At the start not oneof the pupils would stand up and speak to anybody, but by the end of it theywere speaking in front of seventy dignitaries, offering their thoughts about thewhole project. I’m really excited about this course becausethe enthusiasm among the pupils is fantastic.”Among the kids taking part this year is Andrew Harris, aYear 9 pupil, who was hugely impressed by what he saw atCranwell. He says, “I really enjoyed watching the RedArrows fly over us because I really want to join them whenI’m older – it was a really good experience. To get to sit onone of the planes and meet all the pilots was brilliant.”It’s clear that Jon Egging’s memory lives on in theenthusiasm and support of the Red Arrows and theexcitement of the kids who get a unique look at aLincolnshire institution. The aim of the Trust is to empoweryoung people to be the best they can be and the BlueSkies project is delivering that aim in spades.80 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYRED ARROWSPHOTO COURTESY OF DALE WOOLGAR078-080:Layout 1 18/3/13 09:43 Page 3A FAMILYAFFAIRPHOTOS BY ANGELA COOPERThis is just a selection of photographs from this event…Visit www.lincolnshiretoday.netto view and purchasecopies of the photographsLincolnshireTodayThe recent ball at The White Heather in Caenby Corner really was a family affair.Sisters Reanne Haynes and Stacey Todd organised the event to raise money forCancer Research UK, specifically its work fighting breast cancer, as Stacey has beenfighting the disease.Nearly two hundred guests attended theevent, enjoying dancing, a raffle and anauction with kind donations from many localcompanies. It is only now, while the crops areonly a few inches high that we are able tocapture the bouts on camera. The skirmishes we see are usually downto the fact that the females, or Does, inseason every six weeks, are only receptiveto mating for a few short hours duringone day. The bucks aren’t territoriallyaggressive but they will chase off rivals, although these are only little skirmishescompared to the buck vs doe fights, where the fur really flies! A dominant buck will sit close to thedoe but she won’t let him come too closeand he won’t let her run away, it’s a kindof ‘Mexican sit-off’.Every now and again he willoptimistically sidle up to her to ‘checkprogress’ and this is when she explodesinto action. Lumps of white fur float offinto the air and you might wonder whyhe doesn’t flee this furious punishment. But, he is not the dominant male fornothing. Her attack, literally red in toothand claw are simply endured, after all itdoesn’t do to look weak.Once they do mate - althoughgoodness knows why he’d want to afterbeing boxed senseless - the doe has agestation period of forty three days andwill then give birth to two to four young, known as leverets. Unlike rabbits, leverets are born withtheir eyes open, a good fur coat andable to walk and live above ground asopposed to burrows. The doe scattersher young around the field where theyscrape a ‘form’ (a depression in theground). There they wait for milkingtime. They are quite vulnerable duringthis period of course - we have witnesseda doe attacking a crow as it searches forher young. It was walking across thefield towards one of the leverets and 4kgof angry hare came hurtling towards it.The crow was well and truly bowled overand certainly wasn’t about to return. Foxes too will take leverets but thethreats to hares are not only from localwildlife, man plays his part too.Thankfully, hare coursing has been madeillegal under the Hunting (With Dogs) Act2004 but hares can still be shot, which isvery saddening. Poaching still goes on too, especially inLincolnshire, and to deter this activity youmight’ve seen those tree trunks ortelegraph poles that farmers have laid ingateways. This is to discourage poachersfrom driving all over farmland andbringing their own unique damage andviolence. The only other thing farmers cando is to shoot the hares – not becausethey destroy crops, but to protect theirland and crops from poachers. Hares declined due to powerful farmingmachinery too and chemical sprays -sadly, they ingest the poison by licking thespray off their fur as though it were rain. But, there are various initiatives toencourage farmers and landowners torestore, recreate and reconnect wildlifehabitats. Recreating wildlife corridors willallow wildlife of various shapes and sizesto move safely from one area of habitat toanother. So maybe there’s hope yet forthis intriguing character.A belatedAPPEARANCEPutting in a somewhat belated appearance this year is Lincolnshire’s most comical andthuggish mammals, the mad March hare.082-083:Layout 1 18/3/13 09:28 Page 284 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCOUNTY MOTORINGThey don’tmake them likethey used to….It’s strange, isn’t it, that in this modern age where so many ofus clamour for the latest technological wizardry, we so readilyindulge in the secure warmth of reliving days gone byFor some, there’s nothing quite like being bentdouble under the bonnet of a 1968 Triumph Spitfire orgetting around to finally replacing those valve seatingsor flat on one’s back under a beloved Ford Poplar, upto our armpits in grease, wrestling with a big end.So, what is the attraction of classic cars? For manyit’s the simple fact that they remind us of our youth -especially those first few years on the road. Apparentlymost classic car owners buy cars from that sort ofperiod in their life - a time when, perhaps, they didn’tquite have the appreciation or the finances they havenow. For many the chance of being part of a club is veryrewarding too – a chance to make new friends from allacross the country and share thoughts and ideas with adifferent circle of people. For others, it’s the sheer pride of being ableto restore a vehicle and enjoy the journey of giving an ‘old girl’ a newlife. If you don’t believe that classic cars and bikes is as popular as it oncewas just take a look at one of the many shows that take place aroundLincolnshire. Shows are an important opportunity to notonly exhibit cars to an appreciative audience, but also achance to meet old friends, and see examples ofa car you simply wouldn’t have the chanceto otherwise. Attendance at these showscertainly seems to be growing strongly eachyear, so perhaps nostalgia is becoming evermore popular. Don’t take our word for itjust pop down to one of the showsopposite and see for yourself.084-089:Layout 1 18/3/13 10:46 Page 1Classic motoring diaryHistoric Sports Car Club Where: Cadwell Park • When: 20th and 21st AprilA variety of different Historic Sports Car racing at Cadwell Park – over nine racesin total each lasting some 20 minutes or so. www.hscc.org.uk or www.cadwellpark.org.uk Anniversary of the Dambuster Mission Lincs Where: Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre, Tattershall • When: 18th and 19th May 70TH Anniversary of the Dambuster Mission RAF & AAF male/female required &Vehicles. 617 air & Ground crew will attend past & present. www.mvt.org.ukVintage Sports Car Club Where: Cadwell Park • When: 8th June Cadwell’s biggest car event of the season. In 1982, they foundedRimmer Bros, which operatedfrom modest buildings at thefamily home in Lincolnshire. They bought, sold, restored, serviced and provided parts for Triumph cars, doing all the work themselves. The business grew and many years later, the brothers still own the companythey founded, where they now have an expert staff of sixty people to keep thewheels turning. The company HQ at Bracebridge Heath, near Lincoln, now includes 75,000sq ft of storage space, tens of thousands of stock lines, millions of parts - andnow covers the Triumph, MG, Rover, Mini, Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguarranges. We’re certainly lucky to have this on our doorstep in the county andshould be a point of contact for anyone into their restoration! The Rimmer brotherstrading in 1984 at aStag owners clubnational day.Soper’s passion for motorsportSteve Soper has always beenfanatical about cars. He raced in sportscars and touring cars at the top levelfor over 20 years, eleven of which werespent behind the wheel of a BMW. In1983 he almost won the BritishTouring Car Championship. Hefinished as runner-up in the series in1988, and in 1997 he came second inthe FIA GT Championship. He has alsocompeted in the European, Japanese and German Touring CarChampionships. He won the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 1987, the 24 Hoursof Spa in 1995, and the Guia Race in 1997.In 1999 Steve became the driving force behind Soper of Lincoln whenhe purchased the business that was then located in Dixon Street. It quicklybecame apparent to him that those premises were not suitable torepresent the brand that he was so passionate about.
