We’re currently responsible for over 900 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules across two sites and in foster homes around the country and money raised through second hand sales go towards keeping them happy and healthy.” The charity accepts a range of goods from horse tack, rugs, accessories and country wear to jewellery (gold, silver or costume), children’s toys, books, puzzles and games, homeware such as accessories, dishes and trinkets. What happens when you recall your dog? Do they always return? As a trainer when I ask this question, I get ‘My dog’s recall is brilliant, if there aren’t any distractions!’ However, the problem with this statement is that there are always distractions… That could be a smell, another dog, person or even a leaf!! First, we need to look at what happens on a standard walk? How often do you recall your dog and do they return after the first time you use the recall cue? Does the cue work every time? What does your dog do when they hear the cue? All of these answers will help you look and figure out what needs to be changed. We need to understand what motivates your dog to return and that something is YOU! For this to happen we need to be more motivating and reinforcing than the environment and everything else in it! We do this by teaching our dogs that its really fun to be around you, which will then create a really reliable recall. However, playing chase will always teach your dog to be arms length. By teaching our dog a number of different games like ‘Wow, what’s this?’, ‘Ready, Steady, Go’ and the Counting Game helps create anticipation to make us more exciting which then results in a better recall. For more games or help with creating a really reliable recall then please visit www.ladypeasdogs.co.uk where we have a number of recall courses as well as a new in person workshop on the 23rd April.
