< Previous20 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOMEMAKER - HOMESmoney at the outset and getting it right. If the room in question is modest in sizeit might be worth looking at ‘wallmounted’ units as this opens up the floorspace beneath, creating a feeling ofspace. If your bathroom is more spaciousthen why not incorporate a raised levelfor a rolled top bath or shower? Thechoices really are endless and we’ve seenthem all on our visits to reader’s homes. Bedrooms are an area that sometimesget forgotten, but that seems a shamegiven how long we spend there –admittedly a lot of that time is spentasleep but how great is it to awaken to abeautifully designed bedroom? Evenbetter to retire to after all the stresses andstrains of a hard days work. Large windows to let in lots of naturallight in the morning and comfy beds soyou awaken bright and alert after a goodnights sleep are just a couple of keypoints here. Painted or stainedfloorboards offer rustic charm, or a darkcarpet with pastel sheets and beddingseems to be on trend currently. However, if you’re one of those peoplethat likes to shake things up a little whynot opt for a neutral base and use bigimpact accents to change your décor?Throws, bed cushions and duvet coversmake it as easy as ABC to freshen up yourbedroom whenever you want.PHOTO: VIDAL BED BY BEAUTIFUL MODERN THING14-21_Layout 1 18/03/2016 12:15 Page 7LINCOLNSHIRETODAY21Oil Fired Boiler EngineerOFTEC RegisteredSteve Russell PlumbingInstallation, Commissioning, Repairs,24 Hour Call Out, Servicing & General PlumbingCall Steve on 07840 531403We cover all your photography needs. We offer an affordable, professional friendly service. We will try to match or beat any quote!Tel: 07460647157Email: happysnapzphotos@hotmail.comFacebook@ HappySnapzPhotographyWant to add warmth andcharacter to your home? Then you're in the right place because NeilWade Chimney & Stoves are specialists inwood and multifuel stove installation and repairacross the Spalding, Boston, Holbeach andBourne areas.Tel: 01775 766 408 www.neilwadechimneys.co.uk • email: neilwade78@btinternet.comINSTALLATION:A friendlyand professional servicefrom our experienced team.DESIGN:Free home visitand design service.DISABLED:Specialists inwet room designs.OPENING TIMES:Tuesday - Friday 9am - 4pmPrivate appointmentsavailable Tuesday to Friday5pm - 8pm Saturday 10am - 3pmBeautiful bathrooms without theexpensive flannelBathroom Desires55 Queen Street, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, LN8 3ENTel: 01673 843351www.bathroomdesires.co.ukBringing back personal one to one servicesN&JR/O 30 St Peters Avenue, Cleethorpes,North East Lincolnshire, DN35 8HL, UKTel: 01472 291100 (workshop/office/fax)Email: sales@njupholstery.co.ukCommercial Projects lDomestic Projects lupholsteryhistorybespokere-upholsterycommercialNeil and Jarrod set up the company in 1999 on the NorthLincolnshire coast, and have over 30 years in theupholstery industry. Be it inthe way the rooms are designed, thefurniture that is used – or simply theaccessories. Everything tells a story. Whenit comes to accessorising however, whysettle for mass produced paintings ordécor? Lincolnshire is a county rife withcreativity, and though it’s not alwaysapparent, there are actually quite a fewaspiring artists in the county – creatingtruly incredible, and importantly, uniquepieces of art. From paintings to sculptures, both inthe home and outside, buyingsomething created by a local artist issure to be both exciting and original. Many canvass pictures now sold indepot stores or outlets are digital imagestaken from the internet, often copiedonto thousands of prints and sold acrossthe country. When it comes to theexpense one has already placed on thehome, it then seems remiss to give prideof place to something people mighthave seen elsewhere. Especially whenone considers that a handmade piecefrom an artist could actually be aninvestment. And one hardly needs to be a lotterywinner to afford their prices, either. Justpop in to a gallery, have a look at what ison display. And in many cases if there issomething that catches your eye, butdoesn’t quite seal the deal, then the gallerywill be able to advise you on any similarpieces or work in progress the artist mighthave. We’ve arranged a few of our favouritepieces here, all from artists local to ourcounty. TrulyuniqueAn artistic edge can help to add colour and life to any room. So,when it comes to adding that finishing touch, why not considerthe work of local artists?1222-23_Layout 1 18/03/2016 11:45 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY23HOMEMAKER - ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRETHE LITTLE REDGALLERYLove art? Featuring bright colours and incrediblecontrasts, her pieces are vibrant and exciting, while stillretaining a natural feel. 2) Lawrence Coulson – Based in Stamford, Lawrencehas a passion for landscapes, and this is reflected inhis art. Compared to Turner and Constable by the artcritic David lee, Lawrence’s work has even featured theLincoln Cathedral. 3) Carl Paul – You might recall some of Carl’s workfrom our previous issue, but it’s worth showing againsimply for the range of complex colours that breathesnew life into sights we’ve all see in Lincolnshire. There’ssomething about Carl’s work that takes reality as weknow it, and introduces a touch of fantasy. You couldalmost imagine these scenes of Lincoln as comingfrom the Lord of the Rings. 4) John Pickering – A sense of the whimsical, mixedwith a bit of humour, John’s art is bright and vibrant –with a touch of the art-deco. John Pickering has eventaught and lectured in Lincoln, and currently lives withhis wife and fellow artist in Canwick. 4322-23_Layout 1 18/03/2016 11:45 Page 224 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOMEMAKER - GARDENSOne of the great things about working for the region’s premier County magazine is thevariety of gardens we get to visit. They provide oodles of ideas to take back and try at homeand we know from the many letters received, that we’re not alone. The garden should draw you in and to keep itinteresting all year round so you’ll need far more than goodplanting. From simple paths to intricate structures, there’s a featureto fit any style or budget and whether your garden is asprawling affair or a small town garden it’ll undoubtedly have26 ÁA simple gravel path leading to awooden bridge adds interest to thisgarden. Shrubs and herbaceousperennials soften the edges.A Garden patio adjacent to the kitchenmakes life easier when eating alfresco asyou have easy access to the refrigeratorand the dishwasher afterwards. When it comes to lighting your garden alittle goes a long way, as you need lesslight outdoors than in.Add a highlight toyour garden with anarchitectural centrepiece24-29_Layout 1 18/03/2016 12:22 Page 2a t least one path, which with the right materials, can be made to enhance the overall design. In our travels, we’ve seen everything frombrick, concrete pavers and gravel through to barkchippings, slate and a variety of other materials.Your choice should take into account otherfeatures in the garden, and the style you wish tocreate - be it formal, casual or country cottage. If you are faced with slopes or uneven ground –or just want to break up an expanse of flat lawn, why not incorporate a rockery, or raised bedsfrom sleepers? A rockery, can be designed onslopes or level ground. Again, use rocks that looknatural in your surroundings so the finishedfeature doesn’t look like its landed like a space ship from a farflung corner of the world. Water adds interest to a garden too and this doesn’t have tobe a 10 metre deep oasis with expensive Koi , although theydo look marvellous! Still water, even in a modest sized pond orthe sound of water bubbling from a fountain are easy tomake, thanks to the various ready-made plastic ponds you canbuy or pond liners, kits and pumps which, even with thenecessary digging, make this a worthwhile endeavour. If spaceis limited, or you just don’t fancy the back breaking workinvolved in excavating, you could even go for a container ortubs lined with pond liner.Up to £100 off all core range lawnmowersbefore 31 July 2016 when you trade inyour old equipment for a new Honda. For more information please visit honda.co.uk/lawn-and-gardenScunthorpe Lawnmowers Ltd187 Cottage Beck Road, Scunthorpe DN16 1TRTel: 01724 866581 www.scunthorpelawnmowers.co.ukWELCOMETO THEGREENER SIDETRADE INtoTRADE UPOffers availableacross the range26 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOMEMAKER - GARDENS28 ÁDespite the unpredictable climate,us Brits love to entertain outside soan outdoor room such as agazebo is a great choice.Raised beds offer an opportunity tochoose a soil type rather thanputting up with what you inheritedelsewhere.24-29_Layout 1 18/03/2016 12:22 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY27HOMEMAKER - GARDENSWood and timber panelling canhelp to add feature points to agarden, while multiple levels adddepth.PHOTO: EARNSHAWS FENCING CENTRES24-29_Layout 1 18/03/2016 12:22 Page 4Tel: 01529 306 889 • Mob: 07825 577 317Email: marktreesurgeonwhitehead@gmail.comwww.markwhiteheadtreeservicesltd.co.ukAs Tree Surgeons we prideourselves on our expertise andability, with over 10 years ofexperience in the arboriculturebusiness, we are able to perform allaspects of tree work to the domesticand commercial market. Bridges are another feature for the garden and are anattractive addition with or without water. They are relativelyeasy to construct, or you can purchase readymade ones. Theyreally do beckon the visitor into the garden, just asking to becrossed, and are hard to resist. Then we have our garden structures: arches and pergolasoffer height to a garden and allow you the opportunity togrow climbers that you might otherwise not be able to growelsewhere. They can also provide much needed screening, shade and support. They offer a place to relax and unwindaway from prying eyes and a place to duck for cover if theheavens suddenly open. And, remember to create spaces to sit and enjoy the gardenfrom different aspects. There’s all sorts of garden furnitureavailable these days and your choice is only as limited as yourimagination. The trick here is to make the garden anextension of your home by creating a living space outdoors -on the odd occasions the sun does shine. Finally, don’t overlook things like garden sculptures, ornaments or statuary, in the garden. Adding ornamentalfeatures to the garden allows you to stamp your personalityon the garden and will give you something to enjoy in thewinter months when plants are a bit slow growing. Once you’ve got these sorted of course there’s nothing tostop you softening the edges with plants and flowers. This canbe a combination of ground planting, tubs, raise beds, andhanging baskets to name but a few. Just remember to havefun with it and create a space that suits your lifestyle.Who can resist the allure of a waterfeature. It adds year round interest andattracts a variety of wildlife.24-29_Layout 1 18/03/2016 12:22 Page 5Makingyourideas growPennells is one of the oldestindependent garden companies in thecountry and is in its 236th year oftrading.Pennells Garden Centre was founded by a Richard Pennell in1780.
