes you want to see in yourself and use your workouts to reach them. But most importantly, be kind to yourself. If one day you don’t feel like working out, don’t feel guilty, if you want to indulge in a lazy day in, a meal out, an extra treat, don’t be harsh and don’t judge yourself; we all need time off to rest and recharge our physical and mental batteries from time to time. And be patient with yourself. We are all different and we all take different times to achieve results. Don’t compare yourself to others and understand what you body needs. Change your workout routine, change sport if you have to, but find something that works for you and go at your own pace, listening to when you need to rest or are ready to push yourself. Fitness is all about knowing yourself and finding the best way for you to reach your goals. It’s normal to lose motivation, there are so many reasons why you might not want to go to the gym; but when working out starts feeling like yet another chore, it might be time to re-evaluate your routine and find something that works for you. If you do that, you will find your love for fitness back. © st ock. adobe .com/t winst erphot o 42-43.qxp_Layout 1 22/02/2022 09:36 Page 244 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HAIR & BEAUTY Get your glow on This spring, mix up your beauty regime for a more natural look. Get your glow on 44-45.qxp_Layout 1 22/02/2022 09:38 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 45 HAIR & BEAUTY © st ock. adobe .com/f izk es Skincare and makeup Daily skincare is always a must for a good beauty base, but even more so this spring. The natural glow is back again, so put emphasis on your skincare routine to provide the best possible base for minimalist makeup. Now the winter cold is a thing of the past, swap out your heavy creams for a gel moisturiser that’s lighter on the skin while still hydrating through the day. Micellar water is a gift for everyday cleansing and removing makeup with ease, but as we come out of the colder months, employing an exfoliating scrub at least two or three times a week is a good idea for buffing away dry, flaky skin that might still be lingering. No need to stress over the no-makeup look, which ironically has a history of involving lots of makeup. To help you look your best and avoid caking on the layers, look for a mistake-proof tinted base, which can either pair well with a primer, or in some cases even cover your primer, foundation, concealer and highlighter in one. When adding a splash of colour, choose between the cheek, eye or lip for statement makeup. A generous sweep of blush over the apple of your cheek can only add to the rosy glow of your minimalist look. Eyes pop in neon shadows or framed with ultra-brights. It’s all about mermaid eyes in coral and tropical ocean colours, and remember stick-on gems? Well they’re back, on the runways and most likely in our makeup bags too. Why cover up under-eye circles when you can bedazzle them instead? Lip gloss is back for a dewy look to complement a fresh face. Don’t be afraid to go bold here either, as darker tones accent the shine. Pick one feature to highlight and turn the volume up. Hair The theme of the natural you at its best blurs into haircare trends for this year. So whatever your hair’s natural beauty, look for products that will emphasise it - curl cream, smoothers and hair oils for frizz ease, or volumising spray or foam to give a lift to poker straight hair. Top it off with natural shine to emulate the ‘oops you caught me in the shower’ look that’s all over the catwalk. Because let’s face it, that’s not practical when your tresses are dripping all over your shoulders (and the supermarket floor). For this, you can’t go wrong with a hair mask or carefully used leave-in conditioner. If you’re wavy then embrace it au naturelle, because soft and beachy is the ultimate zero-effort style. Less is more is the way to go to make the most of those welcome warmer days. But if you’re in the mood to switch things up, pastels, neons and even rainbow colours are set to try and outshine the sun this spring and summer. With the trend for bright eyes, it’s shaping up to be a year of neon. Speaking of bright colours, the 90s are calling for a comeback with braids, tiny tails and buns for up-does, or leaving it long and loose. If you dare, you might even brave the buzz. As a definite plus, your hair will feel soft as a peach, no products necessary. Just make sure you see a stylist you can trust to tell you if this extreme cut will suit your face and hairline. The bob is as reliable as ever, but the lob (that’s long bob) is in favour for still being low- maintenance while keeping some tease-able length. Nails Salon trips are back all-around, for nails as well as hair. We’re still feeling the love for pastels here, which look all the sweeter with a French tip. But to get you set for your manicure, it’s always worth making sure your natural nails are as healthy as possible. Now the gloves are off, and hands in general don’t need as much revival from biting cold weather, give your cuticles the TLC they’ve been missing. They’re the under-appreciated starting point for long and strong nails, and the latter is especially important. Regularly getting falsies, or even constant use of nail-polish, weakens the nails underneath over time. Use cuticle oil or cream before bed for optimal effect, and push back the cuticle occasionally and gently, as trimming can cause them to grow back tougher. If you find your nails are looking frayed, use your instincts in pampering them over painting or manicuring. If you love wearing a new colour every day, but your nails are brittle or splitting, consider giving them a month to breathe. With accented natural beauty being the theme for spring 2022, care for yourself however you can. Looking and feeling good will naturally follow. 44-45.qxp_Layout 1 22/02/2022 09:38 Page 2food Spring 46 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY FOOD & DINING Spring is here and it’s time to spice up our recipes – with any luck, it might even be warm enough to eat and drink outside. What to do: 1) Pre-heat oven to 180C/160C Fan (Gas mark 4) 2) Grease a loaf baking tin with butter (not the 200g saved butter) and line it with baking paper. 3) Mix butter and sugar in a blender and mix. Add the eggs one at a time, blending each before adding the next. Once mixed, add the flour and some grated lemon zest and blend all together until smooth. 4) Pour the mixture into the baking tin, flattening the top with a spoon or knife, and set in the oven © stock.adobe.com/vm2002 You’ll need: * 200g unsalted butter * 200g caster sugar * 200g self-raising flower * 3 Eggs * Lemon to zest and juice * 4tbsp icing sugar Lemon drizzle cake to bake for 50-55 minutes. 5) Stir together lemon juice and icing sugar and when the cake is finished and has cooled, drizzle the mixture over the top. Alternatively, you can also poke some holes into the top of the cake so that some of the icing mixture penetrates deeper for flavour. Optional: Slice some lemon and lay decoratively on top, or add your own preferred decorations to give it that personal touch 46-49.qxp_Layout 1 22/02/2022 09:39 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 47 Click’em Inn Swinhope, Nr Binbrook, Market Rasen, LN8 6BS Tel: 01472 398253 Web: www.clickem-inn.co.uk The Click’em Inn is a family-owned freehouse, established for over 30 years in its current incarnation. Pierce the leg all over with the tip of a sharp knife and insert the slices of garlic into the holes. Season well and roast for 30 minutes per 450g – this joint should take just over an hour. Combine the redcurrant jelly, mint and mustard. Fifteen minutes before the lamb has finished roasting, baste it carefully with the redcurrant marinade. Return it to the oven for the remainder of the cooking time, then allow it to stand for 15 minutes before carving. Meanwhile, cook the new potatoes until tender and steam the peas. Thinly slice the lamb and serve with the vegetables. Roast lamb with redcurrant glaze FOOD & DINING 46-49.qxp_Layout 1 22/02/2022 09:39 Page 2What to do: * Set and pre-heat oven to 200C (Gas Mark 6) then line a tray with baking paper. Cut strips of baking paper (about two inches wide) to later wrap around the pies to help them maintain their shape. * Mix mutton with mace, nutmeg and gravy into a bowl and season generously with salt and pepper. Help the gravy work into the meat by working it with clean hands, and then divide into four roughly even balls and set aside. * Prepare the pastry by heating 160ml of water, ? tsp of salt into a saucepan until it is nearly boiling. At the same time put flour into a mixing bowl. Pour the hot (but not boiling) liquid into the bowl of flour and mix together with a spoon. You can then knead by hand once it has cooled enough not to burn. Work it into a smooth dough. * Cut off roughly a quarter of the pastry and set aside – this will be used later. Dive the remaining dough into four balls to go with the filling and roll each ball flat with a rolling pin until you have a circle of flat pastry about 7 inch in diameter. * Place a ball of meat on each circle and gather up the pastry around it into the shape of a pork pie. Then take the pastry set aside earlier and cut “lids” for the pies to the size required. You can use water to dampen the sides and pinch (or crimp) the pastry together between your fingers to seal the lid to the sides. * Wrap the greased baking paper around the edges of your pies and tie them with cooking string to ensure they keep their shape, then cut a small steam hole into the top of each pie to ensure the heat penetrates to the meat. Set on the baking tray. Brush your pies with a beaten egg yolk. It is a good idea to set the pies in the fridge for 30 minutes to cool and harden (for holding their shape) before transferring them to the oven to bake for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown. 48 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY FOOD & DINING © stock.adobe.com/JoannaTkaczuk You’ll need: * 600g (1lb) of mutton mince * 1/2 tsp ground mace * 1/2 tsp nutmeg * 5 tbsp gravy * Salt and pepper to season * 120g lard * 360g flour * 1 egg Scotch Pie Horncastle Cake Art & Hobby House Everything for the Crafter Cake Decorations, Knitting, Crochet, Felt, Ribbons & more www.horncastlecakeart.co.uk 25 North Street, Horncastle, Lincs.
