It worked too. Most journalistsseemed taken aback when encouraged tomanoeuvre up a near-vertical ramp intothe 747. No need for any worries, though, it was child’s play for the four-wheel-drive luxury speed-monster to scalethe equivalent of a three-story building.Aesthetically, the Sport Utility Vehiclehas a more self-assured exterior and lavishinterior than the outgoing Range RoverSport. It is also more flexible as it nowcomes with the option of carrying sevenpeople. The comfy cabin mixes style andsumptuousness with elegant lines, topquality materials and spoonfuls of sportingcharacter. The athletic air of the car’scocoon is also reflected in the smaller, thicker steering wheel, higher centreconsole, configurable mood lighting andgenerous seat bolsters. The Range Rover Sport’s high drivingposition instils a sense of self-assuranceand the steering feels light anddirect. Maximum ground clearancehas been increased and the improvedair suspension system automaticallyvaries between two ride heights, whileLand Rover’s Terrain Response 2 gadgetryintuitively chooses the most appropriateprogramme for whatever the wheels aredriving over. The SUV available on our media driveday was the first Land Rover vehicle towear the new high-performance SVRbadge from the company’s ‘Special VehicleOperations’ division. As a matter of fact, the Range Rover Sport SVR is the mostdynamically focused vehicle Land Roverhas ever produced. The goliath is bonkers-quick, because it ispowered by an uprated version of LandRover’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, which has been tuned to deliver 550 PS – a40 PS increase over the existing V8Supercharged derivative. Developing 680Nm, it surges from a standstill to 62 mph injust 4.7 seconds and it will go on to achievea top speed of 162 mph. It sounds awe-inspiring – with the throbbingsupercharged V8 engine releasing adelightful roar when you give it some welly. Furthermore, such is the Range RoverSport SVR’s sporting prowess it has lappedthe famous Nordschleife circuit at theNürburgring in Germany in 8 minutes 14seconds. This makes it the fastestproduction SUV around the Nürburgring. The impressive feat was carried out by aLand Rover driver testing a standardproduction example of the potent newperformance flagship. On the downside it officially getsthrough a gallon of unleaded every 22.1miles. On test, travelling through a varietyof settings, from fields to B-roads andduel carriageways, we never got morethan 20 mpg out of it, but that is closeenough to the on-paper figure. Mindyou, it does cost £93,450, so if you canafford to buy it, what it does to the gallonis probably not particularly important. The rampant Range Rover Sport SVR ispaired with a velvety-smooth eight-speedautomatic gearbox. It made driving, on oroff the tarmac, so easy and, apart fromanything else, it left us free from fatigue. The garden-fresh SVR is bound to buildupon the outstanding success of thestandard ‘Sport’, which quicklybecame one of Land Rover’s mostadmired models following itsintroduction in 2005. We caughtup with Robin Campbell to find out how they’ve stayed so successful78-79_Layout 1 20/03/2015 10:13 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY79A CAPPUCCINO WITH…Remarkably, it’s 35 years since UB40first arrived in the charts and theycontinue to pull in big crowds to theirlive shows. Their Getting Over The StormTour has seen the UK’s most successfulreggae band play over forty shows toover 100,000 fans – and they’ll be atLincoln’s Engine Shed on Sunday 24thMay. It’s a rare chance to see the band, more usually found in arenas, in a moreintimate show.Founding members Robin Campbell,Earl Falconer, Norman Hassan, JimmyBrown and Brian Travers are still in theband, while vocals are now taken on byAli and Robin Campbell’s brother Duncan, who joined in 2008. We spoke to Robinabout how the band continues to enjoysuccess more than three decades on.Robin tells us, “We started the tour lastyear and it’s been brilliant. We’ve playeda lot of towns we haven’t been to sincethe eighties and the gigs have been greatfun. You can see the whites of everyone’seyes and it makes for a really fun night.“As a live band, we’ve always beenable to generate a good atmospherewhether it’s a club or a football stadium, but it’s harder to project when yousometimes can’t even see the people atthe back. We played a festival in Hollandin front of 300,000 people and it wenton for field after field, and you couldn’tsee the end of the audience! So you endup only playing to the first few rowsanyway and the rest is just projecting, whereas in an intimate venue you’ve gota ready made atmosphere. It’s remindingus why we enjoyed being in a band inthe first place.”As well as the band’s loyal fans, UB40continue to welcome new fans to theirgigs. Robin says, “I don’t know wherethey’re coming from or how we’regetting them! But we have so manyyoung kids in the audience and I’malways flabbergasted that they seem toknow all the songs. You see them singingalong and I’m thinking ‘you weren’t evenborn when we recorded this’!”As well as the classic songs, UB40 willalso perform some of their newermaterial that’s proven popular with fansand critics alike. Robin says, “I thoughtour last album was going to get slated, because it was predominantly covers ofcountry songs, but in fact it got the bestreviews we’ve had for about ten years. Itwas a really pleasant surprise that it wasso well-received.”The big change in recent years hasbeen the arrival of Robin’s brotherDuncan on vocals alongside Robin, leaving the band in the curious positionof welcoming a new band member whowas a familiar face. Robin says, “Duncanhad always been a fan of the band, andin his words, he thought he knew all thesongs until he started singing them withme, when he realised they weren’t thewords he’d been singing for the lasttwenty years! When we started, Duncanwas in our social circle and he could haveeasily been in the band then, but decidedhe didn’t want to – a decision I think heregretted. “So when he was given theopportunity, he jumped at it – and I can’timagine anyone would have fitted inbetter with our sound. The Bee Gees hada sound, and we have a sound, and thatbrother blend is something you can’treplicate, it’s in the family. When Ali left, the idea of putting Duncan in his placewas a masterstroke, and it allowed me tocarry on singing with someone that Icould blend with. He’s not the same asAli, he’s obviously got his own sound, butit allows that vocal blend to remain. When he does the early songs, he doessound uncannily like Ali, to the pointpeople have accused us of usingrecordings on stage!”The arrival of Duncan has also meant afresh take on the band’s most famoussongs. Robin says, “We don’t rehearsethe famous songs much, because we’veplayed them so many times, it’s almostinstinctive now. We never rehearse RedRed Wine, but I have to say, I absolutelylove playing Red Red Wine to theaudience, because of their reaction. Thevast majority of the audience have paidtheir money to hear Red Red Wine and ifyou didn’t do it you’d be lynched! I can’timagine doing a concert and not playingRed Red Wine, and the audience knowevery line. Everyone has memories theyattach to a certain song and that’s whatkeeps people coming back.”You can see Robinand UB40 atLincoln’s EngineShed on Sunday 24thMay and tickets areavailable atwww.ub40.co.uk.78-79_Layout 1 20/03/2015 10:13 Page 2Next >
