Thismonth we speak with JohnOsborne, the Scunthorpe-bornwriter, poet and broadcasterwhose book Don’t Need TheSunshine reflected on the UK’s topseaside resorts. What are your favouriteplaces in Lincolnshire? What was most interesting while I was writing the book was not so much visitingplaces I’d never been to before but going back to places like Cleethorpes and seeingthem with adult eyes. Writing the book means I really got the sense of the history ofthe place and I felt a bit guilty pre-judging it. I always thought Cleethorpes was a bitcrap but when you get to know the history of the place, it’s really special.I think one of the nicest things is that you really see the care that has gone intoCleethorpes. In a lot of the towns I went to, you felt like it had been abandoned. Butin Cleethorpes there are lots of new developments, and there’s clearly been lots of loveand affection been put into it.What would you say sums up Lincolnshire people?Well, in every seaside town there are people trying to preserve the past – peopletrying to conserve lidos and theatres, and in Cleethorpes’ case the Winter Gardens.Sometimes they’re successful and sometimes they’re not but they fight for it. Even if ittoo late to save it, like the Winter Gardens, there’s still campaigns to recognise themand just have a blue plaque there.LoveLincolnshire82 LINCOLNSHIRETODAY82_Layout 1 20/03/2015 10:06 Page 15 Bishops Road, Lincoln, LN2 4JZ - Tel 01522 521112www.lunaceramics.co.uk25 Bathrooms in complete room settings.Friendly knowledgeable staff & free CAD design.L u n aChoose from SEVEN price ranges withtraditional and modern designs for every home.Full planning and design using the latest 3D computer software.GERMAN ENGINEERED KITCHENS.BathroomsKitchens German madeAffordableLuxuryinawiderangeofpricesVilleroy & Boch bathrooms83_Layout 1 20/03/2015 10:05 Page 1Tennyson Wharf is a newluxurious, purpose-builtcare home set in a uniquelocation overlooking theBurton Waters marina. This brand new care homeoffers high-quality nursingand residential care, alongsidespecialist dementia care. We’re proud of our carefullyselected and highly trained careteam, that takes the time to getto know each person we care for.
