< Previous90 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCOUNTY MOTORINGThe vintage craze is hitting the wholecounty in fashion, food andentertainment, as you’ll see elsewhere inthis issue, and motorsport is another areawhere vintage-inspired style remainspopular. With a healthy bikingcommunity across the county anywayand countless clubs meeting on a regularbasis, what trends have emerged? Wetalked to Richard Machin of Jack Machinof Lincoln and he revealed, “With therecession and the time’s we’re living in,we’ve seen a marked demand forscooters interestingly. With the stylesfrom the sixties and seventies beingpopular thanks to interest in films likeQuadrophenia, we’ve had a lot of peoplecome in and buy them.”One reason for this seems to beeconomy. For one, a scooter is incrediblycheap to insure and Richard says this isone thing that constantly surprisespeople. Often people who do a dailycommute of around ten miles each waywill see their bikes pay for themselveswithin a year to eighteen months as thefuel economy is so good. As well as thefinancial benefits, it seems that buying aVespa or Piaggio, particularly in Lincoln, means buying into an exclusive club withdozens of scooter riders meeting up atThe Pride of Lincoln every Tuesday nightand other nights being held at the Horseand Groom and elsewhere too. Cafescatering for mod culture also exist, meaning it becomes a focal point forthose who love their two-stroke or classicbikes. For the more speed or sport-orienteered riders, nights at The Dovcotein Swinderby, Barton Bike Night or eventhe buzz and noise of Willingham Woodsin Market Rasen during the summer areall available for those who want to meetwith like-minded petrolheads on aregular basis. Riders might not even getmuch actual riding done at these events, such is the camaraderie and sense offriendship that getting into a set of bikingleathers brings. Richard says that eventhough they used to handle Honda bikes, customers have returned since they haveFun ontwo wheelsOur county is known for its motorsport heritage. Yet the dark does have a habit of creeping up,so it’s important not only to set out in good time to get backwhen it’s light, but to make sure you can be seen in that halfwayhouse before it is truly dark if you get held up.Brenda Gilligan, Senior Solicitor at Wilkin Chapman andauthor of ‘Practical Horse Law – A guide for owners and riders’explains more...Hi-visibility clothing is not the most fashionable gear around, but it could help save your life and that of your horse. There arenumerous items on sale, but you don’t need all of them. Atabard is a must and a quarter sheet for your horse forms thebasics. There are tail guards, hat covers, fetlock bandages, reinslips and even stirrup lights – white for front, red for back. Whenyou’re wearing hi-vis gear, you will be seen on average threeseconds quicker than without, and this could represent asignificant difference in braking time. You should certainly wearhi-vis gear when you’re riding or leading a horse. One of the most talked about products on the market is the“Polite” range of hi vis wear, which has caused a great deal ofdiscussion in the equine world. It’s intended to have a similarBe smart,BE SEENMake sure you and your horse are seenwhen you’re out and about in the county092-093:Layout 1 18/3/13 09:34 Page 1EQUINEeffect to the cones people put outside theirhouses to discourage parking –they resembleofficial police notices which say “No Parking”,though the actual wording on the cones is“Polite Notice” and nothing to do with thepolice! This range is designed with thechequerboard effect of police tabards andheadgear and at first glance might be takenfor police wear, thus slowing drivers down. Why police would be riding down a countrylane on a 14hh coloured cob is open todebate, mind!A warning has been issued by the policethat wearing these items could constituteimpersonating a police officer, which is acriminal offence. Although a prosecution isprobably unlikely, it’s something to bear inmind when considering whether to purchasethese items.Riders also worry about wearing tabardsemblazoned with “Caution – Young Horse” orsimilar. Could this be an admission ofnegligence in that you can’t control yourhorse? I think it’s unlikely that any court casewould turn on this. A court would take intoaccount all the circumstances if there was anaccident and not just the wording on a tabard. Was it a quiet road, were you accompanied bya safe traffic proof horse, and had you donework at home to acclimatise your youngster tohacking out? Horses have to go out for a firsttime and to be trained in road sense. It’s also important that you can be found ifyou part company with your horse. Hi-vis gearwill help ensure you are spotted in opencountry, especially if a search helicopter is sentout.Make sure you also have a charged phonewith you – and that it isn’t kept on the horse. You should also make use the ICE scheme – inwhich there is a number listed under ICE onyour phone to be used “In Case ofEmergency”.Making use of noticeable clothing andtaking a few precautions before you set outcould make all the difference. With the cost of living rising, animalcharities are generally more strained and are often full tocapacity. So, if you’ve got the room or know someone who has, then adopting an animal could be more beneficial than youthink. The animal will be much happier, the shelters will havemore room and because animals give so much love, you’ll nodoubt be happier too. With dozens of animal shelters all over the county, there’s awealth of choice if you want to adopt. Where pedigree dogscommand high prices among breeders, the real pooches in needare the ones that are mongrels or cross-breeds and are usuallyavailable for an adoption fee or even for free. Mongrels areusually well-tempered and often suffer less adverse healtheffects. Dogs bred for their looks or mannerisms mayhave health complications, be it through osteoporosis, arthritis or respiratory problems. We recently paid Jerry Green Dog Rescue a visit.Located in Broughton near Brigg they have severalcentres through the county and have a full housemost of the time. That’s not to say there’s not a shelternear you that needs help, but we wanted to shine a light onsome dogs in need of homes. Jerry Green rehome dogs in a different way. So, rather thanwalking in and picking a dog from a row of kennels, youarrange a ‘meeting’ with the dog you think you might like fromthe charity’s website. Two or three meetings in a private roomwith the dog of your choice means you can get to know eachother and in some cases, gain their trust. This means you aredoubly sure that the dog you take home is the dog for you. Some have sad histories or nervous dispositions, so to findout what they are like day to day before getting them home isuseful. Volunteers at the centre in Broughton say this is perhapsthe best way to rehome dogs and they’ve had a vast reductionin the amount of dogs returned by unhappy adopters. Here we have three dogs in need of a home:JackoJacko is a small, 8-year-old terrier crossbreed with a nervousnature. He’s incredibly loving, but will need to get to knowyou and trust you before he will let you close. He will needsomeone who has had terriers before and knows how tohandle him. He’ll need a quiet household with a patient owner. This little chap loves a treat and loves a good run.MissieMissie is a ten-year-old crossbreed and is full of energy! Here, Sarah Lamballe, who is part of theMarket Rasen Business Improvement Groupthat successfully bid for the town’s Portas Pilotstatus, as well as organising the monthly markets, tells us whyLincolnshire means so much to her. What do you love about Lincolnshire? The big skies, wide open spaces, quiet beaches, unspoilt countryside, traditionalvalues held by real communities and, above all, the unique beauty of the Wolds. What advice would you give to those who’ve never visited the county? Please come for a day, stay the weekend and return for a holiday! We have somuch to offer from fresh local food to great walking, cycling, horse riding, familydays out, farmers’ markets and beautiful places to stay. You’ll be pleasantlysurprised by the lack of traffic and variety of things to do – Including cultural andstylish city breaks too. What’s the highlight of the year for you in the county?I must say the award winning Big Markets in Market Rasen on the first weekendof every month! With wonderful artisan produce and entertainment, they just getbetter. I’m also really looking forward to Brocklesby Country Fair on 23rd June. Mypartner Jim Kendall grew up on a Yarborough Estate Farm, so we always go as afamily and even take Kiwi, our terrier. It’s a real country show, with a traditionalfeel. Where is the best night out in the county? To be honest, these days I’m more of a day out person, so lunch at MarketRasen races with friends is my idea of fun. My favourite meeting is The Prelude inSeptember. It’s always an impressive racecard.LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.net098:Layout 1 18/3/13 08:51 Page 1The Parishes Shopping Centre is the place to be this Spring, for all the latest fashions, household items and bargains galore.
